Shimano Symetre 2500RI???

Post by Coyote »

Anyone used this reel before? I just bought one, to use with my dropshot rod. The place I ordered it from online suggested it for dropshotting, sooooo I took a "shot" and bought it. Well, on the first day out using it I was stumped, thought I broke it even. The spool does not go up and down (which wraps the line evenly on the spool) causing the line to wrap all at the top of the spool and when it does, some of the line drop down and is "loose". Well I haven't fished it since thinking it would cause more problems (birdsnest) than it would catch bass. Anyone else out there know why they did this for these reels. I think I read somewhere it's because it's made for flourocarbon line and it supposed to prevent birdsnest's. Im at a loss? Help!

Who ever told you it was for fluorocarbon is full of it.

First of all a 2500 is a bigger reel so if your drop shotting with heavier line that would be fine but it's a little big for 5 and 6 lb.

It's one of the lower end reels for Shimano but you should not be having that problem. The oscilation gear might be bad if it's not going up and down.

Let me ask you these two questions.

1 Is it a new reel?

2 Have you switched the spools out?

If its a new reel send it back or send it to Shimano and let them know what is happening.

Second if you are switching the spools out then theres a chance that the other spacer is on there which is causing the spool to sit a little bit higher which would cause the line wrap under the spool. It's happend to me before.

Hope this helps you out.

It sounds like the spool isn't pushed down all the way on the spool shaft. It should click into place when you put the spool on the shaft.

I have 2 of these reels and they rock :) The wife and I have caught many fish drop shotting with these reels.

If the spool does not go up and down AND it's properly mounted on the shaft I'd return it for a refund or replacement.

I have these reels and have had no problem with them at all. I drop-shot and dart head with both. Have been using 6lb. seagar floro and it works great unless you over fill the spool.
I have used mine rite out of the box and didn't have to add any spacers that were provided.
Do what stock said about pushing down the spool until it clicks in and if your still having a problems take it back.
I know a few guys that use these as well and haven't heard of any problem's like this.

I also use these for drop shotting and dart heading...they are great reels!!! Sounds like the spool is not engaged all the way, like Stockoption said. Push it down while turning it till it clicks and locks into place. If that still doesn't work, then you may have a lemon....send it back!

I love the rear drag and the double paddle handle on these reels. And even though they are not as nice as some of the top of the line Shimano's, I don't think you can say they are on the low end either. They have some great features for $79 and will last you a lifeime if you take care of them!

If the spool is not locked into the spool shaft all the way then that will cause your problem. If the spool is not oscillating (moving up and down) then return the reel to the dealer for exchange. If they give you a hard time then shoot me a PM and I will let you know what to do.

I have used Symetres for my clients for years and have never had a problem. We just wear them out and get new ones, which get better and better!

right on, thanks for all the posts/help/info guys. I've tried to "engage" and make sure the spool is on right but after it "clicks" is still doesn't go up and down. The only time I took the spool off was to put line on it so I'm pretty sure I got a lemon. I gotta call the place where I bought it, but I'm pretty sure they will say send it to the Shimano dealer. And thanks for the offer Dan (bantam1) on advice/help if I have any hangups with Shimano! Tight lines......

The dealer should exchange the reel for you. If not send me an IM and I will get the reel repaired or replaced for you.
