I woke on Monday morning in TX on a 6 week school trip for the Air Force to the TV special notice from the control room on MSNBC that a shoting had happened at VT. I was glued to the TV for the next 9 hours just watching with my mouth open.
As a military member I see a lot of death and dispair. But, I can honestly say I have never seen a situation like the one that was unfolding infront of my eyes. I have been staioned in S. Korea twice and Koreans are some of the most honest people and care for all, even if not related.
I have spent the last week with the thoughts in Virginia in the back of my mind. Wondering what new information was next to come out.
Tonite, I sit in my hotel room gearing up for the NASCAR race in AZ. I was a HUGE NASCAR fan but as of late I have left the sport due to the commercialism. But, as the pre-race show started a lone VT hat lay on the announce booth. Sights of VT logos on all cars and the story of the senseless act.
Then it came to me, closing. I realized the power of sports and our society and how sports can help heal the wounds of sorrow. When a nation is at a low point, sports can and will always come to the top of the cream.
Sports effect our everyday lives and give us a sense of closer and hope though the toughest of times.
I thanks NASCAR for showing us that what happened in Virginia is as close to us as the TV infront of us.
Tonite and forever I am a Virginian.
