Spook and Jitterbug questions ?

Post by SHAFT »

The hooks attach to a screwed in little bracket that restricts the swivel of the hook , I was told to cut the hooks of and add a split ring with new hooks so the hooks would swivel 360 deg. . This makes sense to me but I am wondering why the restrictive bracket to begin with ? Is this what you guys are doing ?

I always add a split and gamakatsu hooks, and if you're gonna use the super spook, be sure to upgrade the split rings and hooks as both are extremely cheap and weak.

The spook is smaller and has two hooks and the superspook is a little bigger, longer and has three hooks...

I've seen those factory hooks bend out on a Mendo striper. I change out to red Gami #2 round bend in front & a #2 stinger feathered treble in back. I also add #3 split rings to both hooks -but be warned, there are some cheap (Danielson, for one) split rings out there that will bend out after a dozen or so fish.

Some guys say the feathered rear hook attracts fish to the back of the bait....or hinders the bait's motion in the water, but I like the way it looks, & I hook up just fine. The split rings do help your hooks swing more freely, & I did notice better hookups. Who knows if the red front hook makes any difference? It's just 'lucky' for me...

Super spook was made for salt water: Bigger, beefier, has split rings, 3 good hooks already. Mine worked fine right out of the box.

For a REALLY super spook, check this out:

I'm getting one for Mendocino......might even throw it here....if my swimbait rod'll handle it...

I always use the super spook salt water version. No hooks to change out and split rings are large !! Nothing breaks or bends them !! Try them you will like them......We stock, sell and use them here.

The original Zara Spook that was/is made by Heddon has no rattles and the two hooks are attached by the old fashioned screwed-in hangers.

Then Excalibur (another PRADCO brand--PRADCO also owns Heddon, Bomber, Arbogast, Cordell, Rebel, etc) came out with the Super Spook, which is an improved version of the spook. It has rattles and molded-in hook hangers. The large version has three hooks, the Spook Jr. has two hooks.

More Spook history here:

Pradco bought Heddon in '84...I say: bless 'em for seeing the potential in these baits. I get a kick out of fishing a plug like the one Grandad fished with in the 40's & 50's.
