Our most miserable city last year, Stockton, Calif., nabbed the second spot on this year's list. Unemployment and crime continue to be major issues. Stockton ranked seventh worst in both of these areas. Stockton residents have average commutes that are among the highest in the country and, like all Californians, they suffer from onerous sales and income taxes.

Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston says the city is working to fix its problems. It has seen a reduction in crime in recent months as it targets troubled areas with an increased police presence. On the economic front, the city recently expanded the Port of Stockton, which it hopes will attract new companies. Stockton is an agricultural community, but the Mayor says the city is working to diversify its economic base and echoes Silliman's comments about Cleveland. "We're an All-American city," says Mayor Johnston. "And it's not because we sit on our hands and do nothing. It's because we recognize our problems and work to solve them."

I've lived in many places, and currently live in Stockton. It's not the best place I've lived, but It's sure not the worst either. Other than getting hit hard in this "housing bubble" and economy, not sure what's so different from about 500 other cities just like it.

Stockton surely is not the best place to live, yet the reasons they give are truly issues throughout the Delta communities.. Housing issues, long commutes, gangs and unemployment are issues every one of our communities have to deal with. Firing on how about Stockton is compared to other Delta communities is silly... Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Tracy, Manteca, Discovery Bay and Sacramento all have there issues.... We should be doing what we can to improve our communities instead of calling out orgs using Stockton.

Our area is some of the best located properties in the Country, basically Hour or from everywhere. The Coast The Mountains and the River!

Bottom line if you think your stuff is safer in any of these communities your kiddin yourself...

Stockton is stepping up with great facilities, decent resteraunts and a rebuilding downtown. If You Love the Delta Support All Delta Areas

Bottom line if you think your stuff is safer in any of these communities your kiddin yourself...

I like the approach Dan, but in the last couple few years the greater Stockton/Modesto area has set itself apart as having much higher crime rates then many other Delta communities.

It's kind of like comparing Oroville to Gridley Dan. Living there, you know there's big differences.

Ya I understand the East Side of the Delta is a bit worse crime wise. Yet the whole area has had some high profile cases the last year that Kidnap guy Garrido? was Oakley/Antioch, The murderer Chick,( the little Tracy girl). The torture case Tracy (boy held captive for years).... Sure there are much more but I don't look for the bad, I choose to support the Delta and bringing visitors here!

I think the intent of the original poster was a not-so-subtle shot at the FLW for moving their tourny to Stockton. So, it could be loosely called "fishing related".

I live in Stockton. Yes there's crime. Yes the housing bubble hit Stockton hard. I went fishin' today, launching out of Buckley Cove, and we caught some fish in the cold wind. Then I went out for some great Tai food. Life's pretty good for me here in Stockton . If you're miserable, you'll be miserable in any town you live in. If you're happy, you can be happy in Stockton .

Please. I had $900 worth of stereo equipment stole out of my driveway in one of the richest areas of Northern Virginia. In Savannah Georgia, the house next to me, someone broke into the house and shot the owner, I heard the shot from his shotgun. That picture you posted doesn't prove anything to make Stockton that different than many places, nobody claimed it doesn't have any crime.

There is crime everywhere, I'm not saying that the other delta communities are perfect. What I am saying is that you have a better chance of getting your a** shot off or victimized there than in the surrounding areas. The pic is just an example of what I have seen there.........capiche?

Seriously? I have no reason to lie. I live in Brentwood and fish all over the delta. Of all the surrounding areas the only place I would worry about my gear or look over my shoulder while refueling is Stockton. Not trying to be a d*ck, but the gang problem should be accounted for when discussing the place. The more people know, the more they can look out for themselves.

Your not very street smart if the only place on the Delta you worry about your gear while refueling along with gang activity is Stockton. Good luck to you in your gated community.

What link, that came off my digital cam? Sorry if the truth hurt you a bit buddy. The only place I have witnessed tweakers stalking out a solo launch and pillaging the boat when the owner parked was in Stockton. (not to be confused with the stolen car issues) I am always on alert over there. Other places not so much. No gated community for me over here. But I do enjoy the luxury of not being shot at every day...

Wana go somewhere where you can feel safe? Try Vermont. It is ranked in the top 5% states with the lowest crime rate.

You may also want to know that any person that can own a handgun legally can carry it concealed and loaded. One of thew few if not the only state that do not require a permit for carrying a concealed weapon.

Dont know how the fishing is there but I bet your gear would be safe in your boat

Arizona is considering implementing the same "carry" law. No CCW permit required if passed, and it looks like it will.
