Sturgeon fishing info
If you’re a sturgeon angler in California, you know that you need to purchase an annual Sturgeon Report Card and then return it at the end of the year -- but you may not know why.
Gathering information on our state’s sturgeon is difficult, but it’s necessary so that CDFW biologists can manage the fishery and keep it healthy for future generations. When anglers fill out and return their card by mail or online, they’re providing important data that helps biologists track when, where and how many sturgeon are being caught and harvested, as well as catch and release rates and which species of sturgeon are being caught. It sounds like simple information, but it’s incredibly valuable for tracking the population size for purposes of conservation and management. Anglers who return the report card are not only fulfilling reporting requirements, but also serving as stewards of the state’s natural resources. Every year, CDFW publishes a technical summary of the data that were collected from the Sturgeon Report Card over the previous card season. This information is also available to sturgeon enthusiasts on the CDFW website.
