Sunken bogs?
Sunken bogs?
Just wondering about these heard they are good when you can find them. Was just wanting to know a little more about them. Situation I am kind of looking at is a large bay filled with weeds about 6 to 8 foot all the way across this massive bay. I happened upon a sunk peat bog it's old, no vegetation on top. I know it doesn't float in the warmer months. It's about 3 foot deep on top and 6 to 8 foot off the edges. Will the fish spawn on top of this or is it more of a pre-spawn post spawn summer deal? Like to hear everyone's opinion on what the know or think!
Re: Sunken bogs?
Structure is structure - on the delta there are peet beds, or sunken bogs, tree roots, old ships, rocks, dock pilings all are good forms of structure. I would treat your sunken bog as teh same a piece of structure that may or may not hold fish according to season. I would also asert that it retain heat and be hard so likley a place for a big spawner depending on current and depth.

Re: Sunken bogs?
I personally have never seen a bass here spawn directly on top of an un-lodged peat mound. I have though seen plenty of bass spawning next to and around these mounds. I believe that given the option of spawning next to the hard structure of the mound, where there is grass cover all around them, it offers a greater level of spawning preference versus being right on top of the mound where they are fully exposed, no immediate cover and could potentially go dry if the tide falls out too far. Granted I'm sure you'll have someone come in and say "yes" they have seen it, and I wouldn't dispute it, it is possible, but for the most part, it's not common. You'll see bass spawning on big open cement slabs, ramps on docks and even the step ladders of boats and docks in Disco Bay, yet in each case, they have some form of immediate security of some cover that they can dart into with ease.
I have seen and caught boat loads of bass around the many peat mounds and the holes, those left behind when one up and floats away. Pre-spawn, summer and fall, those peat mounds, holes and large grass beds nearby, are a bass magnet here. And it does not matter what flooded lake or pond ya find em in.
