Super Spook/Sammy 128

Post by Wild Bill »

I love throwing big topwaters such as these, because often times BIG Bass will eat them.

I find they almost seem to 'self-cull' out the smaller fish from attacking them.

When do you guys throw them ?
What conditions do you like for them ?

How do you trick out the hooks on them?

Any colors been standouts for you ?

When would you throw smaller similar baits instead of these bigger ones?

On the Super Spooks, I take all three factory-supplied hooks and spilt rings off.
Then, on the first hook eye and also the rearmost eye, I put a split ring and then a size 2/0 Gamakatsu heavy-wire treble that I get at Coyote Tackle.
The third spilt ring I put on the line tie then.

Now, it's ready to throw, for me.

Smallies, Largemouth, and Northern Pike eat it good.

What do you guys do ??

Hey Bill, I don't fish the Super Sppoks, but on the regular spooks, I change out the hooks and sometimes put a feathered hook on the rear..I put a red hook on the front..

I use to use super spooks all year round. Fall and winter they can get some big fish. Since the Lunker Punker came out, the spooks are put away. If you like big topwater baits the Punker is the way to go. Owner hooks, custom paint jobs if you want, and getting big fish is not a problem.

With the super spooks I do one of two things, either add a feather to the rear or i replace both front and rear hooks with sure set hooks. The walking action is affected slightly but not enough to deter me from using them.

Lunker Punker

Post by Wild Bill »

Dude,

I'd LOVE to be able to afford the Lunker Punker, but right now, I am saving up to pay for my daughter's upcoming wedding, so my fishing budget is VERY LOW to nearly non-existent.
Once I can rebound from the wedding fees, etc in a year or two, I will then be buying one [or some]

I have seen the Lunker Punker in action while fishing the Delta with Gator this past May [and also watching videos of them from Back Dog's site], and indeed, it looks AWESOME, as do the Shellcrackers, as well.

In time....

Try a Vixen. You will like it. Walks better than a Super Spook for me. Feather on the back hook.

Re-asking same question [but amended]

Post by Wild Bill »

My daughter is getting married next May, so my BUDGET IS VERY LIMITED for tackle these days.

While I would LOVE to be able to spring for PRICEY big topwaters, that IS NOT THE CASE right now.

What modifications are you guys doing to the Super Spooks/Spooks to make them better fish catching tools ?
At $4.99 and $5.99 a pop, those do work in my budget, especially since I have 5 Super Spooks already, several Spooks, and one 128 Sammy.

So, my question is : How do you modify your bigger Spooks?
What size and brand of hooks do you use when you "trick out" the hooks ?
What other modifications do you make ?

Daughters can be expensive as all get out, but for the most part I found they were well worth it..Both of mine are grown and gone..They can at times interfere with your tackle addiction, can't they..Still, I wouldn't trade them for the world..

Mac,

My daughter has brought me much happiness and made me very proud of her in many ways.

I want her to have a wedding to remember, but I am not a man of heavy money, so we'll do the best we can do so it is.
