For those that use Sweet Beavers as football head jig trailers when targeting largemouth, do you prefer the Smallie Beaver 3.50 or regular Beaver 4.20? If you use the 4.20 do you cut any off or run it full size?
I love using Sweet Beavers alone, but haven't gained confidence with them as a football jig trailer. I mainly use double tails and pork.

The Smallie is a good trailer, but that too I prefer to fish as its own bait, like the regular size beaver.
Also you might consider how you rig the smallie as a trailer, if you pig rig it, (just punch the hook thru the top end of the body, instead of threading it on the hook, you achieve a much larger profile, plus the bait swings around a little more giving it more action.

Re: Sweet Beavers as football head jig trailer
It depends on where you fishing, spotted bass reservoir or a predominat largemouth lake. I always throw the 4.20 or 5.20 (double wide beaver) at any lake I go to. I don't even own a smallie beaver. Wether I'm using the 4.20 or 5.20, I cut the first 2 ribs off of it. The 5.20 is better at Clear Lake and the Delta because there are larger fish and those trailers will draw larger bites. The 4.20 is good for just about any lake
If you are fishing a lake with mainly spots, but it still has some largemouth, I tend to mainly catch the largemouth rather then spots, and it seems my numbers always go down compared to a double-tailed grub.

I fish largemouth only reservoirs. I prefer to thread the sweet beaver on. Never really thought about poking through the top. I may try cutting off the first couple of ribs or so.

After fishing these as my primary trailer...I will not fish anything other than the Double Wide going forward. The fish don't mind the bigger bait and you get BIGGER bites.
Double wide is the ONLY way to go in my opinion.

While the 4.2 may be the most common, the double wide seems better for flipping or punching in the delta, and berserkbaits makes a similar bait called a brawler...in 2.5, 3.5, 4.2, and 5.2. These baits on small jigs are awesome....I'd match the crawdad size normally, but oversize baits work great too!....I know at a recent show the tiny brawler 2.5 sold like crazy in socal..so they are going finese.
