Swim Baits

Post by VJ »

Hey guys just got a some Weedless Hud 6inch and when i throw them they swim sideways, ive talked to a few people and they said to boil them. Just wanted to ask if anyone has already done this and have any tips. (maybe something i need to stay away from, how long to boil it, ect..) Thanks

No expert but have had some Hudd issues myself in the past. Typically the "boiling" is to fix crooked or kinked tails. A bait swimming on its side is more likely an internall harness issue. Who knows though, i like to boil my tails anyway becuase it "softens" them a tad allowing more kick or the bait to be worked slower. I usually do 30-60 seconds up to about the hook chamber, dont fully submerge the bait. Dunk in cold water for a few and let it hang dry.

As far as the crooked bait, you can try grabbing the line tie or nose/mouth area of the bait and GENTLY bending the middle harness portion of the bait to correct it. opposite the side its swimming on. To much though and you can damge the harness completley. This has been an issue with some of the hudds as of late though, especially on the 6 inch baits. You could aslo be reeling to fast...try slowing your retreive. The smaller baits are much more sensitive to irregularities and to reel speed IMO.

Good luck man.

A lot of people have this issue with the weedless 6" Hudd. I would send it back.

A few years back, we had several thousand swim baits made in China. We did not want to ship in a shipping container, so we had them shipped air freight. What we did not realize is they were boxed in bulk packs and the weight of all baits made for some really bent and flat tails.

I guess you might call me an expert on boiling plastic swim baits. Still boiling baits after 5 years.
You can boil just the tails up to the first fin. But if the whole body is bent? Boil the whole bait, hang up by the hook eye. This will give you the best results. If you can not hang bait? make sure you lay the bait very flat and the tails in the most natural out on a flat surface.
I never dip them in water to cool them. I always let them rest for a couple days, this will allow the elasticity to come back into the plastic slowly.

You can boil plastics for 1 minute, this will give you the most natural results. If you want a little more softness in the tail? you can boil up to 3 minutes.

We have boiled our 7" Bass Pro Shop Stick O`s ( Senko type) for 5 minutes for the best results.

alot of the 6 in swims sideways from what ive heard. i had one myself and it does swim sideways. i boil it like what others say for about 10-15min and air dry it tail hanging down. this way when the plastic forms back, itll form straight. after boil mines it did swim alot better but not perfect.
