Swimbait Rod Choice
If you could only pick one swimbait combo, which ONE Swimbait rod would you choose:
A) Fig Rig
B) Okuma
C) Crucial
D) Other
Would you get Med/Hvy, Heavy, or Extra Heavy?
I have the Quantum Cabo PT30 Reel.

Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
My big swimbait rod is the Okuma extra heavy with an Abu 6501 reel. I like it although I havn't caught many fish on it yet. I can't throw it all day like you youngs guys can cause I'm old and weak. For the price range it is in I feel it is a pretty good rod coupled with the Abu which is pretty much bullet proof. Dan

Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
For the big swimbaits I use the St. Croix tournament series Mega Swimbait rod. For the smaller swimbaits I use the Tournament series Swimbait rod. Mike

I have the Okuma 7'11" ..... For the Price and the amount of time I "actually use it". -- It is a perfect fit for myself personally.
It is going on the deck tommorow as most days lately -- But if I actually use it -- Only tommorow will tell again.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

I have the Okuma 7' 11" XH. It's a great rod, especially for the price. For the price of ther Dobyn's you could probably get 2 or 3 of the Okuma's.

I also have the Okuma 7'11 GSH I have paired that up with a Cardiff 300, plenty of rod to throw small and 10-12in baits, and plenty spool to load up line and cast a mile. For the money and the warranty you cant go wrong with the Okuma

Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
Ide get the Crucial! Not expensive, lets you boat flip 10ers, and it wont break. Cant say that about the others. I think we've bounced some of the biggest bass on this rod and she never lets us down. If the crucial is a little too heavy the Powel sb711 h is the next best rod. very strong and very lite to hold. Just not as strong as the old crucials. good luck!

The Dobyns 795 ML swimbait rod is awesome. Pair it with a shimano curado 300 and 20 lb line and you are in business. Will handle all but the heaviest of swimbaits. Good all around swimbait rod with the tournament angler in mind.

Okuma 7" 11" Heavy, You can still throw light stuff and you can muscle some heavier stuff too.
As of right now, it's a bitchin rod for rockfish out on the jetty!!

Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
Successfull anglers know that speed control is the key to successful swimbait presentations. The 7'9" heavy Elite Tech SWIMBAIT rod with a fast tip is an exact combination of action, length, and handle components to precisely control swimbaits. With the control over the swimbait technique, an angler who uses this rod will have a serious advantage.

That's what I use as well. It's a great rod for the money. I use it for frogs and punching matts as well, it works great.12lblargemouth wrote:I also have the Okuma 7'11 GSH I have paired that up with a Cardiff 300, plenty of rod to throw small and 10-12in baits, and plenty spool to load up line and cast a mile. Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
These days I seem to use swimbait rods for lots of things, like Mike Tremont said
, I crank. jig, even use poppers
I like XH rods mostly. I like the power they have or the power I feel when reeling a big one in. At first everything seems big or over board in size like, baits, rods, reels even the fish you catch
. After a while things just don't seem as big as they once did.
Get what you are going for. If it's big fish your after get a rod that will get the big fish in. The XH rods bend plenty on a good one
There are a few nice rods out there to pick from. Just pic one that you would feel the big one will make it to the boat. I have tried a few swimbait rods that seem nice but I only use Okuma's and Dobyns 806 ML right now. I have used Okuma's for about 3 years now, first year with the Dobyns ML 806. I have not tried enough of the other rods (other then a few casts) to say these are my choice but I will say... They work for me. I guess if I used Crucial rods or the others I would find I like the XH rods they make too
Best of luck, Have fun!
I can't pick one
I need them all in my boat
Don.

Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
thanks for the replies......went to the tackle shop today and felt all of there swimbait rods. Crucials, gloomis, dobyns, okuma, and powell. I picked up the powell 711h. I was looking for one all around swimbait rod to go with my pt cabo 30. I liked the feel of the tip on the powell compared to the others.
What line should i spool up with? I will be fishing a lot of floaters but some sinkers. I was thinking 20lb clear pline cxx???

Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
You didn't mentioned the swimbaits that you will be throwing, but if they are in the price range of the Huds, Lunkers, MS Slammer, etc., you gotta to go with braid. I just got a powell 711mh and use 50lb braid when I'm throwing my Lunker or Slammer.
If I don't use braid, I am more worried about the condition of my line and check the line every couple of casts because I don't want to risk losing the expensive lure. I've seen plenty of my lures "fly off into the sunset" while casting due to nicks or kinks in the line.

Re: Swimbait Rod Choice
I use 20lb BPS mono for floaters, and 25lb BPS mono for sinkers. Haven't lost a swimbait yet due to line failure since I switched to BPS.
I have lost a few Huds with braid, due to snap off on the cast, and I used to get frayed line back with Sufix Siege, but the BPS is pretty indestructible.
I do retie often, if I'm fishing over rocks or through brush, and I cut my lures off every night after I fish, and retie them the next time I go out. The knot and first section where the line passes through the tip on the cast take a big strain with a heavy lure, so I check them all the time, and retie often.

I have seen plenty of baits fly away with braid too.
