tungsten weight trouble

Post by jimmy87 »

In recent years I have slowy switched over to tungsten and braided line in alot of my delta fishing. It seems that I have a problem. Every once in a while I break off on hook set. Its like the fish has razor teeth or somthing. Get a bite, set hook and come up emty. Just as if a pair of sissors cut the line. I never even feel the weight of the fish at all! its like swinging at air.

This happens with 50 pound power pro and 1/4 oz tungsten weight.
Also punching with 1oz tungsten and 80 pound power pro.
Gami hooks. I tie in a pice of braid in the hook eye to prevent the knot from sliding down into the end of wire to that gap if you know what I mean. really its the end of the wire that the hook is made of.
What gives? I have been checking my knots and line closely as I fish and have not found whats at fault yet.
When I fish lead this dose not seem to happen.
not using beads as I think the hard tungsten might crack them.
comments solutions experinces?

check your weight... any nick on the insert can and will cut through the braid line cleanly..

take some braid line and run it through your weights.. check to see if theres any kind of friction or resistance..

You gotta quit trying to set the hook on then toothy critters..You can also try pegging the weight, either using a rubber peg or a bobber stop, so your weight doen't move up and down the line as much..

X2 on the snell knot and checking for nicks in the weight and your guides. If not flipping tie palomar knots.

x2 on bobber stoppers.. i would stay away from pegs.. sometime they get stuck in the insert and its a pain to take them out

I have noticed when punching that the bobber stops will slide up the line. When this happens the weight will twist on the line, wrapping the braid over itself between the nose of the weight and the eye of the hook, and I am guessing, cutting the line. I use at least three bobber stops to keep my weight pinned next to the hook so this "wrap" does not happen.

thanks for all the input on this subject.
So is it just me or are you guys having these issues at all?

I got to thinking on the punch rig I am using toothpicks to peg with. That maybe a problem.
When Iam not punchin I do not peg but still have the problem. 5/16 1/4 texas rig

improved snell knot with braided line and witch hook?

You need something between the weight and the hook to prevent line damage. The problem is when the weight slides down and slams against the hook the weight is cutting the line at the knot. Think about it like this, your tungsten weight could be a few inches from your bait when you set the hook the hardened metal of the hook and the Tungesten weight slam together with the only thing between the two hard surface is your knot.
There are a few ways to help prevent this problem. As others have suggested is to tie a snell knot, use a punch skirt or put a bobber stopper between the hook and the weight. Try any of these and your problem should be solved.
Hope this helps. Jim
