JB Weld - Anybody use this stuff?

Post by Steve »

I found a line of cracks on the hull of my aluminum boat yesterday. Its still manageable but I will need to fix the problem somewhat soon. I was wondering if anybody has used the following product to fix leaky aluminum hulls and if so any feedback would be appreciated. I am particularly interested in the long term effectiveness, if it only fixes the leak for a short while its not worth my time.

A much better produce for sealing/repairing holes, etc. is Marine-Tec. Comes in both grey or white color. Most all good marine shops carry it. If you do not want to Heli-arc the hole/crack use this stuff. It works. Bill K :)

I use it all the time, Good stuff, Dont use the JB quik weld though. The regular JB weld is ALOT stronger.

JB Weld, Glu-Vit, Marine Tec all work fairly good. The key to a lasting fix is to make sure you sand the area to give it something to bond to, thoroughly clean it before applying anything.

I had a crack on the aluminum part of the Heater Hose that goes into the Block. I got a tube of JB weld and sealed the crack and Drove home from Clear lake. No leak, car ran cool, and engine lit went off. I Fixed it cheap. 6.49 for a tube. Works great.

yes it does, hands down beats anything I know of. If you have an aluminum boat and you want to seal a crack or a rivet nothing works better, including welding.

I sealed leaky rivets on my old aluminum and it held for a long time. It's starting to leak again though but I only used one small can of the stuff and only applied to the bottom of the boat not the inside. This stuff is great.

Talk about timing!

On my live-well the hinge on my cover the spots welds came lose. I was going too have it spot welded. Do you think Glu-vit, JB Weld, or Marine Tec would work just as good as a spot weld. Of the three which one would you pick for the application?

I have no experience in this area and the any help would be welcomed and appreciated.

have it welded. If you don't have someone to weld it, you can drop it off to me in Livermore and I'll do it for you at no charge.

I agree Marty, I don't think the JB would work to well for that. It's just a real hard epoxy resin type stuff.

From back in my racing days I know of a guy that fixed a crack/hole in a cylinder and was able to sand and bore a small hole in his repair. He was able to race the weekend without any trouble. It's good stuff. Good for that type on an application.
I had to come back...I know...
