What pound test?

Post by fishfan »

What pound test do you use the most on your baitcasters?

Thanks Jeff
I now know why it is called fishing and not catching!

Mostly for Delta or Clear Lake type conditions...

Jig rod - 20 lb Flouro
T-rig rod - 15 lb Flouro
Med/small swimbait rod - 20 lb Flouro
Crank/jerk bait rod - 12 lb Flouro
Topwater rod - 65 lb Braid

I'd probably lighten up a bit if fishing a lake where there's less cover.

14 lb trilene phantom green but I do not think color makes a difference on reaction style lures, I will actually use clear or green if they do not have green. Got my PB last year at Clear Lake on a Rapala DT 10 11.3 lbs!!! Hoping to beat that in a month:) Make sure you use a Glass rod, or Glass/graphite composit, I know that there are some really good full graphite rods out there know but glasss just seams to let those fish turn and fully inhale the bait before your set the hook, hence more landed fish. Also, stay with mono, you want some stretch with the crank bait rod, on the jig rod & drop shot I use floro but not the rip and crank.

I typically fish lighter line than most guys due the lakes I fish around here. But my local lake is just like Delta and Clear Lake cover wise.

For open water lakes and light cover;

T-rigs, Senko, Flukes,Jigs, Worms- 10-12lb. flouro
Drop shot, split shot, other finesse- 4-6lb. flouro
Cranks, rips, or small topwater- 10-12lb. mono

In cover or docks;

T-rigs, Senkos, Plastics, Flukes, Jigs, Worms- 12-20 lb flouro, 12 being the on the light end.
Drop Shot, finesse- 6-12lb flouro
Cranks, rips, smaller topwater- 12-15 lb. mono

To tell you the truth, in most cases I'm fishing 12-15 lb. flouro or mono on most of my rods, depending on if I'm fishing reaction or plastics. I'm also one of those crazy guys who will fish 6lb. around the tules when the bite gets real tough. But even my drop shot is typically at least 10lb. flouro when I'm cover fishing. From time to time, I'll put 10lb. on my rip rod. There are a few exceptions I make for open and cover fishing. I use 30-50lb. braid for Spooks and buzzbaits, even in open water.
