I understand that bluegill, bass, smallmouth and crappie are in the sunfish family...i guess what i was getting at more specificly...how many in the bluegill family...the redear and bluegill....are there anymore??...besides the little red dot on the side of the head is there any general color differences between these two??...I purchased a mattgill green sun fish color pattern but i wanted the male bluegill but they were out so I settled, i think this will effect my confidience while throwing this bait( we know how that goes), so i was just wondering if there is that big of a difference between the mattgill green sunfish color and the species of bluegill that swimm in the delta.

"Bluegill" isn't a family--it's the "common name" for just one species in the Centrarchid or sunfish family.

In addition to the Delta sunfish species already mentioned in posts above, add the following:

1. black crappie
2. white crappie
3. green sunfish
3. rock bass
4. warmouth

How about phrasing it like this? "Look, asshats, How many fish in the Delta look a lot like Bluegill?" :D

Known species of centrachids in California (all of which are in the Delta to some extent).

Lepomis macrochirus - bluegill
Lepomis cyanellus - green sunfish
Lepomis microlophus - redear sunfish
Lepomis gibbosus - pumpkinseed
Lepomis golosus - warmouth
Pomoxis annularis - white crappie
Pomoxis nigromaculatus - black crappie
Archoplites interruptus - Sacramento perch
Micropterus salmoides - largemouth bass
Micropterus dolomieu - smallmouth bass
Micropterus punctulatus - spotted bass

That should answer you question.
