What the heck is Bass Alley?

Post by Dave Wilson »

Met a lot of really great anglers as usual at Clear Lake at the AC TOC, and heard lots of advice too. I do have to admit lots of people mentioned "Bass Alley" to me and I have no idea where this is.
Congrats to all who did so well, and congrats to you locals for living in such a beautiful area with such a fine fishery.

Bass Alley is across form Red Bud launch ramp- kind of to the south of the launch ramp- it's a drop-off that is at the mouth of the cove to the rounded point to the west. Kind of a numbers spot this time of year with some good fish too, cranks and swimbaits baby!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but I lived there for 20 years , and there were a few places refered to as Bass alley back then anyway. Kinda like the last big buck I killed was at Billy Goat Peak..

I lived here since 1997 and saw it on an old map once. I can't remember where it was and can't tell by the above instructions where he means. I'd say, bass alley is wherever you catch the most bass.

Bass Alley is a rock reef that runs from the north tip of the island that is right across from the ramp at Red Bud and runs about 500 yards north heading towards the first docks just before you make the turn into Jago Bay. It has a 4 to 5 foot break on it. Has been a pretty good spot for years.

Jigs and Greg I think you guys are holding back not telling about Bass Alley.......sounded like one of Dee's answers Greg "Bass Alley is where you are catching the most fish".......now where is that damn Pilot Slough

I spent 3 days on Clear lake trying to prepare for the A/C tourney, and had to withdraw. I have no clue as to what was going on fished that lake for 19 hrs and had one small fish to show for it my partner did not have one bite and was just as frustrated as I was so we decided to save our money and come home. Does anyone have any idea what was going on, I mean there were guys catching fish I just could not figure it out. This was my 4th time there and I have only had one good day on that lake. I would appreciate any feed back.

D,

I went through the same thing earlier this year, and on our 4th or 5th time out to CL we started making our own pattern. This lake is full of fish you just have to stick to the basics when it comes to where the fish will be. Main points, docks, submerged rocks ect. I had limited success on this lake until I went back to basics and quit asking to much from others. When I did it had a 20 fish day!

Good Luck

KB has it right: a nice rocky ledge, 3 ft. drop in places...

Good place to 'slow roll', too.

Bass Alley, is ClearLake's version in the fall, of Frank's Tract in the spring! Just one of them community spots on the south end that hold numbers of fish at this time of year. Time it right, when ya got it to yerself, tournaments have been won there! Just like Glennhaven Reef! Fall transition hiway fer the bass!

It's also an AWESOME spot fer GIANT catchfish this time of year! HAR! HAR! HAR!

PS. I heard a rumor we got some GIANT horned ELK in Pilot this season? Wudda you know bout that KB?

Hats off to the guys fishing the north side . That place looks like a friggen desert to me. It all looks the same . Im sure there are lots of subtle breaks and rock piles but good lord , where does a guy start . Miles and miles of the same shallow water .

Hey Dave Wilson,

KB has the correct answer, I have been fishing Clear Lake for about 18 years now and I first heard about it from Al Freitas who used to own Don's Bait and tackle on Lakeshore drive.

Bass Alley runs from the rocky point on Indian island to the point opposite side of Red Bud launch ramp, If you were on the rocky point on Indian Island and looked North West you would see a set of steps that go about 50-70 yards straight up the hill to a house, its the only set of stairs like that from that veiw point. I have followed that 4-5 foot break from the island to the steps many of times and yes got lots of fish on it, however, this is not a rocky break, there is a little structure here and there but mosty clay or hard bottom again I have fished the whole thing many of times and you can drag a jig up and down that break and almost never get hung up, what holds the fish there is just the simple fact that its by far the biggest break on that flat, in fact it might be the only break on that flat and yes its about 400-500 yards.

Alot of guys also drift for catfish there.
