What to do with 200 Pounds of Lead

Post by Greg_Cornish »

First of all mods - I'm not spamming for sales I asking for suggestions.

About 2 years ago a guy thats retired and used to manufacture and sell tackle in Northern CA . When he retired he had a full warehouse or two of both saltwater and freshwater tackle. I was going to ebay it all for him. He started me out with lead tackle - spinners and Jigs.

Now the stuff is twenty years old and painted. Not with the current miracle paints and powders but old style paint that flaked off easily. This means I can't sell it for as much as the tackle stores sell theirs. So if I can't get a lot out of it I can't afford to ship it because no-one on ebay wants to buy the 500 jigs it takes to fill a flat rate box. Today I sorted through 223 lbs of the stuff thats been lying on the floor of my office for 2 years.

I found out recently that he just decided to clean up his estate and donated all his tackle to a charitable resale organization. I asked if he wanted me to take this to them too. He said, "No, keep it, and have fun with it."

These are 1/4 spinner baits. I don't know if these are ever used for bass any longer. The lightest I've seen is 3/8. I have pound upon pound of these he never finished before he retired. They just have the straight wire and no spinners. No spinners were provided to put on either.

I have these in several colors, but the paint comes off easily. They are 1/4 or 3/8 football heads and no weed guard. Do people still use this type of Jig?

Unfortunately I don't have to many of these. but they are about 3/8th and in about 3 colors. I'll probably play with these.

I'm going to order some white skirts for these. I couldn't believe how much my buddy got bit on a all white jig in the south end the other day.

This is the most plentiful jig I have. 3/8 OZ. He says they were made for bucktails. After 20 years many were rusted and I disposed of them, but I kept thousands of good ones. I sold some on ebay and after all the charges actually lost money.

These have a golden pearl color but again they are not weedless. They look to be 1/2 OZ

I have a bunch of horsehair 1/2 OZ jigs. Any old timers ever use these?

Image

I don't even know what this is. They are unpainted and I took two blades of another rusty spinner and put them on here. I have a lot of these with no blades. Anyone know what they are?

These went to storage after 4 hours of sorting.

Do you think any jig maker would be interested in buying these for the lead and re-melting? Are any of these worth anything?

Greg,
Consider to donate them to the youth orgs on this site. they can always use spare tackle and kids surely find new ways to use even the "old school" tackle.

Oh, I see: give the lead directly to youth and bypass the Chinese toy manufacturers. Keep the lead in the US, I say! USA! USA! USA!

If you don't donate it to a youth organization, try Tim Sellars. Give the Manteca store a call to get in touch with him. He might be interested.

parlay this tackle into a free stay at one of the lodges in Mexico. I'm sure folks from 3rd world countries would love to have some your goodies.
