Can I say something? This is a great forum. Think about it, especially any of you who have spent much time out of the country. Everyone can speak out on the things that matter to them--and better yet, do it on the way to the polls without fear.
Still, I confess, I have followed party lines for many years.
What concerns me most today (and this may be a result of living too long) is that each party tends to look at itself as absolutely right while seeing the opposition as absolutely wrong. But it wasn't always that way. It used to be that the parties looked at issues in a problem solving vein. The difference was, one side had one method, and the other party had another.
In fishing terms, one side saw drop-shotting the better method for those fish in 40 feet, while another said the Carolina rig was the best means. They both catch fish.
With so much overlap pushed into the "center" (including some issues you would never privately concur with but are forced to vote because they come with "the party") we kind of get what we get. Case in point, without prejudice, California's current governor. Compare his mantra with that of his "party" 10, 20 or 50 years ago. His celebrity made him electable, but he is quite something else than the traditional Republican.
Best we can hope for then? Men/women with integrity and displaying the best qualifications for the job (which we must carefully assess). If one looks at all the races in this light, not just the presidency, I actually see some good ones on both sides of the aisle.
Whatever you do though, don't be careless with your precious vote.
