Take a kid fishing, and don't forget about us older kids either..
The perfect way to cook bass...
After spending the day on Oroville catching 100 spotted bass with my grandsons, I let each of them take home a limit of "unders" for the frying pan. Their mom and dad met us at my house. Steve, their dad, immediately began showing the boys how to clean fish. They complained about the "guts" but he told them its important for them to understand where their food comes from. He's a great dad!
While Steve and the boys toiled with those spots, I fired up the BBQ with a healthy load of hickory based charcoal. They brought out the fish, coated liberally with a mayonaise/lemon juice mix and added plenty of lemon pepper. Now, my grill has two sides so I gave Steve the left side for those fish.
On "my" side, a seared a 24ounce Porterhouse steak covered in my own seasoning mix and grilled to medium rare. When the fish were done, the boys and their parents picked little chunks of meat off the spotted bass carcasses while my wife and I polished off the Porterhouse. I'd say that was the best "fish dinner" I ever ate! LOL!

Re: Who eats Bass?
You guys are cracking me up. Bass is the grossest fish I've ever eaten in my life. Stunk up the whole kitchen, tasted diguuuuusting! We ate one largemouth and one smallmouth when I was a kid and swore never again.
Any fish that you have to embalm in batter and fry until the flavor of the fish is unrecognizable is not one that I care to eat.

I don't know where you caught the fish you ate, but I sure would like to so that I don't ever bring any home from there..Bass properly done is a mild tasting fish..Of course here in California you have to be wary of the mercury level in the water you take the fish from..Those bass caught in clean water weighing about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds can make excellent eating, although I do prefer other species of fish more..

Hey Rob
Your first mistake was trying to eat a 13 pound largemouth and 7 pound smallmouth
Seriously though, everybody has different tastes but if what you described actually happened you either kept a fish out of the wrong lake, or you didnt cook them right.
You said any fish you have to coat with batter to mask the taste....
Exactly! Thats why I dont coat the fish with a store bought batter or any other heavy batter. I use flour seasoned with what I like. The flour coating (vs batter) is very light and it DOES NOT mask the flavor of the bass at all. I bet if you tried it again you would like it.
Now, if you go catch a bunch of 13 inch spots out of say Folsom or Oroville, and cook them right, and still dont like them then so be it. You just werent meant to eat bass.

Re: Hey Rob
On with Steve on this one. I HATE cooked fish but I love to eat bass. I rarely batter and fry bass, TI just marinade the fillets and throw them on the grill.

The fish we ate were out of Cachuma 'bout 15 years ago. I don't remember the details on the preparation, all I know is that the whole house reeked like fish for hours afterward and no one in the fam took more than two bites of it. It's just funny to be on here reading tips for how to cook bass when there's so many other better eating fish. JMO! Give me striper, salmon, tuna, rockfish, white seabass, yellowtail, trout, or halibut but the bass, y'all can have um.
