For 26 years, Western Outdoor News has been hosting othe most popular striper fishing events in the world, and it's back again this year.

Well, this marks our 27th Derby, and once again, WON will be hitting the Havasu heat in May to dole out a plethora of prizes , and fun in the sun, to the hundreds of participants certain to make the annual trip.

If last year’s Striper Derby provided any indication of the popularity of the annual tournament in terms of both angling appeal and prize packages, this year’s event — slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16 — stands to be bigger than ever.

With an impressive array of sponsors donating prizes covering every facet of the angling arena and beyond, in addition to cash awards for the Saturday and Sunday Blind Bogey Contest, it goes without saying that anglers, both new and returning, stand to find success both on and off the water.

And in terms of angling productivity, the Striper Derby always taps into the best action of the entire year at Lake Havasu. Last year’s Derby kicked out a record-setting fish in the form of a 31.12-pound lineside by the team of Randall Copeland and Mike Alvarado.

Once again acting as the base of operations for this year’s event, the Nautical Inn, located adjacent to the lakeshore, will host the wildly-popular tournament. Location aside, the grounds of the hotel also provide an ideal setting and backdrop for the Striper Derby, boasting a spacious lakeside area for the weigh-in and festivities, and of course the Naked Turtle Bar and Grill located a mere stone’s throw from the festivities. For a post-weigh-in beverage, or welcomed respite from the Havasu heat, the Turtle is tough to beat.
