Your go to striper lure

Post by Luckyfisherman »

In this thread I just wanted to collect an idea "Go to" lure for Striper. When you first get to the lake what is your first lure you trust the most to start out fishing?

Let me share my 2 cents. When out on the water my first lure I will throw is a jerk bait. I love throwing lucky craft 100's in pearl white with a owner feather treble hook.

Something that I have been trying to throw from the bank is the lake fork flutter spoon. Hopefully I will get a bite on a spoon. I've been trying it at the california aqueduct to prevent from snagging. The last time out on the lake I snagged it on the second cast. What a waste of 10 dollars.

Anyways, post up!

My "Go To" lure for stripers is a 3/4 oz Rat L Trap (color - diamond dust). I throw it in the delta and if stripers are in the area, I'll catch one in the first couple of casts.

I usually have couple rods:

1. Punker
2. Spook
3. 3/4oz. trap
4. pointer 100
5. Senko, for the missed bites of course!

My go-to would be a regular old Hopkins spoon. Change out that clay treble hook! Fished vertical or horizontal. Pretty basic, but has caught me loads of fish.

On lakes, if the fish are active, but finicky, I go with a 1/8-1/4 oz. dart head and a Yamamoto or Keeper Salt n' Pepper grub. Not the most fun way to hook 'em, but works very well for me.

The Smithwick Rattlin' Rogue in clown pattern was dynamite, but has been replaced by the LC Pointer, from the 110 down to the 78. I have a lot of confidence in the Ghost Minnow color.

For big bites, I like the Punker, Pencil Poppers, RatLTraps, and I have had some success on a big pearl or rainbow trout Tora Tube.

My favorite striper lures in preferance:

1. Topwater - Super Spook or Chug Bug (Chrome/Blue)
2. Rat-L-Trap
3. Swimbait - Fish Trap Type or 7" Zoom Super Fluke on a jig head
4. Chartruese Bucktail Jig w/Zoom white Trick Worm trailer
5. Jigging spoons

Top water bite was not very good for me this year in the Stockton area. I've noticed this year the majority of the stripers I was catching this year (biggest 8 lbs.) were hanging around the bottom. I would look for the schools on my fish finder and drop the jigging spoon down to them. Possibly why this season was so bad for me were the seals/sea lions I've noticed hanging around the area all the time. It's been a long time since I've nailed a decent sized striper.

if i'm looking for numbers and the water has some color to it, I will go with a 3/4oz Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap in #161, if the water is really clear then I will go with some kind of a 5" swimbait in either white or rainbow trout. If it's size I gotta go with a Pencil Popper
