Westernbass Magazine, Spring 2017
Hi All, Looks like it’s time to kick off a new season of fishing. For some of us in California, that may be on hold due to the high water levels. We are excited to see the fishing trips and tournaments resume in areas that have been affected. I would like to congratulate the Wild West Bass Trail for their record attendance 181 boat draw at their Shasta event and to Best Bass Tournaments for their 128 boat draw at their Northern Region opener at Berryessa. Like longtime WesternBass viewer Jeff Huth said – I think we are safe to say that the fisherman in and around NorCal are ready to fish!!! And, how exciting is to watch – what seems to be an endless supply – of world record-sized spotted bass be caught and sent in to IGFA for certification. Who knows where the next one will come from, what it will weigh and who will catch it – could it be you? Lastly, I want to share my thoughts and prayers with those, such as the Clear Lake, Oroville and Delta residents, that are facing uncertainty and loss due to flooding and evacuations that have occurred because of the rains.

Swimbaits for Spring Smallmouth
Smallmouth as a species love to chase baits. That makes swimbaits perfect for chasing bronzebacks, especially during the spring before they start to spawn. Since the fall is another primetime for smallmouth, I work backwards from the last place I catch them in the fall and make sure I select the right bait when I prepare for spring smallmouth.

Fishing the Spring to Summer Transition
As bass have completed their spawn, some will continue to live up shallow all year long. These bass will take up residence around hard cover, such as boat docks, laydowns or riprap. The bass relate to this shallow cover as their home; they live around it as it provides protection from predators and a good location to use as a food source. This hard cover will also more than likely have a consistent presence all year long.

Springtime Cranking in Clear Water Reservoirs
Bass will use these structural elements as staging areas on their journey. The great thing to remember about these kind of spots is that they have a tendency to replenish themselves over time as new groups of fish head for the bank. Keep in mind that once the fish have finished their spawning duties, they will once again use these locations as they migrate back to deeper water during the post spawn.

Westernbass Magazine, Spring 2016
I am certainly ready for a new season of bassin’ and hope you are too. I’ve been excited to kick off the year with coverage of the International Sports Shows in Sacramento and Scottsdale as well as the Fred Hall show. Stay tuned for upcoming tank seminars on WesternBassTV, if you missed the shows. This year, WesternBass was excited to bring site users video clips from our western anglers at the Bassmaster Classic. I will be watching and cheering them on throughout the year. I would like to congratulate Lowrance pro Edwin Evers for his outstanding win at Grand Lake for the Classic championship – 29 pounds! Wow! I would to like remind anglers that WesternBass offers many features on the site to make tournament planning easy. Under the Interactive tab, we have the Tournament Calendar and Special Events with Digital Guides for all of the Wild West Bass Trail events. Under the Delta tab, you will find moon phases, weather, water temps and tide charts to help plan a fun and productive day on the tidal water. Lastly, I want to thank all of you for your support of the site and the magazine. It is because of you and our sponsors that WesternBass is the place where fishermen talk. Wayne
