Marty Lawrence Leads with 26-Plus At BAM Super 60 Delta Showdown

Aaron Britt Stacks 19 Scorable Bass

OAKLEY, Calif. – The Bass Boat Technologies BAM Super 60 Pro blasted off on the California Delta Friday, and by the time the scales closed, Arizona angler Marty Lawrence from Mesa, had stormed into the lead with a massive 26.39 pounds, passing Delta local Zack Thompson, from Alameda, known as the Mayor of Frank’s Tract and his five-fish limit of 23.94.

Lawrence’s Day One performance set the pace at the DirtyD in BAM’s fourth and final regular-season event, presented by the City of Oakley, Tackle Warehouse, and conservation sponsor Fisherman’s Warehouse.

“It feels good to lead any day on any tournament with these guys,” said Lawrence, reflecting on the Delta’s notorious tide swings across its 1,000 miles of waterways.

Lawrence admitted that his first encounter with the Delta’s tide drop forced him to make fast adjustments.

“I’ve never fished here before when the water was already out, so when I got down to the stuff I wanted to fish, it was all dry land, and I just had to go with it,” he said. “I started fishin’ on some deep levy banks and the fish started biting. They just happened to be big ones.”

Originally planning to flip tules, Lawrence quickly shifted gears.

“All the stuff I wanted to do was choked up with grass, so I just moved up and did some reaction stuff out in the slough, and it started working,” he explained.

That adjustment delivered—Lawrence put eight scorable bass on the board.

“I picked one off here and there,” he said. His biggest fish, a giant 8.98, struck around 10 a.m. and was only his second bite of the day.

“I caught that one on a swimbait fishin’ the grass line,” Lawrence noted. “There is a bunch of bait down there and I picked up a small swimbait to match the size of the bait and a small crankbait.”

His strategy: running lures through the troughs between the grass and the bank, and when that lane closed, working the outer grass line.

“It was windy down there and the clouds came and went,” he said of the fluctuating conditions. “It never really got bluebird until later in the day. I didn’t pay attention to it that much.”

Lawrence credited his equipment for keeping him dialed in: a Dobyns Champion XB 764 crankbait rod paired with a Johnny Morris Platinum reel and 17-pound test, plus a Dobyns 743 Champion Extreme with the same reel and 12-pound line.

“It (the lighter line) lets the bait work better than the heavier line,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Lawrence plans to stick with what’s working. Day Two will see more of the same, as he aims to connect with a few more key bites to lock down a place in Championship Sunday

Britt Brings the Volume

Arron Britt, of Yuba City, Calif. lit up Day One of the BAM Super 60, topping the field with sheer volume and consistency. Britt stacked up 19 scorable bass to pace the pack.

“I started the day just going to get bites and in fact the first three fish I got were all over three and a half pounds and it kind of got me thinking, I needed to go for weight,” Britt explained. “But I ended up going on a lull. I started catching fish about 10:00 am and they were all 14- to 15-inches so I just told myself keep going down the bank until they stopped biting. Which is what I did.”

Britt’s early quality came on a buzzbait, producing five bites in the first hour.

“I only caught two of them, but they were both good ones,” he said.

When the action slowed, Britt shifted gears, picking up a jerkbait and igniting a flurry.

“I absolutely cracked ‘em – went on a terror where I was catching a fish almost every cast. There were lots of little ones, obviously,” he added noting he landed 80 to 90 fish through the day.

Cloud cover and wind changes didn’t faze him.

“Maybe I got some more bites when the sun went away and the clouds were out and a little breeze picked up but I mean I don’t think it mattered,” Britt said. “Generally, when it’s real hot and then it gets colder, the fish get a little more grouped up on bait. In the summer they’re more spread out… As the water temperature starts to slowly fall, it bottles all the bait up and the fish will bottle up behind it; so it groups ‘em up better.

“Instead of running into one or two fish, you’re running into five or six and I think these fish are looking up right now – it’s becoming that fall time – that summer to fall transition that all these fish feed up. They look up and they were getting the bait pretty quick.”

Britt credited his main producer as a “small pointer” jerkbait fished on an IROD 702 Quercus jerkbait rod with 12-pound Seaguar Tatsu, upgraded with Owner XT36 hooks.

Looking ahead to Day Two, Britt has no plans to change what worked.

“I’m going to run that tomorrow and see how that pans out,” he said. “I am going to run a lot of the same water early but pick that jerkbait up two hours earlier than I did yesterday morning. I fished an entire slough without even throwing it (on the first day). I think all I will need to do is catch eight fish tomorrow to get in and I’m hoping to do that. But I am going to go out there and catch as many fish as possible and Sunday, if I make it, I’ve already got in my head, I am going to go the complete opposite end of the Delta and fish for five bites.”

Note: BAM Super 60 Pro Tour anglers are ranked in Pro Tour events by both the heaviest five fish limit (Weight) and numbers of scorable bass caught (Keepers).

First place is held by the angler with the five heaviest bass and second place is the highest keeper count. The standings then continue to alternate by weight/keepers.

Anglers ranked by weight on the leaderboard are denoted with an asterisk.

Anglers add to both of their Day One rankings on Day Two as an accumulated two-day total. Once both days are tallied, the field is cut to the top-10, all results are zero-ed out and the final 10 anglers fish for the five heaviest bass on Day Three to determine the champion.

Rest of the Best
