Mohave Welcomes the Wild West Bass Trail

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. – The Wild West Bass Trail (WWBT) continues the Arizona Teams circuit with a stop at Lake Mohave. On March 26, over 100 anglers will battle for bass, cash and Year-To-Date points on the reservoir that defines the border separating Nevada and Arizona.

With several days of sun and expected air temps in the mid to high 80’s, Lake Mohave is predicted to welcome the anglers to a wide-open bite.

Arizona pro Shane Moline described the lake as having three distinct sections – the North, the South and the main basin. “All three have different patterns going on right now,” he continued. “The South has a full-blown spawn, the North is more pre spawn and the main basin is kind of a pre spawn and spawn situation.”

The varied stages of spawning on the lake will allow Wild West bassers to target fish with their preferred presentation.

Moline’s thoughts on a winning strategy included hitting the spawning fish early for a limit of smallies and then upgrading throughout the day with pre spawn largemouth. “It is very difficult to get seven bites from good largemouth; so smallmouth are going to be a big factor,” he added. “Smallmouth is what you are going to use to fill your limit. The largemouth will be the kicker fish.”

He suggested Gitzits and tubes for bed bass and football jigs, darter heads and reaction baits for the largemouth.

He reported that the water clarity on the main lake was basically clear. “Historically only the coves will have a little bit of the dingier, darker water and those coves will warm up in the day,” he explained. “That is where we will usually see the shad migration; but we are not there yet.”

Moline explained the varied water temps. “It’s a flow-through lake; so as the water comes out of Hoover Dam, it runs cold,” he said. “As it spreads out to the basin, it warms up, which always makes the south-end a higher temperature than the north-end.”

In one last word of advice, Moline cautioned anglers to pay attention to the high north winds.

His prediction for a winning weight exceeded 25-lbs.

Moline has fished the lake for more than two decades. He has claimed over a dozen wins on Mohave.
