COLUMBIA, SC. – Over four days of rigorous competition on Lake St. Clair, Berkley and Abu Garcia pro Joey Cifuentes III put together $100,000 worth of smallmouth bass with a proven difference maker – Berkley PowerBait MaxScent.
On the final day, Cifuentes dropped a monster bag of 23 pounds, 13 ounces for a four-day total of 91 pounds, 8 ounces – earning him his second career Bassmaster Elite Series title in his rookie season.
"This event was unbelievable. This season my goal was to win an event and make the Bassmaster Classic,” said Cifuentes. “I feel confident in my abilities to catch and be competitive in smallmouth events, so I knew I could have a shot at Lake St. Clair. To win the event against this field of smallmouth hammers feels incredible and is a testament to the equipment and baits I’m using.”
Built directly in the Berkley Lab with real science done by real fish biologists, Berkley MaxScent is unmatched when it comes to catching bass, but when it comes to catching Smallmouth, it’s undefeated. For Cifuentes, it was the ultimate difference maker between winning and losing.
"It is unreal how good Berkley MaxScent is. It shines for Smallmouth bass but is deadly for all bass species,” said Cifuentes. “You really cannot compare the science behind MaxScent and what the team in Spirit Lake, Iowa has created. I won’t throw anything else with the confidence that I have in the MaxScent lineup.”
Utilizing a 7-foot Medium action Abu Garcia Fantasista X spinning rod paired with an Abu Garcia SX spinning reel, Cifuentes did all his damage on a 3.6-inch Berkley MaxScent Flatworm. Rigged on a Berkley Fusion19 dropshot hook, he had Smallmouth bass jumping in the boat with this setup … no, seriously, click to watch.
After Cifuentes’ second victory of the year, he is sitting in sixth place in Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings and in first place for Bassmaster Rookie of the Year standings. With only two events remaining, he’s looking to strike gold twice more.
"Going into the rest of the season, I feel pretty free,” said Cifuentes. “My goals this year were to win and qualify for the Bassmaster Classic and both those boxes are checked off. That leaves Rookie of the Year and Angler of the Year still on the table. I don’t see why I can’t accomplish both with the confidence I have rolling into the next event on Lake Champlain. I can assure you Berkley MaxScent will be getting put through the ringer once again.”
"To see what Berkley PowerBait MaxScent has done for anglers and the fish-catching power it possesses really reflects on the hard work and science that was put into it,” said Berkley’s Manager of Fish Science and Product Testing, Mark Sexton. “We have truly created a lineup of baits that through scientific methodology trigger fish into eating. On behalf of the entire team here at Berkley Labs, we are proud of Joey and congratulate him and his family on this victory.”
