Fish Chris, I can totally agree with the basic tenents you have laid out. Lets just talk fish, cause frankly I know nothing about hunting!
As a GENERAL rule of thumb, harvesting "average" fish will have little to no affect on the population as a whole and often it will be a positive. Elimination of some competion from the grand scheme of things is often beneficial, and allows more fish to reach desireable sizes for our recreational fisheries.
"Average" is the word that can cause problems.
"Average" Delta bass ~2-3 lbs.
Average Shasta bass probly ~1 lb.
The descision needs to be made specifically on the body of water.
Smallmouth is real good eatin. Rarely that I do kill a bass (Heretic!!!) but I would keep a fish that is probly less than 2 lbs if the fish "average" about 2 lbs.
Also "selective" is the other important word. Take enough fish to feed yourself and another for the evening, maybe more if you don't fish all that often. Rarely does any of us see another angler leave with fish on a stringer and even more rare is an angler leaving with a limit of good sized fish. I think that is more so bred from the convention of catch and release, but I would like to see that really come from educated harvest practices, not just a 30 year old tradition.
I know there are alot of us that catch other fish for food as well, yet that same restraint of "selective harvest" is much less common when out fishing specifically to fill the freezer. Not to pick on any salmon anglers, but its too good of an example...Do you really need your two 35lb salmon, or could you do with a couple 20 lbers? I think it is practices like that which are ultimately the best action for preserving fish and fisheries.
Just my 2, but I hope at least a few folks agree with me!

BassManDan, Your example of salmon may not be the best, if I am not mistaken, Pacific salmon die after they spawn, so we would lose that fish anyway out of the group..Now that being said, does a 35 pounder deposit more eggs than say a 20 pounder or if it were male would it fertilize more eggs prior to expiring..
According to the research I have done in the case of LMB, the larger older female bass do not lay as many eggs as a smaller female..Once they have reached 10 pounds or so, chances are they have already deposited more eggs than they will if they live another 10 years..Does this mean we should keep those that exceed 10 pounds over those that have yet reached their peak production years..I think not, as Chris has pointed out, by releasing them we give someone else the opportunity to catch that same fish again..This would not be the case with salmon, or rather Pacific salmon..
I definitely agree with you on your ideas about selective harvest for those that desire to do so..I do know that when I choose to keep a few for eating, I prefer those in the 1 1/2 to 2 pound category..Much nicer filets and much better tasting..It has been several years since I have had the urge to keep any though..As sportmen/women it is to our overall benefit to use the resource wisely..

IF the CA DFG were fully staffed and funded as any normal branch of Govt. Police Enforcement Agency..... along the the Courts - to fully prosecute the offenders to the fullest extent of the law..... There would be ALOT more F&G as well.

Fish and Game wardens have arrested four individuals on felony charges of illegally taking and selling sport fish in the Delta.
"Illegal take and sale of this valuable resource jeopardizes conservation efforts by the department and our partners," said DFG Patrol Chief Nancy Foley.
In the arrest sweep last week, wardens said they seized a 14-foot aluminum fishing boat, 36 bags of bluegill, each bag containing about 20 fish (more than 700 bluegill total), along with commercial quantities of individually packaged striped bass with weights marked on each package, and two scales used to weigh fish.
"This is another example of the Department of Fish and Game's ongoing effort to protect California's sport fish from illegal commercialization and poaching," said DFG Capt. Brian Naslund. During the past year, he said that the DFG has arrested other groups for the illegal commercialization of striped bass and sturgeon taken from the Delta.
According to the DFG, charged and arrested were: Tam Thi Dang, 46, of Sacramento; Dong Van Le, 48, of Sacramento; Thiet Van Nguyen, 50, of Stockton; and Nguyen Doan Thi Hui, 50, of Stockton. They face fines of up to $10,000 and up to one year in state prison or county jail.

This is on the Courts side of enforcing the law .... And they are fully funded........ It is the jail space that is lacking there ~!!
