DIY-What to do this Winter – Organize Hooks and Weights

I have been looking for workable system to keep my hooks and weights plus other little items in a dry and organized but easily assessable. I pick up the idea from a Pro name Todd Woods.

I use containers that I can see through where I can see what I’m looking for. I mark the outside of the container in two different ways. This first way is with label embossing tape that I pick up at Wal-Mart for less then $5 bucks. I use different color tapes as a code to make locating what I’m looking for easer. I also tear off the label from the package and put it in side the container where I can see what it is. The containers are about good for everything I use except the bigger items such as 5/0 hook are bigger. There I use sealable (zip-lock) plastic bags. I use color eclectic tape to mark the outside of the bag with the item inside.

The only bad thing with this system is that the containers cost a dollar each. I get them at The Container Store (containerstore.com).

Here is the completed set up – I chose to go with a smaller plastic storage box with adjustable dividers two lock hinges. I have one set up for the Delta and Clear Lake and one for Lakes (not shown). Plus it fits in my tackle bag when I’m on someone’s else boat.

I also have a bigger storage box with bottles (med containers) I use when I buy bulk and keep them until I need plus some of the smaller containers that I’m not using.

Here is Todd setup – it is bigger and more for lakes but he keep his in the boat and has a hard time moving to the back seat!

Got a little time on your hands, don't ya Marty :P

Very organized, but I don't understand the hassle of opening an box and then unscrewing a jar to get your hooks :?

Plano makes the shallow boxes with the zillions of divider slots, works great, you can make the compartment the exact size for hooks and weights and its shallow, so I don't have to try to get my sausage fingers way down into the box to grab a hook :lol:

I would pay to have someone organize my junk like that.

That is very organized and easy to see. Ho do you store your larger hooks..... 4's & 5's?

I went 'lo-end'...{LOL}

I got some of the plain thin metal shower-curtain rings, and thread my hook bags right onto it, rigging them onto the holes in the bags they were pegged on in the store. The hooks stay in the original bags they came in, and size and brand ios easily identifiable.
Weights I keep in an adjustable plano box.

Sorry, no pictures, but it works out easy, and quick.

I have three rings...one for EWG hooks, one for octopus style hooks, and one for others, such as round bends, straight-shank flipping hooks, etc...
All hooks are put onto the respective ring in size order...ie: size 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0, 7/0
Flip until you find the size you need.
If I am fishing alot with one certain size that day,like a 4/0 EWG as an example, I'll take that bag of 4/0 off the ring, and have it in my chest pocket for quick re-hooking when necessary, so you do not have to go digging again.

Quick use on the water, easy to arrange, and CHEAP.



All those jars would drive me crazy, but that's just me. {LOL}

Zip Lock bags , which the company whose hooks I use, are packaged in, stay dry, too.
Then I put the whole ring of hooksmin the zip-lock bags into a gallon sized zip-lock bag.
Everything stays dry that way too
