Re: Landing fish without a net
Touching the line is fair and square and takes nothing away from the accomplishment of catching big bass. However, I wouldnt touch the line unless I absolutely had to. And when I do touch the line I do at at very specific times keeping in mind that I may have to let go at any second. As long as its ...

Re: Why not M/K power drive's on bass boats
Power drives are just about the only trolling motor Ive used for the last 18 years. The primary reason I use this motor is because I have a small boat and I need as much space as possible up front. The power drives have a very small base and a small flat pedal (the other engine in this category is t...

Hey Johny, the tooth patch absolutely is not 100% diagnostic for spotted bass. Do a google search on the subject and you will find the answer. IMHO, no question its a spot. Characteristics that you never hear people talk about, which this fish has, is the body shape, the size of the head in proportion to the body, and the length of the caudal peduncle. Also, look at what appears to be a large "spot" just fore of the tail. Not cer...

For years I went through every line I could find trying to achieve maximum depth while deep cranking, mostly with DD 22's. Look at line diameter, you want to minimize the diameter to achieve maximum depth. However, there is a fine line between maximizing depth and losing all your crankbaits/hooked f...

I am certainly not a swimbait expert, but a bow in the line allows the bass to inhale the bait and actually move it toward them without any resistance, thus getting it deeper in their mouth. Not sure, just my theory. That theory makes sense, but with a bow in your line you are risking not detecting...

Its a fine line between not killing fish but maximizing the bite to fish landed ratio. I adjust my stingers according to the bite; during certain times of the year they suck it in, and during others they just sorta nip at it. I try real hard not to use stingers, but sometimes you just have to. I act...

Interesting you should ask that. Without a doubt, no boat movement is best when hucking swimbaits, at least for me and the way I fish. I usually have two anchors, and on those spots I KNOW hold big fish, I will throw those anchors out. The problem with boat movement is twofold. First, it causes me t...

Selective harvest is key, smaller bass are excellent table fare. My rule of thumb is i will not eat any fish coming out of a lake located on flat ground (i.e., Central Valley; Berryessa and Clear Lake included). I will only eat fish out of lakes at higher elevations (the higher the better), even tho...

You should always discuss cost sharing prior to fishing regardless of why you are fishing. Sometimes thats not the way it works, and the cost sharing discussion takes place at the end of the day. The mouth is on a very strong hinge. You tie the line to the jaw such that when working the bait you can get the mouth to open and shut. Its pretty cool because even at a distance you can see the pink of the mouth as the jaw opens and closes. And while dead sticking you can open and close the mouth....
