New Recreational/Commercial Shark Fishing Requirements for 2018
NOAA Fisheries reminds Highly Migratory Species (HMS) vessels that the remaining new recreational and commercial measures implementing Amendment 5b to the 2006 Consolidated Atlantic HMS Fishery Management Plan (FMP) become effective January 1, 2018. Amendment 5b implemented a range of management measures to end overfishing and rebuild overfished dusky sharks. Other measures for Amendment 5b became effective June 5, 2017. CDFW announced 15-day delay for the northern California commercial Dungeness crab season.
The Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has announced a final 15-day delay for the northern California commercial Dungeness crab season. Crab condition improved from the last round of pre-season quality testing conducted on Dec. 19. However, crab had not reached the minimum meat recovery criteria as established by the Tri-State Dungeness Crab Committee testing protocol.

Commercial Spiny Lobster Fishery Closure has been Lifted
Today the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Director Charlton H. Bonham lifted a portion of the commercial fishery closure around Anacapa Island east of 119°30.000’ W. longitude and north of 34°00.000’ N. latitude as recommended by state health agencies. According to the notice from the Director of the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessments (OEHHA), sampling of spiny lobster and analysis of samples by California Department of Public Health (CDPH) laboratories indicates that consumption of spiny lobster taken from this area no longer poses a significant threat for domoic acid exposure.

The last remaining area of the California coast will open to commercial Dungeness crab fishing. The area was previously closed due to elevated levels of domoic acid. The last closed area between Ten Mile River and Shelter Cove is scheduled to open on Jan. 16.
