New Estimate Shows Healthy Mille Lacs Smallmouth Population
Since the late 1990s, Mille Lacs Lake has become an increasingly popular destination for anglers who want to catch trophy-sized smallmouth bass. Until now, it wasn’t known how many of these fish – prized more for their fight than their fillets – called the lake home. A population estimate completed in 2018 shows there are some 67,000 smallmouth bass in the 128,000-acre lake.

2017 AOY Championship for Bassmaster Elite Series At Mille Lacs
The nation’s top bass anglers will compete for more than $1 million in payouts and berths in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods during the 2017 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship, Sept. 14-17, on Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota. Bassmaster Elite Series pro Brandon Palaniuk is currently leading the race with 811 points.

The Mille Lacs Smallmouth Alliance (MLSA) has received a significant donation from Frabill, makers of trusted fishing gear since 1938. MSLA will use the gift of 10 Frabill Weigh-Bag Systems and 10 Conservation Series Landing Nets to minimize mortality of trophy smallmouth bass on Mille Lacs. It all fits perfectly with the organization's goal to preserve and maintain the trophy smallmouth bass in the nation's top bass lake, as recently designated by Bassmaster magazine.
