    Rescued Steelhead Released into Feather River | CDFW Stocking Half -Million

    Hatchery trucks from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) today began the weeklong process of stocking a half million young steelhead smolts on the Feather River near Yuba City. The 125,000 fish released Monday were the first of the fish reared from eggs rescued from the Feather River Fish Hatchery during last year’s Feather River spillway failure. Plants will continue through Thursday near Yuba City.

    The beginning of trout fishing season in Southern California is just around the corner, and  biologists and hatchery staff are striving to maximize hatchery trout availability for the many anglers who will cast lines in coming weeks. Trout angling in lower-elevation waters of Southern California generally begins in November and continues through April, to correspond with colder water temperatures that can sustain stocked trout.

Average-size trout are 10-13 inches in length and .75 pounds per fish. The incentive fish are typically more than 13 inches in length and average around one pound.

    Trout Stocking Program

    Catchable rainbow and brown trout were released today at Malabar Farm in Lucas as part of a pilot project to evaluate both species' suitability for future stockings in the area, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The Inn Pond across from Malabar Farm Restaurant received 300 rainbow trout, and Switzer Creek on Malabar Farm State Park property received 400 brown trout. Both locations are spring fed, and biologists believe the water may be sufficiently cool to support year-round trout fishing opportunities. Stockings will continue in these locations if the trout find the area suitable for continued success.

Each year the Arizona Game and Department stocks catfish at least 11 times per year in core waters, and three times per year in "expansion waters."     JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) recently stocked Florida-strain largemouth bass into the Ross Barnett Reservoir. In cooperation with Pearl River Valley Water Supply District and local bass anglers, the fish were transported and released into vegetated backwater areas to improve survival rates.
