Man Sentenced to 20-Years in Prison for Attempting to Shoot a Wildlife Officer
A Humboldt County man who attempted to shoot a California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CFDW) wildlife officer has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.Shawn Eugene Hof, Jr., 25, was convicted in Humboldt County Superior Court of assault with a firearm upon a peace officer with an enhancement of personally using a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm, using threats and violence upon an executive officer, negligently discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, and one misdemeanor violation of “spotlighting” (using artificial light to poach wildlife).

Guided Wildlife Tours at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, 3207 Rutherford Road, Gridley (95948), 12:30 p.m. The 90-minute walking tour covers slightly more than a half-mile through this premier birding spot that highlights migratory waterfowl and other wetland wildlife. Tours are cancelled in the event of heavy rain. No reservations are necessary for groups of fewer than 20 people. Wildlife Conservation Board Funds Environmental Improvement and Acquisition Projects CDFW
At its Nov. 30 quarterly meeting, the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) approved approximately $2.6 million in grants to help restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat throughout California. Some of the 12 approved projects will benefit fish and wildlife—including some endangered species—while others will provide public access to important natural resources. Several projects will also demonstrate the importance of protecting working landscapes that integrate economic, social and environmental stewardship practices beneficial to the environment, landowners and the local community. The state funds for all these projects come from bond measures approved by voters to help preserve and protect California’s natural resources. Funded projects include:

CDFW’s Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area serves two critical – but sometimes competing – needs. The 16,670 acres of riparian and agricultural habitat in Yolo County provide a refuge and an all-you-can-eat buffet for migratory waterfowl and resident wildlife to the west of Sacramento and the increasingly urbanized surrounding communities.

The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies applauds Deputy Secretary Bernhardt's announcement about allocating much needed funding to state wildlife agencies and Native American and Alaskan tribes through the State Wildlife Grants (SWG) program and the Tribal Wildlife Grant (TWG) program. Sportfishing Industry Praises Committee Passage of HELP for Wildlife Act
The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) today expressed support for the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works’ (EPW) passage of S. 1514, the Hunting Heritage and Environmental Legacy Preservation Act, or HELP for Wildlife Act. The bipartisan bill, which includes a range of provisions designed to improve the management of fish, wildlife, habitat, and outdoor recreation, passed by a 14-7 margin.

Various Days — Bat Talk and Walk at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, various times, 45211 County Road 32B (Chiles Road), Davis (95618). Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area is home to approximately 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats. From mid-June to mid-September the Yolo Basin Foundation provides a program for people to learn about bats and watch the colony fly. Reservations are required. All CDFW facilities from Sacramento north, except for Chico Office, are closed, including the Feather River Hatchery, Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, Upper Butte Wildlife Area, and all Wildlife Areas along the Sacramento River below the Confluence of the Feather River and Sacramento River and should not be attempted to visit.
