The Rapala VMC family is big and includes many iconic fishing tackle brand names. Their products work well for all species, but for bass anglers Rapala, Terminator, Sufix, Storm, and VMC are some of the best names in bass fishing. At ICAST 2022, each of them released new products that expanded their list of great products.
Rapala OG Rocco 5
The Rapala OG (Ott’s Garage) lineup of crankbaits have been a huge success. Each year, Rapala and Ott have unveiled a new crankbait designed after some of the most popular handmade balsa baits that Ott has used for years. His incredible bait insight and Rapala’s manufacturing have brought this custom crankbait feel to the masses.
New this year is the Rocco 5, a balsa squarebill. It’s a big profiled bait that is designed to be fished quickly, with a great deflecting action. It will be available in 15 colors to start and many of them are already proven Rapala hues. When fished on 12 or 14-pound test line, you can expect it to hit depths of 5 feet. It’s a 3/8-ounce bait that is 2-½ inches and will retail for $10.49.
Sufix ProMix Lime Green Braided Line
When it comes to fishing line, Sufix has many loyal fans of their braid, monofilament, and fluorocarbon. New for this year is the ProMix braid, which is now available in a high-vis lime green color, which helps anglers detect light bites.
They use a color injection process that is said to increase the color life by two times, ensuring that the bright green color stays on the line for much longer. ProMix is a strong, thin, and quality braid but retails for just $12.99 a spool.
New Size in the Storm Largo Shad Swimbait
This swimbait has been out for several years, but there is now a new size option. The bait was originally designed as a saltwater bait, but Jacob Wheeler used it to score some big wins and now they have plenty of great freshwater color options.
The new size coming out is a 3.5-inch bait, a midsize between the 3 and 4-inch baits that were already out. What makes this bait so good is that is very durable, but has a great kicking action you are used to from other baits. They have a nice body roll and shimmy as the bait comes through the water. Retail price will be $5.49 for a pack of six baits.
Rapala Jigging Shadow Rap
The Jigging Rap or “ice jig” has been a bass catching secret for bass anglers on the west coast for years, but it has caught on across the country now. While they are designed for ice fishing or fishing for walleye, anyone who has used them for bass in deep water knows they are excellent baits.
This year, Rapala added a new version the Jigging Shadow Rap. It’s a different look and weighs less, allowing the bait to glide slower when fished. It has a much slower fall and the No. 9 Shadow Rap version is the same size profile as the original No. 9, but weighs as much as the No. 7 of the original. They also feature realistic finishes for popular baitfish like perch and smelt as well as the classic silver color, a silver metallic with black back. Retail price of the new baits is $11.49.
New Terminator Frogs
Terminator is another iconic brand under the Rapala VMC lineup and although they make jigs and spinnerbaits, their frogs are also excellent. New for this year are five new color options for their popping and walking frogs. The colors are: Watermelon, Carolina Pumpkin, Sunny, Retro Gill, and Pumpkin Seed. Retai price for them is $10.99.
The team at Rapala VMC has been busy with plenty of new products for anglers who target many different species. The above new products were designed with bass in mind and add even more to the impressive list of great products that are produced by the famed company.
VMC Tokyo Rig 5-inch Drop-Wire
The Tokyo Rig has become a staple rig for many bass anglers and the team at VMC just released another version of it. Instead of the standard wire, the new 5-inch version is twice as long. It was developed for anglers who wanted their bait a little higher off of the bottom and will greatly help those fishing soft and silted bottoms, where the previous version would sink too far into the bottom.
The new version features a heavy-duty wide gap XLS model VMC hook and anglers can select the right size hook for their favorite soft bait and use whatever size tungsten weight they prefer. Retail cost for a pack of two is $4.99.
