    Fishing guide found guilty for crimes related to his paid angling endeavors

    In 2016, Swann, proprietor of Swanny’s Guided Fishing, pleaded guilty to one count of violating the endangered species act, and was fined $7,500. That guilty plea came after Swann was accused of illegally harvesting two wild coho salmon on the Cowlitz River while he was out on a paid guide trip. After video and photos of the fish in question surfaced on the internet, Swann was accused of cutting off the adipose fins of the fish in order to make them appear as if they were clipped hatchery stock, which is legal for harvest.

    Grant Funding Available for Angling Programs Geared to Hispanic Communities

    Latinos are California’s largest ethnic population, with almost 15 million people of Hispanic heritage. Yet only a fraction of California’s nearly 1.8 million anglers are Hispanic, and according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service study, Hispanic participation in fishing and angling activities has remained stagnant even as overall participation has increased nationwide. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) are looking for new ways to educate and engage Hispanic communities in the sport of fishing, and this year, grants will be made available for programs, classes and activities that support this cause.

    High water temperatures in the lower Merced River have prompted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to close a portion of the river to angling earlier than usual. This early closure begins today, Aug. 18, and affects only the Merced River from Crocker-Huffman Dam downstream to the Snelling Road Bridge, a distance of approximately 5.5 miles.
