I don't have a wild fear for them, and they are a vital part of the big picture! Think about how many flies, mosquitoes, and gnats would be driving you NUTS on your favorite body of water without them! And the mosquito is the MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL ON THE PLANET! Bar none, it kills more people (Malar...

Recluse not here
I started a huge thread, about brown spiders. They are not here, an entomoligist (Bug genious) came on and said they are not in this part of Ca. I almost spelled "enemologist"! :D It is common to confuse a common brown spider with a dangerous one. I think they have a white fiddle on the ba...

Rich and Cooch really hit the nail on the head. Reading what Rich wrote was weird, it was like our psychic link was activated again. Sometimes, the fish have off days and don't hit round targets well. I don't know what it is, or why. Another idea to try on those days, vs. a follow up bait is just fi...

You said "other critters" and I have to tell you this one. I got my hands on some Berkley Tournament Strength baits, where they changed the recipe around to go with the new plastic that had clear type colors. And I REALLY like the original formula, but I had to give the new one a shot. It ...

Another idea
Had something happen like that before. Fishing a flip jig dragged on the mud bottom. Lots of bites, and misses. Tried to let them eat the bait, didn't work either. Decided to slowly reel back, super slow on the the next bite. I could feel something on there, and as the jig came closer to the surface...

I don't think the fish were striking out of scent and then not liking the taste and spitting. I don't think the fish hit so much on scent vs. action, or the way the baits move. Color might be third, bait retention can be related to texture or flavor. Fish strike lures based on attractive qualities, ...

Coolest one was this, the main hook only offered so many chances at hooking up. Adding a trailer hook, increased hookups, but gained more weeds, and changed the balance of the bait. I would Buzz, Crank/blade, and swing a big jig.
Three hours is short time, I would try to cover as much water as possible. Those baits will give you a better fish. I would hang a great big Kalin Mogombo grub on the jig, or something like it.
GOOD LUCK!
