    Water Temp: closer to right

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Greetings from Cottage Grove Lake. Fished the rip rap between the dam and the big ramp this morning. I tossed a black/blue double colorado spinnerbait with a black/blue flake chunk trailer and of course the jig/beaver combo. It was cold enough to freeze up the guides again- said 30 degrees when I got to the lake. I tossed the spinnerbait around some shoreline wood- a few big logs with a bunch of debris washed up against it- with no bites. I started tossing the jig way out to see if I could find any staging fish. Nothing doing. As I was slowly hopping the jig along I noticed some surface activity off to my right near one of the bigger logs. I tossed the jig out in the area and kept it hopping pretty aggresively so it wouldn't get stuck in the rocks and to try to get a reaction strike. Three feet from shore a nice looking bass came out from the log and chased the jig. Two casts later she came out and ate it. This fish was full of energy and wouldn't stop flopping around- despite the 30 degree air. She was 3 lbs, 4 oz. and 19" long. Got her weighed and measured as fast as possible and back in the water. The roof of her mouth was all red- probably from chasing crawdads down in the riprap.
So I guess that means I finally got a five fish limit- only took 5 weeks! Let's see- 3.7oz.,4.8oz.,2.13oz.,2.10oz., and 3.4oz= 16 lbs, 10oz.. By no means tearin' it up but I will take it for a pretty cold month of March.
One of my old fishing friends from California called yesterday and said he got 18.2 pounds in 7 fish (In 75 minutes) from one of the ponds we used to fish there. I said "Was it 30 degrees while you were fishing"? He replied "Nope, I wore shorts and fished from noon to 1:15PM"! Caught 'em all on watermelon/red flake senkos. You think I'm stuck on my jig beaver combo- that's all he tosses. But hey- go with what works.
    City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: I'm hoping to have the fishfinder installed in the old kayak by the weekend so I can hit a few areas I can't reach from shore. I also like to try different angles and the kayak works great for that. Maybe I'll actually have a multiple fish day or possibly even catch a limit so I can call my pal in California and give him some crap!
I'm for sure gonna try to get a rattle trap/ crankbait bite going. Love tossing those squarebills up around shallow wood. And even though I havn't had much success with it so far I've got to keep tossing the spinnerbaits. A nice older gentleman told me about his best day ever at Cottage Grove. He and his wife caught and released 18 bass over 5 lbs. one windy afternoon..... tossing spinnerbaits. Even 10 or 11 5 pounders and I'm a happy man!! See you out there.

    Water Temp: 51

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Fished in a two day tourney, braved the snow, sleet and 30 mph wind gusts, but fishing was good. Found the males in 2-6 ft depths and females 10+ depth. Jig-n-pig worked good also rattle traps for deeper. Pitch to the brush with the jig and off the points with the traps.

    Water Temp: gettin' there

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: This report is for Cottage Grove Lake. I fished Monday and Tuesday mornings. Monday I got no bites but Tuesday was interesting! After having to de-ice my car before leaving the house you'd think I might look at the temp gauge in the car to see how cold it was. But..I didn't. I got to my spot, put on my boots and extra clothes and headed down the bank to my starting point for the day. I had at least an hour to kill so I was trying to figure out how much water to cover. As I got to the bank I looked out to my right while walking and almost walked on 2 guys in mummy bags lying on a tarp. I'm almost positive they we're more startled than I was! I just held up my rod and said "Just fishing" and walked right on by. I didn't know if they were homeless or what but it was odd. Once I got down to the water I almost bust out laughing- there was a drift boat with an outboard tied up to a rock with a handfull of bass rods hanging out the back! Those psychos in sleeping bags (And freezing their butts off!!) were a couple of kids on spring break doing what any hardcore bassers would like to do- eat,sleep,FISH....and frrrreeeze. Anyway I hiked and fished about a 1/8 mile stretch and finally got a 2 lb., 10 ounce bass on the same lure I've got all my bass on this year- a jig and beaver. I made a cast and had to put the rod butt on the ground while I tried to clean out the really iced up guides on my spinning rod. Took about 45 seconds and when I lifted the rod and tightened the line the fish was on. I got it from a spot that looks like it would be loaded this time of year. Very deep water real close to shore and near a known spawning area. This fish was the hardest pulling 2.10 I've ever hooked. I was already congratulating myself for gettin' a 5 plus before April 1st! When I saw it I was kinda let down. I didn't bother with a photo 'cause it was sooo cold out. At 8:15 when I got back in the car it was still 32 degrees- it was probably 29 or 30 when I got there. Yes- the heater felt great!
    City: yoncalla.or

Tips: I used a 10" worm in a brownish color with red flake. I texas rigged it with a 3/8 ounce brown sinker and a red bead. I thought sure I'd get bit on this. I even trimmed off the grub style tail so it wouldn't have too much action. I'm gonna try a Tequila Sunrise 10" Powerbait worm and see if the scent and/or tail helps. And I may toss that brown jig a bit too! I'm taking a Rogue with me also 'cause it seems to me the last 2 fish were suspended out in deeper water and you can rip it down and stop it for a bit- hopefully long enough for that elusive 6.....okay 5 plus to eat it! See ya out there! Oh yeah, one last tip- big, fat, thick, warm......SOCKS!

    Water Temp: fairly warm

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Just got back from Cottage Grove. Got me a decent Easter bass. It was 17 1/2" and 2 lbs.,13 oz. and of course came on what else? A jig and beaver! It came from a small bay along the west shore. There was a branch sticking up so I tossed across it and when it got to the branch I hit it then let it drop. Then my line took off sideways. She fought really hard and once I went to get the jig out I could see why. She only had one good eye- the other was all milky and glazed over. Great- the only bass in the lake that would hit my lure and she's half blind. Hardly seems fair but I'll take it. Like all the other one eyed bass I've released (three or four others) she went sharp right and darn near beached herself. Got a picture of her "good" side. Water looks great and I can't wait to get the boat out. It sprinkled about 1/2 the time today and actually rained hard for about 2 minutes.
    City: yoncalla

Tips: I tried a dark green/silver blade chatterbait and a reddish/orange rattle trap. There's a reason I love that jig and beaver combo. Get out when you can- it should start picking up from here on out!

    Water Temp: gettin' close n

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: The water has come quite a ways up over the last week with all the rain we got. I stopped by Cottage Grove Lake on Saturday morning and there was a 8 or 9 boat club tourney just dropping their boats in the drink. I kinda miss doing those. I only had 25 minutes to fish so I didn't go ask what club they were- would have liked to check the results and see how they all did. Made about a dozen casts with my jig and then hit the road for work. No bites but who cares- great way to start the day. Was going to take the kayak out Sunday but the weather report doesn't look too good so I'll do my shore milk run instead. I'd be happy to get a couple of good bites- that is if the tourney guys didn't "sore lip" all the good ones!!
    City: yoncalla

Tips: I'll post again real soon and let you know if my lure choices (I'm actually gonna toss something besides my trusty pig and whatever) and locations worked or not. Ed and Rod- get out and go man! It's time to catch some oinkers!!!

    Water Temp: n/a

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: Hey Bassinbob..... Been reading your reports for Cottage Grove res and was wondering if you might like to fish it with me sometime this spring... I live down near Grants Pass and have only fished C.G. once... Went way down to where the channels through the weeds are and fished hard all morning with now bites at all... Came back to the dock and saw a little kid with a Wally World pole and a stringer of about nine bass that looked like they might have gone a couple of pounds apiece... So much for the big fishin' guy... I have a Stratos boat and would be happy to take you out just to get an idea of where the big 'uns are hiding.... If you are interested give me a shout at my email address and I will try to find enough change in my piggy bank to cover the gasoline... My bass club fished Dorena twice this year, and it was great if you like sleet, snow, wind and rain all at the same time... I didn't quite make it through the first day, and then it got really nasty the next day..... Give me a shout.... Rod.....

    Water Temp: still pretty co

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Fished Cottage Grove every morning on my way to work for 20-45 minutes each day. Nothing on Monday or Tuesday but Wednesday I got a real nice bass on the old jig and beaver combo. Got it on the first cast from the same spot I got a 3.7 out of a couple weeks ago. This one was about 20" also but the scale read 4 lbs., 8 ounces. The air temp was 31 degrees just like the previous fish. My wife let me use a spare digital camera but I couldn't get it to shoot a shot- turns out you have to actually charge the darn battery every once in a while! That makes no pictures of my 4 biggest fish from that lake- a 5.10, a 5.4, a 4.8, and a 4.6. Someday I'll have a camera surgically attached so I never miss a shot. Fish jigs slow PERIOD. And dress warm! See ya out there.

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Went to Cottage Grove Lake today. About 30 degrees when I left the house. Fished from 7-9 AM. Tried a shallow crank and a spinnerbait for the first hour with no bites. Tied on a jig and 10 minutes later got a 20" 3 pound, 7 ounce largemouth. She bit it pretty good- I was able to feel it even with frozen hands. Measured, weighed and shot 3 or 4 real fast pictures of her including two of the release. Checked my line and cast back out to roughly the same spot. It felt like my line was dragging on a guide so I checked and for the first time ever all the guides on my rod were crusted up with ice! On a spinning rod no less. Cleared 'em off and kept on casting but no more takers. Overcast and foggy and darn cold. The water has come up a bit since the last time I was there (Feb. 19th). If they keep it rising and we get our usual rain it should be looking good about May 1st or so.
    City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: Dress warm, wear something on your hands, fish crawfish type lures slowly, take at least mental photos of the better looking areas that will be under water by next month or do like I do and draw in a notebook and take real photos of the best areas. I've got half a dozen spots I know will have good bass on them come early spring. And most importantly believe that you'll get a bite- a positive attitude is THE most important thing to bring along on a 30 degree morning!

Report: Hello and welcome to the Bassin' Bob home page. Who needs your own website when you can have this one all to yourself. Of course the weather can keep a lot of fellow bassers at home this time of year so I wouldn't expect it to be lit up with posts every day but soon it'll be springtime again and if that doesn't make your blood boil maybe you should be watching the "knitting channel" or take up ice carving. Here's a fun way to teach your young ones to handle a fishing rod. Buy, borrow or adopt a small dog- poodles work fine- and get a 2 foot cartoon rod from Wallymart. Help your kid learn to cast it- can't start flippin' too soon- and watch their eyes light up when the dog nails the casting plug that comes with the rod and takes off down the hall. They'll learn how to set the drag, keep the rod loaded and what it feels like to get sawed off. All I do is open the closet where we keep the rods and both kids are instantly jacked up. You may want to try a 20 lb. leader just so you don't have to keep retying-poodles have teeth like a darn walleye! Hope this keeps your spirits up until we can all get out there and catch some more (And bigger) bass. Happy New Year to all.

    Water Temp: 55-58??

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Went to Cottage Grove in the kayak today. Fished along the dam area and the wall but couldn't get a bite. Used a pig and jig and a Lucky Craft Pointer 100. I made a long cast across the mouth of Shortridge Cove and gave the lure a few sharp rips and then sat the rod in my lap to fiddle with some gear. When I picked up the rod and tightened up on the line I could feel it bumping something- the bottom or more likely one of the many stumps out there- so I paused and then pulled. Then the rod doubled up and it was fish on! I got taken for a pretty decent ride. The whole time I'm saying out loud actually "Be a BASS, be a BASS!" A minute later it came up to where I could see it and it was a bass. I lipped her, got my pliers, got the hooks out and reached for the camera....which was still in the van at the ramp! Dam I hate when that happens. It was 5 pounds, 10 ounces, 20 inches long and 17 1/2 in girth. Beautiful with no marks on her and a big chubby belly! It's my biggest Oregon bass so far. She was very calm like a lot of the nicer sized ones seem to be once you land them. I let her go in about a foot and a half of water and in her haste to get away from the kayak she promply beached herself. I was able to coax her to deeper water with a gentle prod or two with the paddle. Then I let out a primal type scream partly from the joy of catching a good fish and partly from forgetting the camera. One bite, one fish and one great memory from my favorite Oregon lake. Weather was a bit windy- just a bit and overcast also.
    City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: Fish slower and slower as it gets cooler and cooler. I like lures like pig and jigs, big worms without long wiggly tails, deeper jerkbaits and of course 5-8" swimbaits in trout patterns. You can't really go wrong for the better fish with these lures. Oh yeah- don't forget the big spinnerbaits come early spring.

Report: Took my brother in law from Minnesota out to see if we could catch a few largies. Since he's on vacation I couldn't get him out until 7AM. Got to the lake and started fishing at about 8AM. We had on t-shirts for the first 3 1/2 hours and then rainsuits for the next 3. We started in an area that usually produces a few. He got a nice 16" 2lb,3oz. on a jig and grub. Then a while later he got a 7" bass on a bobber and chunk of crawler. We moved over to the stick up tree and I finally got one- a 17 1/2" 3lb,2oz. on a jig and chunk. And then it started sprinkling and the fish really turned on. It wasn't one of those crazy bite every cast deals but what was amazing was the quality of the fish. Almost all of the fish we got once it started raining were over 2 lbs.. And they were nailing our jigs. I tried a few other lures- spook, chatterbait and crankbaits because of all the surface activity but all they wanted were the jigs. All but one of the fish were fat and very good fighters. After a while the bite did die off a bit- 2 hours of steady rain and we kind of lost our enthusiasm too! We had the whole lake to ourselves- even the shore fishermen packed up and left. It makes sense that the fish would go wacky and be swimming around with their backs out of the water when none of us evil fishermen are around. well almost none of us!
    City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: When the weatherman says 30% chance of showers....head for the lake and hope it does rain. And don't forget your box of jigs and trailers! Or your rainsuit. Or "your" brother in law from wherever.

    Water Temp: warm

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: This report is for Cottage Grove. Fished from 5:30-11:00AM. Overcast the whole time and a full moon. If you need a dock to launch then this lake is done for the year. I had to tie my boat sideways to the end of the dock and only had 2-3' of water under it. If someone else goes along you can just dump it in but you still have to hop in the boat somehow after you park the trailer. Guess that's why I bought a kayak!!
I had a good day. The bass are finally eating my pig and jig again. It has been real slow up until now at least for me. All the bass I got were in or very near a creek channel. I'm gonna miss that fishfinder when I'm in the kayak. And the bass seemed a little scattered out. I got 2 pound and a half clones in one area, a 2 1/2 off that tree down by the creek, and another 2 1/2 at the junction of a small creek and a steep grassy shoreline. It looks like they dredged out a little channel so the ski boat guys can get to their boats from the east shore campgrounds. I missed as many bites as I hooked but still had a fun day. The fish in this lake put up great fights for their size- but I still miss the smallmouths we used to catch in California. One of these days I'll quit being lazy and go try the Umpqua or one of the lakes with SM in it.
    City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: Brown and black pig and jig with brown Zoom chunk trailer- the bass love 'em. Watch your line and don't ask yourself- "Was that a bite?"
SET THE DARN HOOK!!!!!!! Then let them go so somebody else can catch 'em!
Cloudy and or overcast days as close to a full moon as possible work for me. Keep a logbook- you'll be surprised at how consistent it can be from year to year. Bass really are creatures of habit!

Report: My 4 fear old girl got her first bass from a pond in California while we were on vacation. She got a 14" largemouth on a 4.5" brown drop shot worm at 2:30 PM. She was pretty jacked up and I was sure proud of her. Thank God one of our friends fishing with us had his camera with him and took 6 pictures. His 9 year old daughter
scored her first bass also on a dropshot red worm. I got my first Chatterbait fish at the same pond earlier in the week- looked like a clone of hers!

Report: Fished for 2 hours, afternoon. Windy, but warm. Found 3 fish between 3:30pm and 4:00pm under cover in shallows. Two less than 1-pound each, one 17.5" nearly 5 pound largemouth all caught on bright spinnerbaits in less than 3 feet of shaded water.

Tips: Bass aren't seeming too aggressive. Would love to fish this weekend if water temperature is above 55 degrees.
