Report: Hello and welcome to the Bassin' Bob home page. Who needs your own website when you can have this one all to yourself. Of course the weather can keep a lot of fellow bassers at home this time of year so I wouldn't expect it to be lit up with posts every day but soon it'll be springtime again and if that doesn't make your blood boil maybe you should be watching the "knitting channel" or take up ice carving. Here's a fun way to teach your young ones to handle a fishing rod. Buy, borrow or adopt a small dog- poodles work fine- and get a 2 foot cartoon rod from Wallymart. Help your kid learn to cast it- can't start flippin' too soon- and watch their eyes light up when the dog nails the casting plug that comes with the rod and takes off down the hall. They'll learn how to set the drag, keep the rod loaded and what it feels like to get sawed off. All I do is open the closet where we keep the rods and both kids are instantly jacked up. You may want to try a 20 lb. leader just so you don't have to keep retying-poodles have teeth like a darn walleye! Hope this keeps your spirits up until we can all get out there and catch some more (And bigger) bass. Happy New Year to all.

Report: (NOTE: Lost Creek is incorrect above!!! I had to select something in order to get this posted to your site!!! --- Lost River and Topsy Reservoir in Oregon are not available in your list!!! Please note and add them.)

Hello All! I just stumbled on this Web Site, and thought I would share the two places that I have had bass fishing success in Oregon.

Recently, I have fished Craine Prairie Reservoir, just southwest of Bend, OR. I have caught 4 & 5 lb. bass out of this lake, and many other people I know have taken 6 to 8 lb. fish, too. Personally, I like to use only top water plugs - I'm a sport fisherman, not a meat fisherman - and I love to see the fish hit at the surface!

Previously, I lived in Klamath Falls, OR and fished a warm water river called, Lost River. It is primarily used for feeding the farms and ranches with irrigation water. This river runs through the Klamath Basin, the Langell Valley, the Poe Valley, etc. There is a small dam on the Lost River, in the Klamath Basin, that provides a nice "lake-like" area to fish for largemouth. Our family has taken a lot of bass out of this little area, and many big bass as well.

I caught the "undocumented" Oregon state record for largemouth out of Lost River - an 11 lb. bass - back in 1980. I never turned it in for credit! We just didn't want everyone and their brother showing up at our special fishing spots. We have caught many 8 pounders, 6 pounders, too. In general you can expect 3 pounds to 5 pounds as the norm.

Previously, my family and I have kept this place a secret to ourselves, in the state of Oregon, just because we didn't want everyone in Northern California or Oregon to show up.

I am now in my 50s and live in the Portland area, and would like to see more people in Oregon enjoying the growing bass fishery in our beautiful state.

So, if anyone is in that area, they should give Lost River a try.

(Also, go to Topsy Reservoir, along the Klamath River, -- they have great bass fishing there, too!)

      Regards,
      - Mike Jones
      City: Klamath Falls, OR

Tips: Be patient. I use topwater plugs, (Jitterbugs, Hula Poppers, Bass-O-Renos, etc.) Cast to shorelines with tree overhangs, look for points, or underwater structure near deep holes. Fish early in the morning, or in the evening hours. Be patient and let the plug sit after the cast. Twitch it. Then, a slow, lazy retrieve. Stop the retrieve at times. Then start again. Try a fast retrieve, too, to change things up.

Also, try a black Slug-Go soft plastic - medium sized. Cast it and let it slowly sink. Twitch it. Then do your thing on the retrieve.

      Good luck.

      Water Temp: 55-58??

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Went to Cottage Grove in the kayak today. Fished along the dam area and the wall but couldn't get a bite. Used a pig and jig and a Lucky Craft Pointer 100. I made a long cast across the mouth of Shortridge Cove and gave the lure a few sharp rips and then sat the rod in my lap to fiddle with some gear. When I picked up the rod and tightened up on the line I could feel it bumping something- the bottom or more likely one of the many stumps out there- so I paused and then pulled. Then the rod doubled up and it was fish on! I got taken for a pretty decent ride. The whole time I'm saying out loud actually "Be a BASS, be a BASS!" A minute later it came up to where I could see it and it was a bass. I lipped her, got my pliers, got the hooks out and reached for the camera....which was still in the van at the ramp! Dam I hate when that happens. It was 5 pounds, 10 ounces, 20 inches long and 17 1/2 in girth. Beautiful with no marks on her and a big chubby belly! It's my biggest Oregon bass so far. She was very calm like a lot of the nicer sized ones seem to be once you land them. I let her go in about a foot and a half of water and in her haste to get away from the kayak she promply beached herself. I was able to coax her to deeper water with a gentle prod or two with the paddle. Then I let out a primal type scream partly from the joy of catching a good fish and partly from forgetting the camera. One bite, one fish and one great memory from my favorite Oregon lake. Weather was a bit windy- just a bit and overcast also.
      City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: Fish slower and slower as it gets cooler and cooler. I like lures like pig and jigs, big worms without long wiggly tails, deeper jerkbaits and of course 5-8" swimbaits in trout patterns. You can't really go wrong for the better fish with these lures. Oh yeah- don't forget the big spinnerbaits come early spring.

Report: Lake is extremely low right now. Boat ramps are both useable. It's almost 40feet below pool. Caught 3 largemouth near the dam where the rip-rap stops and lake bottom begins. All fell prey to a dropshot 3" Roboworm leach in about 30 feet of water. Not much size, only 12-14 inches. Surprised to not get bit by any smallmouth because that's where I usually get them.

Report: Took my brother in law from Minnesota out to see if we could catch a few largies. Since he's on vacation I couldn't get him out until 7AM. Got to the lake and started fishing at about 8AM. We had on t-shirts for the first 3 1/2 hours and then rainsuits for the next 3. We started in an area that usually produces a few. He got a nice 16" 2lb,3oz. on a jig and grub. Then a while later he got a 7" bass on a bobber and chunk of crawler. We moved over to the stick up tree and I finally got one- a 17 1/2" 3lb,2oz. on a jig and chunk. And then it started sprinkling and the fish really turned on. It wasn't one of those crazy bite every cast deals but what was amazing was the quality of the fish. Almost all of the fish we got once it started raining were over 2 lbs.. And they were nailing our jigs. I tried a few other lures- spook, chatterbait and crankbaits because of all the surface activity but all they wanted were the jigs. All but one of the fish were fat and very good fighters. After a while the bite did die off a bit- 2 hours of steady rain and we kind of lost our enthusiasm too! We had the whole lake to ourselves- even the shore fishermen packed up and left. It makes sense that the fish would go wacky and be swimming around with their backs out of the water when none of us evil fishermen are around. well almost none of us!
      City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: When the weatherman says 30% chance of showers....head for the lake and hope it does rain. And don't forget your box of jigs and trailers! Or your rainsuit. Or "your" brother in law from wherever.

Report: This report is for Cottage Grove. Fished from 5:30-11:00AM. Overcast the whole time and a full moon. If you need a dock to launch then this lake is done for the year. I had to tie my boat sideways to the end of the dock and only had 2-3' of water under it. If someone else goes along you can just dump it in but you still have to hop in the boat somehow after you park the trailer. Guess that's why I bought a kayak!!
I had a good day. The bass are finally eating my pig and jig again. It has been real slow up until now at least for me. All the bass I got were in or very near a creek channel. I'm gonna miss that fishfinder when I'm in the kayak. And the bass seemed a little scattered out. I got 2 pound and a half clones in one area, a 2 1/2 off that tree down by the creek, and another 2 1/2 at the junction of a small creek and a steep grassy shoreline. It looks like they dredged out a little channel so the ski boat guys can get to their boats from the east shore campgrounds. I missed as many bites as I hooked but still had a fun day. The fish in this lake put up great fights for their size- but I still miss the smallmouths we used to catch in California. One of these days I'll quit being lazy and go try the Umpqua or one of the lakes with SM in it.
      City: yoncalla, oregon

Tips: Brown and black pig and jig with brown Zoom chunk trailer- the bass love 'em. Watch your line and don't ask yourself- "Was that a bite?"
SET THE DARN HOOK!!!!!!! Then let them go so somebody else can catch 'em!
Cloudy and or overcast days as close to a full moon as possible work for me. Keep a logbook- you'll be surprised at how consistent it can be from year to year. Bass really are creatures of habit!

Report: Fished Siltcoos for the first time in 5-6 years. I actually headed there to confirm my suspicions that Siltcoos was still a tough lake for me. We didn't show up till 11am and the wind was already 15+mph. hooked 4 got 3 to the boat. 2.8,2.7,1.5. and the big one that snapped off. Off the water at 3:30pm. The last time I fished Siltcoos I remember not a lot of fish but the one's you hooked were big, meaning, not a lot of new recruitment of smaller fish. The 2.8 and 2.7 were small females while the 1.5 was a male... good sign for this lake. Maybe it will make a comeback. All fish came from the proverbial Senco. What did I fish before these things came out?!
      City: Medford

Tips: In the old days I would nail them on twin tailed hula grubs and other bait's. I threw them for about 2 hrs. while watching the other guy's stick fish on Senco's. So, reluctantly, I switch to a Senco and wouldn't you know it...Wham! I would really like to find some of my old bait's work again. I'm tired of Senco's! There must be some sort of Bass

Report: We fished emigrant last night for 5 hours. Caught a lot of Smallies most were between 10-14", but we did catch 2 over 3lbs, and lost Three more 3lbs or bigger near the boat. We only caught 2 largemouth both small. All of the bigger fish came on spinnerbaits.

Tips: We didnt fish plastics at all, and fished crankbaits a lot, but they were not real productive.

Biggest was 3.8. best five was approx. 12.7. No pattern. Fishing was kind of tough (I thought) so we went to Siltcoos on Sunday.

Report: Fished sat. and sun. with a slow bite. Caught fish on senkos and buzzbaits. I also managed to catch a fish on a swimbait on the tressles during the few minutes i fished on friday. My best 5 on sat was a little over 16lbs and sunday was a little over 12. mainly fished the edge of creek channels and pads on sat. and fished docks on sunday. Unfortunitly i was not able to get to the same spot on sunday as i fished on sat. but was told the bite wasn't really happening up there anyways. The buzzbait bites were few and far between but when a fish did come up on them i had to hold on because they were all big fish.
      City: Medford

Tips: BE PATIENT! I fished two spots on sat. and knew that there were good fish in those spots. I only caught 6 fish on saturday but they were all good quality. If you pick up a fish in a certain spot dont be afraid to leave it and hit it up again every hour, it works. oh almost forgot i was using 8lb test on the senkos.
