Report: LAKE POWELL FISH REPORTAugust 23, 2001 By Wayne Gustaveson Home Page: www.wayneswords.com Lake Elevation: 3667 Water Temperature: 77-80 F
City: Page, AZTips: Ater a ew weeks o generalized surace eeding activity shad numbers have declined but moreimportantly orage ish have learned to avoid stripers. Boils have decreased in number as striperschools need to work harder to drive shad to the surace or trap them in the back o a cove. Boilsstill occur but on an irregular basis. Stripers ind a school o deep shad and attempt to drive themto a vulnerable eeding ground. When stripers are successul a memorable boil ensues. Theeeding experience is oten not repeatable the next day. Now anglers have to be a little bit luckyto ind stripers on top. The best time to look or surace action is still during the irst 3 hours o daylight. The boil is justas likely to occur at 8:30 AM as 5 AM.. This week boils were reported in the backs o canyonsadjoining Padre Bay, at Castle Creek on the San Juan, and at Trachyte, Farleys, and North Washin the Hite area. With shad becoming more scarce the anchovy catch is increasing. Fish anchovies at 30-40 eet atthe mouth o Antelope canyon in the main channel, shaded walls on the point o Padre Canyonjutting out into Padre Bay (Padre canyon side o butte separating Padre rom Kane Creek), onemile downstream rom Halls Creek on the walls o the main channel, and cli walls near themouth o Forgotten Canyon. The San Juan has uncountable numbers o stripers to be had inDeep Canyon, Piute Canyon, steep rockslide between Cha Canyon and Pinnacle Rock, islandupstream and on the opposite side o the bay rom Neskahi Canyon. Some ish are declining in health. Catching them is enough o an energy drain that they cannotreturn to depth. KEEP ALL STRIPERS. Fillet the healthy ones and properly dispose o thosetoo thin to illet. Do not leave them loating on the surace. Preerred method o disposal is at aish cleaning station. Bass ishing is good with a

Water Temp: 79.5
Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: Fished 8-16 7PM to 8-17-01,0630, started out fishing the narrows in the 15 to 30 ft range with no bites. Beginning about 9 PM, action started and it was on again/off again the rest of the night. Caught 8 fish, mostly spots on variety of soft plastics. Almost all action was from 5 to 15 ft deep on points and good rock walls. Two lagest were about 14 inches. Best fish broke me off in the brush and was likely 3 lbs plus. The bite totally quit about 0430, when I thought the best bite would be from about then to 7 AM.

Camp Far West Lake
-
Water Temp: High
Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)
Report: In the 16 + years I've been ishing Camp Far West Lake, I've only seen the water lower than it is this year a couple o times. It's so low that otherwise innocent structure is now a distinct hazard to boaters.Unortunately, regardless o these low water hazards, the jet skiers and hotrod boaters that the current management caters to continue to travel at very high speeds, making things even more dangerous and unpleasant or everyone else.
City: WheatlandTips: Wait to ish this lake until the rains return, the water levels rise and the hotrod boats stay home.

Report: It is hard to believe that out o all the olks ishing Saturday night - and there were a lot! - no posts have appeared. I guess none o them have computers! I think I saw ive boats near Frazier Point alone - some day (or night) that area is going to run out o ish! Does anybody ever put any back there ater tournaments? Just a thought. Anyway, I guided a couple o wonderul clients in their Ranger R-93 - great boat! We started near Rattlesnake Island about 6:30 pm, and missed the irst 4 ish. Three hits on crankbaits and one on a jig - we never could hook them - they might have been small bass. We tried areas near Buckingham Point - nothing. The wind eased up a bit, so we headed or Henderson - I like to ish that area beore dark. Good decision - we caught 3 beore dark and one ater - biggest near 5 lbs. What did we catch them on you ask - the tried and true 10" Power Worm! We then worked Shag, Dollar, etc. - again, nothing. The wind allowed us to try the Wheeler Point area. We put two more in the boat, and lost one. We inished up on some rocky area, catching two more. and missing a ew. One o the clients broke o 17 lb test on a good ish. Since it was his rod, I'm not sure what kind o line he was using. That is always disappointing! We needed a big bass!! The average size o our eight bass was only about 3 1/2 lbs. Not a real exciting night ish-wise, but, as always, we had a great time!!
City: Yuba CityTips: The ish were agressive just beore dark, and again about 1:30 in the morning. The bass were taking the worm on a breakline - any type o rock lat with a quick drop. We were working the worm just as slow as we could without hanging up. Crankbaits and spinnerbaits might have worked well, but we didn't use them much. I do think there was a way to catch bigger bass that night, but we didn't igure it out. Some nights, the big bass just arn't active, and you have to be content with the smaller ones.

Water Temp: 82
Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: Fished Fri. the 17th. Started in Rattle Snake Arm in AM then hit Soda Bay & inished o the day in Konocti. Small ish until last hour o light in Konocti. I hooked a 4+ on a split shot 4" watermelon with red lake curly tail worm a ew eet o o a rock point near a pump house then a 100' urther into the cove on a hard bottom lat abou 20' o the bank my wie hooks & lands a 6+ on a renegade 4" motoroil twirly tail worm. Today was her birthday & she celebrated by boating her biggest ish to date. A ew casts later in the same area she hooked a 7+ but it spit the hook.
City: DehiTips: Their in the process o weed kill in the Lakeport area so the better ishing is in the mid to lower end. Better bite is early morning or late evening. Try to ind deeper rock piles or deeper hardbottom lats.

Water Temp: ?
Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: I could start by saying my partner Dylan opens my eyes to a new approach many times when we ish. Actually, I believe he derives great pleasure trying to take me out o my game every time we strap it on, and this day was no dierent. I ended up with about 10 ish to 2 lbs. I told him about the great blade bite I'd established on the last trip, but in his own words the delta is just a great big pond with tides. His report below is quite sysinct although he omitted the part about casting his Long A into the trees numerous times. Then there was the occation when I lipped a little cast underneath with a spinnerbait and nailed one. Going under him was no great challenge- he was so ar up in trees nesting eagles would have been in great peril. And when he drug the treble hooks accross the rusty corregated tin roo o the marina he cast over it gave me the shakes. He's ruthless- laughter is an unair strategy. He took advantage too- my wie and kids let town and I've ished three consecutive mornings prior. My tank was empty. I put a ew twos in the boat with blades and rattletrapps, nailed a 9lb striper, and put together a three to zip rally at the end when the tide shited, but my dog Dylan did it his way and basically wore me out- again. See the report below.
City: El Dorado HillsTips: When the ish are cooperative it's a great day to ish with a buddy and not take the sport so seriously.

Water Temp: 76-78
Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)
Report: Well, I inally bought a little bass boat(14'). My buddy and I headed out around 5:00p.m. We ished or three hours or so. It started slow then bam a 5 pounder on a senko(watermelon black lake). I got another 3lb on a speed trap(craw). My buddy got 3 ish all around 3 lbs. Got a ew more smaller ones all together 8 bass. I did have a little excitment. I threw my 1/4 speed trap but, the line got wrapped around the ront treble hook so as I was reeling it in it was spinning at the surace. Something BIG slammed it hard but, I missed him. I will never know how big it was but the splash was huge. I went out a ew days beore and had good luck on senkos watermelon, rootbeer, and black w/ red lake and chartruse spinners.
City: AlamedaTips: Catch and release. High tide crank the speedtraps over the weed beds.

Folsom Lake

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: Went ishing with zipperworm today. We got on the lake at about 6:00 A.M. He took us to a spot that looked good or bass. So my little brother gets a backlash while I'm working my bait, I turn around or a second and eel a tug and resistense. At irst I thought it was a snag then I saw my line moving so I set the hook and pulled up a tournament keeper that was about a pound. First ish o the day and MY last ish o the day.Zipperworm told you about the ish he lost cause it was nylon vs granite. Today I caught a ish while my little brother blanked this time. But as useual, every time we go out zipperworm catches all the ish. But he cant help it, I mean, he gives us the irst shot at everything but we just don't do something right, or the ish aren't in the mood or what we throw. OR, we sometimes don't work the bait right.
City: FolsomTips: Chech your line or nicks and roughness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Water Temp: ?
Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: Several 2 to 5 hour outings since my wie let town with the kids culminated in a an epic break-o o a ish on 14lb XT this morning- more on this in a minute. Yesterday morning probably was the actual peak o the action. Two limits, best 15lbs. A 5.2 and a 3.7 largemouth and some 2lb spots rounding out the best ive. My tournament partner or next week called at 9:30 the night beore and said he couldn't make it. Stable lake level- it's dropping only a oot per week, and stable weather provide a remote chance it could be dulpicated next week when it counts. Blademan rolls up on me about 10 and I'm sitting on a point almost asleep. I told him the bite had slowed- I had just a couple snakes since 8. He wasn't too empathetic, but he shared another technique and I want to thank him. I caught a ew more spots to 2lbs and I'll have a more than a one dementional approach to the tournament or a change. To break up the monotony I'm hooking up with my buddy Swimbait and heading or the Delta. Big contrast between these two locations- normally. It took me ive minutes to put away one spinning rod, get the lippin stick out, and change the color o the bait on another one o my outits. For competitive courtesy I eel obligated to remain subtle on clues regarding the techiniques I used.
City: El Dorado HillsTips: Low water has it's advantages, and bass behavior is airly predictable in stable, summertime weather conditions. Hit another boulder with the engine while idling with the big motor. Nearest visible object was 100 yards away. Don't loan me your boat.
