Report: Well the kokanee were NOT put there to feed other fish. They were planted as a game fish. Besides, the only time they would be esspecially vulnerable to predation in this lake (where even the trout are on average 13 inch planter class fish) would be when they are planted as 4 inch fingerlings. If you have spent much time fishing this lake in the last few years (esspecially this year), the average kokanee has been larger than the average trout.
      City: Kokaneeville

Tips: 14-17 inch kokanee on anything pink or orange (hoochies, kokanee candy, needlefish, wedding rings) and silver slingblades with silver tape. Also red on silver blade. If they arent biting and you know you're in the right depth zone, try using a longer leader (5-6ft.) Fish moving down to 45-65 feet.

Report: Well this is 1 lake that needs more info, so here we go.The son And I had a club tourny (33 boats),(6hrs),and (103 degrees).I was the gate and did not prefish so had to go off of history. That being said since 32 other boats went before me, my choices where limited. I ran to the North fork on the long wall to the left just before the Marina and stared crankin and top water about 15min I got a huge blow up on my Zara and missed, threw back and missed again, one more time and hooked up just to lose it at the boat and get a good look at it(solid 4 lbr). Then I got to watch a club member set the hook and fight a 11 lbr and get it in the boat. So I knew I was in a good spot and stayed there for about 2 hrs I got 2 fish from there(3 1/2 & 1 1/2). The place was loaded with shad and the fish were coming out of the flume to the flat to feed, but I couldn't wait so I ran around crying. I finally ended up at 3 rocks area and my son put another 2 fish (3 1/2 & 2)in the boat and I graphed fish in 10 feet threw a drop shot an stuck 3 more keepers to cull a limit. All of this within 10 minutes. Ok here's the deal: if your crankin you should catch fish early but the bite is there all day. Back at the scales it took 26 lbs to win, 2 people caught 11+. Crankin, jigs, dropshot, brushhogs, and finess all do the trick. We ended up with 12 1/2 lbs so it's all were you go and what you through. Oh yea and some luck too.
      City: Bakersfield

Tips: Earlier the better, up close say 15' to bank, points and flats, look for bait, shad and craw pattern. Good luck and keep your line wet.

Report: A visit to check condtions for next weeks 'Lopez Open' offered by Gold Coast Bass. If you havent made one of these opens, now is the perfect time. Lots of fun and a great BBQ and the always welcomed 'Great Raffle'. 1/2 6 to noon.

Lake still showing a bit of green algea in the backside by Vasquez. Water is warm which should prompt some better fishing.

** BE ADVISED ** If you havent been to Lopez in the past few weeks, a "NEW" pipe gate is in place on the launch ramp and it does not open until 6AM so don't think you can come early and launch -- Aint gunna happen!

Headed to the Vasquez area to check out the habitat for the warmmer waters. Tossed a few blades and a few cranks but no takers. Threw a few senko's with maybe only a couple of taps so pickedup the trusty drop-shot and scored on two nice smallies against the walls in 35-45 feet. Moved off towards the dam area and only managed a small dink, started to cruise the 'Miricle Mile walls and hit on another nice smallie. Not bad but still no Large's. Headed deep looking but still no takers. Called it a day early. Wind was coming up and it was cooler than normal today. Crazy jet-skiers were clear back past the Vasquez sign and I saw a ranger escorting two of them out. Will never learn I suppose. More skiers out because of the wammer water and it was pretty choppy.

Report: Family water-skiing trip to Lake San Antonio in Central California. This year the fish wanted a little bit of alcohol in their diet :)

We arrived Sunday, July 6 around 4:00 pm. It was HOT!!! After un-packing I walked down to the shore to make a few casts with my son Pierce. Our bait of choice for the past few years has been the 3 inch Blue Shad colored Big Hammer swimbait. Since it has produced so well for us in the past we pretty much planned to use that. But, with the recent popularity of the color "Sexy Shad" (that looks identical to the Big Hammer color #63 "Bay Smelt" - which came out about 5 years before "Sexy Shad") I decided to give Bay Smelt a shot. The lake level is very low - probably the lowest I've ever seen it. I started fishing from the shore to the left of the Lynch launch ramp. Within 10 minutes I had my first smallie (about 14 inches). Great fun! About 15 minutes later I hook up again (on Bay Smelt) with a nicer fish that turned out to be in the 17-18 inch range. Fished for a few more minutes before Pierce wanted to go back to the cabin.

That evening we took the boat out (ski boat - no trolling motor - not quite the perfect fishing vessel) to set up our day camp in Bee Rock Cove. After setting it up we quickly went over to the South side of the cove and got a couple more smallies. My sister got one on Blue Shad and I got one on Bay Smelt.

July 7th: The next morning we took the boat out early and only got one small bass on the 3 inch swimbait!!!! I couldn't believe it. After the success yesterday I figured it would be wide. We launched out of the Harris Creek launch ramp and fished the entire Harris Creek cove. Mark and Zack stuck to the Blue Shad and Bay Smelt swimbaits while I played with a bunch of different baits. Fished the Lucky Craft pointer the most for nothing except for one follower that wouldn't commit. I did notice that there were lots (I mean lots) of shad this year - very small ones. Later at our day camp I was only able to manage one more small bass.

July 8th: New game plan. This morning we launched out of Lynch and went North. I started off throwing a blue/chrome Rat-L-Trap which has worked well for me in the past. My nephew Zack was using a 3 inch Margarita colored swimbait. I figured a completely different color (bright green) might set the swimbait apart from all the shad just enough. Within 15 minutes Zack hooks up with a nice fish that is taking line (striper?). Sure enough he lands a decent striper. Fished the area for a few more minutes for nothing, then ventured into a nearby cove where I get a nice largemouth on the Silverside colored Buzz Hammer. Later mid-day fishing at our day camp in between water-skiing runs the fishing was much better - more like previous years. I ended up with 6 nice smallies and missed several more - all on the 3 inch Margarita colored swimbait.

July 9th: New game plan again. Launched out of Harris Creek with the plan to fish the Margarita swimbait. Fished a few spots in Harris Creek for nothing. Ran over to Bee Rock Cove where Zack hooks up with a nice smallie on the 3 inch Margarita followed by another decent one a few minutes later. Then came my highlight of the trip. We were fishing a steep rocky bank on the South side of Bee Rock Cove. I was alternating between the 3 inch Margarita colored swimbait and Margarita colored Buzz Hammer. I cast the Buzz Hammer near a fallen log and it moves about 6 inches when a nice bass jumps completely over the bait and misses it entirely. I continue to reel and when the bait is about 4 feet from the boat it gets SLAMMED!! One of the most vicious top-water strikes I think I've ever gotten. It was awesome! My guess is the fish was upset that she missed the bait on the first try and then chased it down.

Not the best trip we've ever had but still good. Some nice highlights and the challenge of figuring out what they wanted was fun.

Report: Had a tourney with my son and I just 1 of 25 boats. Lake still shows signs of algae boom after a month or so. We started cranking to the left of the Dam and picked up 2 small mouth, then went to the dam it's self and picked up 2 large mouth. after that went up Lopez arm to one of my favorite spots and the bite was on. We caught well over 30 keepers within 3hrs between 2-3 lbs.all on cranks. No major big fish, but our fingers were ate up by the end of the day. We finished with 12 lbs. and it was the best day I've had for numbers of fish in a long time. My son's 14 yrs old and it was his best day on the water by far. After the tourney (12pm) I took my wife and my son's friend back out and we picked up another 20 keeper fish again, well over a 50 fish day by far. All cranks very little worm and jig fish, although we didn't fish them that much.
      City: Bakersfield

Tips: Bluetruce Norman deep little N,sun craw worked the best. Look for flats with shad and deep water. The fish are taking the whole bait and you Know it.

A great turnout to this years Lopez Open with 17 boats on hand to share in the prizes. Winners in with 17+ and big fish winners with a just under a 6 pounder to gather in the cash awards. Weather turned out great compaired to the day before with wind coming in around 10ish but calmed down towards noon to make the ending day worth a few more pounds to some. A very special thanks to Royer Marine for the gift and for brining some nice rides for all to look at and to Tackle Warehouse for once again offering some great prizes and a very nice grand prize worth over $500.

Report: On the lake about 1 Pm man it's down started in the 5 MPH zone and back to the river "if" you can call it that even the holes are gone to about 4'. Had a few small 6 to 12" fish around the trees and in some of the coves we could get into. The best fish came in the South-west along the road where you can walk in as there are still rock piles and some deeper water there. We hit about 12 fish between 1 Pm and 5 Pm. Most where only 8 to 13" with a few keepers a Small limit. Big fish today was only 3-1/2#. Most came on Pro-gold with a bloodline. A few on shad blades and Shad traps in the 3" size. Talked to a few fishing for cat's and the bite there is slow as well.
      City: Frresno

Tips: Hunt and when you find them around rocks you will hit a few there. We had 2 to 4 fish on the same points and rocks. Most fish where in 1 to 6" of water.
      Good luck and have fun.....

Report: Two meets going on today -- ABA and Gold Coast. Early launch at 5:30 to a somewhat 'foggy' start. A bit cool but the days conditions were expected in the high 90's by noon. My first visit to Antone since way back in 200 or 1999 so finding spots were alot different and we wnt into todays meet 'blind' as it were.

Partner and I headed for Harris Creek and fished the walls with blades and cranks with no takers. Moved off into some other flats tossing about everything looking for a bite. Bad day for us both as we came in witn a goose-egg.

Gold Coast winner in with a shade over 9 pounds along with big fish at about 2.25. ABA winner in with about 10 and change. Most saying it was a tough day and you had to get your bag before 11AM. 1/4oz Black/White buzz bait was the choice for the Gold Coast winners fish as he was culling a very short time after launch.
      City: SM

Tips: Blades and buzz's were taking most fish. Senkos and jigs all medium green color, were hitting fish very close to the shore in as little as 2 feet.

Start early against the bank from North shore last launch. 14" fish were common. Big crappie were hitting rip baits.
