Lopez Lake

Water Temp: 71-73
Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)
Report: Got to the lake at 0630, not in a big hurry, as I wanted to mostly run the motor to clean out the 2 months worth of sitting. Anyhow, pretty dismal day, only caught 2 fish; 1 about 16, the other a dink. Roboworms seemed to work. Moved to bridge and lost a quality fish as it pulled alot of drag before it cut the line on the rocks. Would have been nice to see it. Guy I was with lost a quality on as well earlier in the day. Left around 1100 winds just to much.
City: LompocTips: Pick a different day when the water clears to stained

Water Temp: 67o
Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)
Report: Water clarity today was better but still pretty dismal as not to many people saying they were hitting good. A few smallies near the dam and 1 small large [10"] back by Vasquez. Hit a huge blue gill on my shad liplessand three more in a small cove across from Vasquez. Moved off as that isn't what I was looking for. Worked the walls back in Lopez Canyon with minimal success on drops, cranks and weightless. Moved back to the marina and headed to the bridge arwa, looking for areas to work. Picked up the lipless shad and tossed it for a good 1/2 hour with only one decent taker. Wind was up again and it was a pretty blustery day on the main lake and seemed worse in the marina with many boaters having real problems in loading up. Called it quits at noon being tired of the wind and a trolling motor battery that was pretty used up.
City: SANTA MARIATips: Going to be a tough road come this next weekend for the Lopex Open.

Lopez Lake
-
Water Temp: 63
Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)
Report: Algea bloom has stopped but the water clarity was still pretty dismal Sunday as I went out in search of possible locations for the upcoming Lopez Open. Put a few smallies in the boat but nothing of any size. Charted fish from 10 to 45 feet with only a few interested takers on the lures and spots that usually payoff at the Lopes. Headed to the back past the last dock and in the stick-ups with jigs and hit a few smallies but seemed like that was all that was home. Worked the walls with cranks and top's early and nothing. Tossed a drop with several different colors, weights and hook size with no takers. Headed in with a dismall day and the wind still up.
City: Santa MariaTips: Will hit it again Sunday and see how the changes have been hoping that the larger critters move closer in but with this front coming, it may be the same.

Report: Yearly family Water-skiing trip with a little fishing thrown in.
July 8: Arrived late afternoon. Took the boat out to set up our day camp. On the way back we stopped at the mouth of Harris Creek to let the kids fish a little. We didn't have too much time but my 10 year old Nephew Zack managed to get two smallmouth (13 & 14 inches).
July 9: Float tubed North of the Lynch launch ramp in the morning from about 5:00 am until 7:30 am. It was very slow. Tried various lures for nothing. Kicked down past two major points. At about 7:00 am I turned around and quickly started kicking back toward the launch ramp as I only had until about 7:30 am. On my way back I threw a 3 inch Big Hammer at the shoreline and was able to pick up three largemouth between 12 and 14 inches.
Throughout the day at our day camp (North shore just inside Bee Rock Cove) we had a pretty decent bite on smallmouth. Not really focusing on fishing several of us would just grab a rod and make a few casts here and there throughout the day. My 7 year old Nephew Ryan got three including a 16 and 18 incher. My sister Brigitta also got three smallies in the 12 to 15 inch range and I picked up a couple as well.
This evening after dinner we walked down near the Lynch launch ramp and boat dock and fished from shore for an hour or so for a couple nice largemouth caught by my brother-in-law Mark.
July 10: Took the boat out early this morning. Launched at the Harris Creek launch ramp. My initial plan was to go into the cove at the mouth of Harris Creek and hit the rock walls and points to try for smallmouth. On the way over I decided to stop and fish the first main point to the right. I positioned the boat, Mark threw out just off the point and hooked up immediately. I noticed that the fight was a little different. A little more steady pulling instead of the craziness of a black bass. I thought striper and sure enough a couple minutes later Mark pulls in about a 15 inch striper. Cool! Every year I think about getting on a striper bite but don't really want to fish bait to find it. A few mintues later Mark hooks up again. This time the fish starts pulling some good drag on his 8 lb. spinning gear. He gets it to the boat, just about lands it, and it shakes out of his hand and breaks off. Looked to be about a 5 pounder. He re-ties, casts out, and immediately hooks up again. After a nice fight he gets a 7 pounder on the boat. Shortly after that Zack hooks up and gets worked by a fish we never see. Breaks him off on 8 pound. The bite seemed to die off a little so we move down to a "sub" point just to the North and sure enough as soon as we get there Mark hooks up and lands another one at 6 pounds. Meanwhile I can't seem to get a striper to hit but do get a couple of smallmouth and one spotted bass. The bite slows down about an hour after it starts so we move around inside of the cove for a few more smallies to about 2 pounds.
The fishing at our day camp today wasn't as hot as it was yesterday but we did manage to get a few smallies in the 11 to 14 inch range.
July 11: Took the boat out early again and ran straight to the point were we found the stripers yesterday. Unfortunately, they didn't want to play again. Ryan came with us today and got a nice largemouth there but not much else. We moved around again and caught several more smallies including a nice 2.5 pounder Zack caught.
The fishing at our day camp was slow. Only one smallmouth caught but there wasn't too much fishing today as we were having fun being pulled around in the tube.
All fish were caught casting and straight grinding 3 inch Big Hammer swimbaits. Most of the fish were caught on the Blue Shad color except for one largemouth on the Silverside color and Zack's 2.5 pounder which was on the Margarita color.

Report: Gold Coast Tourny today with a respectable entry for the 1/2 day tournement.
A warm morning launch at 5:30 and partner and I headed to our 1st stop. Guess the name of todays catch was 'DINK' as fish after fish hit the boat with no one over 12 inch's. Moved around looking for better weight and finally partner hit a keeper. Favorite spots went south today and we elected to start looking around rocky points. Located a good spot around 10:30 and we went from 1 keeper to five in a matter of a 1hour or less but all were like snakes! Long but thin, but we started culling the three smaller ones in the hole.
In the scale with 6 and change and our big fish that was over 17 only capped under 2 pounds! Wow. These guys need big time food to put on weight. Prett much the same story as several came in with limits but all in the 6 to 7 range. Winners: F Fernadez and partner in with 8 plus and big fish at 2.9, 2nd Tomey and Tomey in with 7+ and 3rd Johnson and Westbrook in with 7+
City: Santa MariaTips: Winners said most of the bag was on black cranks and jerks?? I suppose. Partner and I hit on jigs and beavers and only a few cranks fish. No top water at all so it went back in the box, unused. Next stop --- LOPEZ OPEN ON 21 JULY! A great outing for all with loads of raffle
giveaways and good payout!

Report: ABA tourney today with 10 boats on hand and a launch at 5:30AM. Early morning chill in the air but not much fog comparied to last Saturday. Temperatures down considerably from a week gone by but the expected and wanted wind never showed much. Hit our 1st stop with cranks and immediately noticed a fall in size and weight. I hung the 1st keeper but it was small and not a promising outlook for the day. Worked the walls and grassy areas for a few more but still, all the fish were small. Started culling at 7:15 but by 9, the bite went South!. Hit a few more of our stops with nothing but smaller fish. Switched out from the cranks to soft spyder gub bait and oicked up a few more to cull out. Headed back to the marina area looking ofor bigger cull but didn't pay off. Winners in with around 9 pounds and a black bass in at 2 and change took home all the big fish cash and the surplus big fish option for a kwel $900.
City: Santa MariaTips: Lots of small fish today and 7 pounds shy of last weeks good bag which would have won this neet hands down! OH WELL -- THATS WHY THE CALL IT FISHING ------
