  • Water Temp: 60-62

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Friday I met my clients at Pleasure Cove about 10:30 am for a post-Thanksgiving trip. Not my everyday set of clients - a father and his 7 and 11 year old sons!! Could the boys bass fish? YES - they would put some of my adult clients to shame! Simply delightful, polite, wonderful young boys. Gives me hope for the future! I was prepared for some tough fishing as one of my friends was there the day before and said the bass had gone very deep. He was right - most of the 30 to 60 foot bait balls were gone. Found some at 80-90 feet! About 2pm they all wanted to spoon! It is amazing to see a 7 year old pick up the spooning technique in a few minutes - he was great!! I had them fishing 1 3/4 oz Blade Runner spoons. Trouble is - with the big fish moving very deep, the dinks became active and they were spooning 5 to 8 in bass right and left! They did land a few nice smallies up to 2 1/2 lbs - biggest on a Berkely Flappin' Hog. We stayed on the west side of the lake most of the day.

Tips: The lake had not turned over as of Friday and we saw no surface activity of any kind - bait, trout, or bass. After I left them off, I went out for the last half-hour of light - working topwater and crankbaits. Nothing! It is raining as I write this, and a better storm is due Tues. I really believe a good dose of fresh water will help get the bite going. Lots of bass boats out Friday and some of them might have found a better early morning bite. No one posts helpful info much anymore. Too bad!

  • Water Temp: 64

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: I went out with Albert and John this past week. The weather was perfect and the lake was calm. The water temperature was 64 degrees. We had a good day and our three largest bass were 2+ up to 5 pounds (see photo). The next day I went out with Sunshine and headed towards the ranch house. We fished that area for a while and saw lots of smaller bass. I was hoping the trout would be closer to the surface but they weren't in this area. But I heard that they were coming to the surface by the dam. I met Hudson and his friend Devine who were casting for bass at the launch ramp and they showed me a trout they had caught and when I spoke to Hudson's dad Justin he showed me pictures of the bass they had caught up to 6 pounds. He said he used large minnows and was fishing in 30 feet of water at the points and were getting hits left and right(see photos). This coming weekend I'm looking forward to getting some trout action as the water gets colder. 'til next week...........................................good fishing!!!!

  • Water Temp: 55-57

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: The spoonmeister, Rick Tietz and I hit Berryessa Friday, out of Markley Cove. I can almost say we fished the whole lake!! Yes, we were looking for the best bite! I think the full moon may have slowed the day bite. We did well on the Blade Runner 1 3/4 oz spoons around 10:30 am 'til noon. The rest of the day gave us one here and one there - and they got smaller. The good hour did produce some great smallie fishing with several from 3 to 3 3/4 lbs. Couldn't get anything bigger. I did catch a few small largemouth and Rick did get a near 3 1/2 lb spotted bass. Nearly all action was on smallies. Our best 5 were a solid 18 lbs - most of those caught in a one hour period.

Tips: Other than a nice topwater bass I lost at dusk, all our bass were caught on spoons, mostly using Rick's new UV morning dawn color. Black shad worked some, but not as well as previous trips. The average depth of our hookups was about 40 feet - mostly far off-shore. To look at all the exposed structure with your own eyes as opposed to on a meter is simply amazing! One finds oneself saying "so that's what that hump looks like!!!!"

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Friday I went out with Bob and boy what a great time we had!!! At first we were catching small bass but it was a lot of fun almost every cast brought a fish in. We were using P & K lures and they were great. Bob's largest bass was 5+ pounds (see photo). The following morning I took Rich out to show him the lake and some of my favorite spots to fish. He caught four nice small mouth bass. We spent most of the day exploring the lake from the Narrows to the Boy Scout Camp area and from Big Island to Spanish Flat. He was marking the waypoints for future reference while the water is low. Late afternoon I took my buddy Marvin out and headed towards the ranch house where I had seen huge bait balls earlier. We went back and forth through the bait balls and landed 21 bass ranging from 2.5 to 4 pounds each constantly culling the bass till we had 10 nice size fish (see photos). The following day Marv and I headed out again but the water which had been like glass the day before was now white caps with three foot swells. I tried to find a decent place to shelter the boat but it didn't work the water was too rough. We took our time to get to the Narrows but it was bad everywhere. I took a chance and went to a cove near the ranch house I thought would be ideal. It was still rough but manageable and we landed 32 bass from 2 to 5 pounds it was a fishing frenzy we had at least five double hookups here Marv had to net his fish and then mine because I couldn't leave the steering wheel go(see photos). What an incredible few days of fishing!!! My buddy Albert was fishing from the shore with two rods, one set up for bass and one for catfish. He didn't do great on bass but he landed a 17.5 pound catfish (see photo). Good job Albert!!!! "til next time........................good fishing!!!!!

Report: Went out with Albert and Bob for a fun day of fishing. Found a great spot near the BOR that we fished for about three hours mostly top water where we were catching bass left and right. Most of the bass were small but it was a lot of fun. When the sun set I went through the bait balls and the bass we caught were all nice size from 2.5 to 4 pounds. It was a really great day! The following day I took Sunshine and Fabian out and I decided to go back to the same spot as the day before since we had done so well. We hooked a fish almost every other cast and the boys were very excited. Fabian had a good hit and as he reeled it in we saw the fish at the boat and it was a really nice size my bad I didn't have the net ready and he lifted the fish out of the water and it shook loose and was gone. On the way home the boys landed some nice fish from 2 to 3.5 pounds (see photos). Sunshine's Dad called me to thank me for taking the boys out and said they were still talking about the fun they had fishing with me.

    Report: FISHING WITH SID

What a difference a week makes! Two weeks ago on a Saturday I was at the vineyards with Judge and Marcus fishing by the stumps with bass jumping all around us. This past Saturday we went back to the same location but no surface activity. We didn't stay there long before deciding to try the west side working the weed line. Lots of smaller bass which were fun to catch but we were looking for bigger bass. We saw big bait balls and worked them hard. Marcus hooked up to a five pound bass which turned out to be the biggest fish of the day. All the other fish we caught were between 2.5 and 4 pounds. Between Albert, Judge and his son Marcus and myself we caught a limit of quality bass (see photos). 'til next week..................................................good fishing!!!!!!

Report: I took a friend of mine CC to the lake to have some fun spooning for bass. She caught the first four or five fish by big island in about 40ft. Then we went up by putah creek and found a lot of fish that didn't want to bite so we fished our way south to the Spanish flat area where we found a large school of fish and caught quite a few spots and smallmouth to 5lbs. using 1-3/4 and 2oz Blade-Runner spoons.

  • Water Temp: up to 80

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Labor Day weekend was great I went out mid day and stayed out till dusk each day. My aim was to find areas where the top water bite would be successful and I was able to catch some nice bass that way. It took time but it was worth it. One of my favorite new top water lures is called a "Whopper Popper" by River2Sea and I use the trout pattern which was very effective. Enough about me on Sunday I took out Kevin and his son Nick we headed towards the Narrows and our first fish was about six inches long. With all the boat traffic in the area I decided to look for a calmer spot and headed to the east side where the stumps are. We fished three ways, Carolina rig, brass and glass with a worm and senko worm weightless. We started in 25 feet of water and adjusted till we reached 4 feet. We repeated this pattern several times and did well. As we worked our way back towards home Nick caught his largest fish of the day which weighed in a little over four pounds. Next we had a double hook-up as father and son reeled in to see who had the biggest catch! Dad won his bass weighed in close to 5 pounds and Nick's was 3.5 pounds. Good job guys!!! We were heading in for the day and Kevin was trolling using a red and black crankbait and he yells to me that he's stuck. The boat was moving and his line was moving with the boat so I told him to keep reeling you've got a fish and most likely a good size bass. Nick got the net and was standing by after about what seemed like forever Kevin got the fish to the boat and Nick netted it. It barely fit in the net. It turned out to be a 12.5 pound catfish!!!! Great way to end the day(see photos)!!! 'til next week..............................good fishing!!!!

  • Water Temp: 78-83

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: I finally got the "Spoonmeister" Rick Tietz out of the Blade Runner Lures shop and onto a lake. And a break from his new love - Stripers!! We hit Berryessa about 11 am and fished most of the lake in the next 8 hours. Anytime someone fishes with Rick, using his spoons, side by side, they will see him put on a spooning clinic! Luckily, I have seen many of his clinics!! The spoon bite all over the lake was fairly good and is picking up each day. Find the shad and you have probably found the bass! Smallies were on the menu yesterday and we (mostly him!) caught 30+ and 2 spots and 1 largemouth. These smallies were averaging 2 1/2 to near 4 lbs. I lost a smallie at the surface that might have gone 5 lbs. We had to always look at the meter to find the position of the bass. Sometimes they would school about 10 to 15 feet off the bottom. It is possible to spoon BELOW the bass. Remember - they can't see down if they are suspended. They will be at the level of most of the bait. We tried topwater as the shadows formed and I am now 0 for 2. Lost another good topwater bass - the only hit we had. Could not get a Senko bite.

Tips: I did have a few bites drop-shotting a Robo worm. No jig bites! The magic depth for the spoon bite seemed to be about 30 to 35 feet on mostly off-shore bait schools. Lots of bait and bass on way-offshore flats. Steep drop-offs aren't always necessary when spoon fishing, Shad will position on large flats, moving up and down depending on weather conditions. Pick a cloudy day and the bite will almost always be on fire!

  • Water Temp: 78-84

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Very interesting 2 part trip Sat afternoon/night!! A doctor from a well-known eastern university was my client. We headed out of the zoo known as the narrows and headed up the lake to Big Island. We started spooning and drop-shotting around the few bait-balls we found. We put 3 nice bass in the boat (average 2 1/2 lbs) along with several other that realized they are now 3 inches long and can attack a 5 inch spoon. My, those Blade Runner spoons work on all size bass!! We worked 10 or 15 spots on and off shore. For some reason I picked up a Senko rod and threw a #301 5" Senko to a steep bank. The sun had just gone down when I got nailed immediately - and I mean NAILED!! After 3 or so minutes and 3 jumps, we boat a gorgeous 6 lb 10 oz largemouth. Where did she come from?? I started him fishing a 7" power worm - my favorite Berryessa worm. I thought I would throw my favorite Storm Chug Bug to see if there was any topwater action. There wasn't except for the next pig that exploded on it and soon broke my line. My favorite bug - gone forever!! Those are probably the best 2 back to back bites I have ever had at Berryessa. Hey - I was batting 500! After dark, the nice lake became the dead sea. We had lots of dink hits and lost one 3 or 4 lbs, and then nothing! Totally dead. Not sure I have ever seen the night bite there totally dead. As we left, the last quarter moon was rising which may have got the bite going some. This time of year with very warm water, the bite often starts at 2 or 3 in the morning.

Tips: Look for the shad balls and you will find some willing bass. Most of these shad eating bass are the 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 - 4 pound bass. I think the bigger bass will still go after a big topwater bait, buzzbait, swimbait, jig, or as in my case - a Senko. Hard to pass up that spoon bite however - the fastest way to put a bunch of bass in the boat! This is the time of year you need to hunt for the bait and the bass. Lots of new off-shore structure is available for the first time in decades. Happy hunting!!!

  • Water Temp: 76 to 82

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: This past Thursday Rick and I headed out at first light. My game plan was to go directly to the vineyards and spend most of the day fishing there but the water was pretty choppy so I had to make some changes and we went to the back of the ski school. It was a good choice the water was like a mirror. I wanted to try this new top water lure called a "Whopper Popper" it had good action but no results will definitely try it again. There was no activity of any kind so I decided to go towards the dam and work the narrows. After catching small bass I felt that we should head to another area. We worked the east side from the ranch house to the vineyards the bass were jumping all around us but wouldn't bite. We were in 4 to 6 feet of water and could see them but no reaction to whatever bait we tried. We went past the boy scout camp where the trees come out of the water and the water turned a putrid green color something I had never seen at Lake Berryessa before. At this point we had not one fish in the live well I said to myself enough is enough I am going to let my instinct take me to the right spot. I headed to the west side and believe it or not within an hour and a half we had limited out with bass from 2.5 to 4.5 pounds (see photos)!!!!! The lesson for this day is never give up. We had a great successful day. 'til next week...................................................................good fishing!!!!!!

Report: I took out Kevin his wife Linda and their young daughter Kathrine for the day. We had a fun day with Kathrine catching the largest fish of the day weighing just under 4 pounds (see photo). Yesterday I went out with my fishing club "YBAC" for salmon on the "Wacky Jacky" out of Fisherman's Wharf. We caught 10 salmon for 17 people and Pete who complained about his spot on the boat caught 4 of the 10!!!! Back to Lake Berryessa I have been told that there have been bass ranging from 3 to 4 pounds seen near shore which makes me think there might be another spawn by the full moon. Top water lures have been working very well for me in the last few weeks and I enjoy fishing that way. 'til next week....................................................good fishing!!!!

  • Water Temp: 76-79

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: I guided an adult father-son duo yesterday for their first Berryessa experience. I didn't expect to bite to be real good - mostly because of the recent very cool summer weather, nippy in the mornings. And - it wasn't real good! We hooked two quality bass however. The dad broke one off - probably because of putting too much pressure on her. I saw a glimpse of her - 4 or 5 lbs I think. We fished the narrows early in the morning with no results. Went out to the main body - fishing off-shore structure in a slight, cool north breeze - but a beautiful day! Just couldn't get anything going except for his lost fish, so I decided to fish them near the shoreline weedbeds. Finally dad lands a nice 14-15 inch smallie along with a smaller one, using an Aaron's Magic 6" Robo worm. I had started using a similar color 6" Robo - but nary a bite. Finally - at 12:30 - I get this savage hit in the middle of the weedbed, 3 feet of water, and this thing bolts out to deep water. And I mean I am holding on for dear life! After a line tangle and surviving a tremendous gill-rattling jump (she looked 10 lbs!!), we got a 5 lb 2 oz largemouth in the net after a several minute battle. She must have had a good spawn - not much belly - but LEAN an' Mean!! I would have rather me lose mine and dad land his, but it is what it is. A plug for Gami EWG hooks - my size 4 hook was not in a hook shape when we removed it. Twisted and bent - still held the bass - amazing! They had another bite or two while I tried the spoon bite again. It produced a 4 1/2 inch smallie on a 5" Blade runner spoon. How's that for insult!! At least I have seen a few quality largemouth caught this year at Berryessa. In fact, the overall size of all bass species at Berry has been above average I think.

Tips: Wonder if I should give up night fishing? The quality of some of the day bass for clients - and me - has been great this past few months!! As you probably know, the main ramp at Markley Cove is now out of the water, so plan on a little more time to launch. The low water ramp is very good however - a little steep. I think we just hit the lake at a down time - a typical event after the post-spawn feed. Summer bass always seem to be more active in a steady weather pattern. Summer storms moving up from the south have always turned off the bite in my experience - especially at Clear Lake. Weather this last week has not been what we need for a stable summer bite. Things should return to normal this weekend - good luck!

    Report: FISHING WITH SID

The weather at Lake Berryessa is HOT HOT HOT and so was the fishing. Top water turned on this past week. Surface water temperature was 80 degrees. I fished in the back of a cove where there were no other boats and the water was like glass. I only used top water lures and did extremely well. The day before I took Mark out and asked Albert if he wouldn't mind joining us. Mark caught two nice bass in the Narrows in a short span of time. I would have liked to continue fishing in that area but the boat traffic was heavy with tubbers and skiers so I decided to look for a calmer area. I found a nice cove where the water was fairly shallow and calm and I felt it could be a good spot. Between Albert and myself we taught Mark how to cast and Albert showed him how to cast a chugger and when it hit the water it got whacked hard and they brought in another good size bass (see photo). On another trip Lucy caught the fish but didn't want to hold it (see photo) you're never too young to go fishing. Now is a good time to book a guided fishing trip the weather is great and so is the fishing. 'til next week.............................................good fishing!!!!

Report: Hot berryessa Saturday night just to check out the night bite. Well given the lack of a moon and any other light source it proved quite challenging to move around from spot to spot but we made due. Fishing was definitely not what I had hoped but we did manage about 15 between the 2 of us. Jigs and drop shot worked for my buddy and jigs and top water for me. The main lake points seemed to hold more fish than any of the bays and I never made it far up the river so not sure how that bite was.

Tips: Make sure you have a spotlight and plenty of batteries. If you can wait till there is more moon for light the lake is low and there are island tops everywhere and not all are marked

Report: I spent most of Memorial Day weekend fishing with friends. On Saturday I took Bob and his lovely wife Kitty out and we had a wonderful time (see photo of Kitty and her largest fish). On Sunday I took out Bryan and his son Jordan who was very excited to catch some fish. We started off in the Narrows and almost immediately Jordan had a bite he reeled it in and his Dad netted it. Unfortunately it was not a keeper size and try to explain to Jordan who thought that it was huge that we had to throw it back because it was too small. We went through this a few more times before he landed a really nice bass which was 14.5 inches and he measured it himself to make sure he was so happy. Before lunch he and his dad caught seven keeper bass (see photos). During lunch I snorkeled in the cove where my son was bbqing and I noticed that in each patch of grass there were hundreds of fry (baby bass) using it as shelter. After lunch Jordan wanted to take Megan out to show her how to catch bass. Once again he was very successful (see photos). This past Saturday (May 31st) I took Albert and Ron out for a few hours. We went towards the dam and we started catching fish. The most exciting part of the day was when Albert was using the Zara Spook which is a top water lure and at three different points he had large bass roll over on the lure. We put some Procure Scent on the lure and this time this 3.5 pound bass held on to it as Albert reeled it in and Ron did a good job of netting it. As we were heading in on the west side Albert got whacked hard on a silver and blue Speed Trap covered with scent and landed a 3 pound trout (see photos). 'til next week....................good fishing!!!!!!!

Report: Had a great 5 hr trip with a grandpa - grand daughter team this morning. That combo was a first for me! Her husband couldn't make the trip. She started off with 2 very nice spotted bass - combined weight almost 6 1/2 lbs!! Grandpa only landed one - but a beautiful spotted bass at 3 3/4 lbs - wow! She caught several largemouth up to near 4 lbs, of course, all spawned out. Just before we quit, I made a few casts with a morning dawn Robo worm. The bite had really slowed after 12 pm. I just got nailed on the Robo - about 15 feet deep - and she netted a 5 1/4 lb largemouth for me after quite a battle. One never knows how these things happen!

Tips: Grandpa is 80+ years old - we should all hope that we can cast like him at that age! He was amazing. She was casting well also. After some casting tips from me, she was REALLY casting well - fun to watch. We just stayed in the narrows because of the shorter time limit. We found bass on off-shore ledges, steep points, and off-shore flats. The average size was even better than a guide trip I had last year at this time. Our 5 best were pushing 18 lbs. The best bite was on 6" Robo worms. One nice largemouth on a Senko and one on a jig. I tried some topwater but it really was too late by the time we got going. I was hoping they would be able to get some surface action, but hey - one does what the bass want - and they wanted worms! Most bites were about 20 feet and the water visability is about 5 to 8 feet. Great people - great trip!!

Report: We hit the water on Saturday for our second trip to Berryessa. We started in Ski Club cove and my nephew hooked up pretty quick with a small spot. About 6:30 I caught the big fish of the day, a 4 lber, on a black and red buzzbait. My dad caught a dink on a spook and that was the end of the topwater bite for us. We picked up a few more dinks back in the narrows on shakey heads and then moved out to the vineyards around 11:00. The bite was slow, but we caught 4 fish between 2 1/2 and 3 lbs on green pumpkin senkos with split shot weights about 2 1/2 feet above the hook (lazy man's carolina rig!).All in all it was a fun day and my best 5 (which is all the fish I caught that day) went about 12 1/2 lbs.

Tips: Not sure I can give many tips as we really didn't get into them too well and I'm still learning the lake. I think you can catch fish on whatever you have confidence it at this lake so just go out there and chuck and wind and have fun!

Report: Went out late afternoon on Friday with Bob. He wanted to try out the rod and reel that he had picked up at a garage sale. He used a lipless crankbait with a feather tail for his first cast and he got smacked hard and thought he was stuck. I told him to keep reeling and he was having a hard time so I helped reel it in. It turned out to be a nice size pike (see photo). His next catch was a nice bass and he was happy with his new rod and reel. Saturday I went out on my own and it was a little windy so I headed out to the back of the Monticello Ski School where I hoped I would be sheltered from the wind. I spent most of the day there and caught a total of 28 fish of which only 8 were keeper size. I really enjoyed myself even though I didn't catch any real size bass. I'm looking forward to Memorial Day Weekend. 'til next week.................................................................................good fishing!!!!!!!!!
