Report: Ran up for the afternoon, launched at redbud, wind blowing good. Found great fishing in protected coves. Good crank bite in water 5-15 feet near docks. Great flip bite near tules and docks using sencos. Overall good fishing 40 fish all keepers up to 6lbs.
    City: Napa

Tips: After sunset, flip tight to cover. Find protected coves when the wind blows you off the lake.

Report: took acouple girl friends out, they had no idea what they were doin, had to spend hella time trying to teach them how to cast. So we actually started fishing the south end along some docks at about 11am, we were throwing cranks out, we only got 4, the fish really arent hitting it hard at all, they just swim with it. I regretfully forgot to bring my soft plastics with me, cuz i saw hella fish out there caught on worms, brush hogs, and senkos.

Tips: brush hogs, and senkos, thats all i can say, and get there early. good luck

Report: Yes, the bite is still ON at Clear Lake! We arrived at Redbud before sun up and waited for some light before blasting off. It was really windy and the water was very rough. We started not far from the ramp looking for some top water action, but no luck. My buddy was tossing a crankbait and landed 2 keepers right away. We headed toward Jago and caught several more on cranks, still no top water action. We later fished some deep water docks and caught several on drop shots, cranks, senko and carolina rig. Headed in around 1:30pm. Overall we caught over 30 fish up to 4 lbs with the best 5 close to 15 lbs. Nearly all the fish were keepers. We also saw some other anglers catching fish on jigs and senkos. Everyone we saw on the water was catching fish and a variety of baits.
    City: Rohnert Park

Tips: Fish the deep water docks where you have at least 15' depth nearby. Rocky areas out produced the tully areas. Crankbaits down to 10'. If you see fry or baitfish near the docks, fish that area thoroughly and you will be rewards. The bass are very fat and healthy.

Report: Another boring report from Clear Lake! I took three people again yesterday (if I guide one again, it will be lonely!) and fishing was about the same as Tues except the bass ran a little larger. Strange since the water was flat the whole trip. Wind usually produces bigger bass. The numbers were down a bit, catching only 37 - I can't believe I said that!! We also caught 6 or 7 under 12". I always try to zero in on larger bass for my clients and for the second trip in a row we had a limit of over twenty pounds (20-3). I like the consistancy but can't seem to get a trophy bite lately. One of the fellows from Texas (near Lake Fork) had to come to Clear Lake to catch his biggest bass ever at 5-9. He used the red shad Dead Ringer most of the time for an 18 lb plus limit himself - he was a happy young man. One of the fellows was drop-shotting an 8" Dead Ringer and caught mostly 3 to 4 lb fish. We Carolina- rigged large worms, trying to attract larger bass. When it slowed down around noon, we got out the Yamamoto Kreature baits and had an instant hot bite. Wow! Again, we Carolina-rigged these. Want a hot color - try any color!! We used #208, 221, 222, 301, and 330 - they all worked. The crank bite really slowed down for my boat except early in the morning. Jigs are still working very well too. We fished north and south of the narrows again, and this time in Horseshoe Bay. Lots of bass there!!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: A suggestion for fishing Yamamoto Kreature baits. If you have a 1 to 3 pound bass on, I would worry about getting you Kreature back in the boat more than the bass. They don't last too long - maybe 2 to 4 fish. If you have an 8 pound bass on - forget the Kreature!!!!

Report: I took a boyfriend-girlfriend and his dad to Clear Lake yesterday for some good fishing (I hoped)! We were greeted with some early morning wind which surprised me and made guiding three a little more difficult. We actually started off a little slow in numbers and caught some smaller bass than I had seen for awhile. That was the only thing new - other that that the same baits worked - cranks, jigs, and split-shotting 8" Dead Ringer worms. I thought that might produce a bigger bass than drop-shotting. It did! We found red shad to be the best color. We fished several areas north and south of the narrows and did well for bass up to 3 1/4 lbs. I had given up on catching anything real decent until dad set on a fish at 1 pm with his red shad worm and it didn't come to the boat very quick. That was because she weighed 5 lb 11 oz - maybe his biggest bass ever. Thing were looking up and at 1:20 I set on my Weapon jig - Mad Man craw combo for a 4-2, right where I caught the 4 1/2 last week. Since the girlfriend caught the biggest at a previous Amador trip, the boyfriend had revenge on his mind. I was starting to put things away at the end of the trip while he still threw a crankbait (Norman deep little N). He hooked one that just headed out to sea. That is so exciting because one just doesn't know how big a crank fish is for awhile. She turned out to be 4 1/4 - not a monster but sure give us a good limit in the last hour - 20 1/4 lbs. Who needs to get up early, har?! We ended up with 50 to 55 bass - lost count!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: I broke my own rule yesterday when guiding three people and let the two younger ones crank at the same time. They are very good casters and are very careful. While the crank bite is still good, I think it has slowed down as far as the size of the bass is concerned. Because of the water color, most of the bass are quite shallow. This also may be because there is more oxygen in shallow water. Had a new event in my boat - the young man had snagged up one of the crankbaits, so I gave him a brand new Norman crank. In the first few casts he hooks a big bass that breaks the lip where it meets the body. The bass didn't get hooked good so the lure floated up. There was the floating lure about 10 feet behind the floating lip attached to the line. That was a strange sight! Would love to have sighted the fish - we sure heard it!!

Report: Well Mr. Hemphill filled you in on the weather side of things. Sunny, warm and a little windy. We used T-Rigged (1/2oz) plastics for my all time best of 29 lbs for 5 fish with a kicker of 11.02 lbs!!! Focus in the 10-12 foot range on tule points. It was my first time on the lake so I don't know exactly where we were, but were around the rattlesnake island area. 6 inch senko rootbeer

Tips: 6-12 feet is where the active fish were.

Report: I have had some great guide trips in the last 2 weeks up hear, but who hasn`t. Some top water very early in the am then switching to cranks. Most of the better fish have been the suspended working bait out away from the bank. Worms and jigs are just on fire working them along breaks and deep docks.
    City: Sacramento

Tips: Just go do it. Enjoy the great fishing even if they are not the 5 pluslb. fish you want. Those are still there to. They all have an 8 lb. attitude.

Report: All I can say is WOW!! I've been living up here on Clear Lake 1/2 time for the past year and have enjoyed some tremendous fishing in that time. But this last week has been "the BOMB"!! Had a 50+ fish morning on 8/7,caught 28 from the beach at Kono Tayee while drinking coffee w/ my neighbor on 8/8(all crankbait fish from 1 to 4 lbs). Came back 8/12 and found concentrations of bigger fish and was able to coax them w/ lipless cranks and big worms to 5.2 lbs. My girlfriend arrived 8/13( Ijust now realized it was on Friday the 13th!!) and I took her to some rock piles and ledges that produced 20+ -all over 2lbs up to 4.8#s(all on big worms) from 7:15 PM till 9:00 PM!! We could do no wrong. 8/14 we got up lazily and missed the topwater window but got right into fish drop shottin' and Texas riggin' 8-10" Power Worms. Our best fish(out of 30) for the morning was a 5.8#er. Went in for lunch, watched the Giants win in Philly then headed backout for a couple of very exciting hours from 5-7. We found a spot holding BIG fish-we boated 3-5 lb fish one after another(7 fish) and then the HAWG hit. I'm embarrassed to say I did not get to weigh or photograph this rascal because I tried to lip him at the boat(instead of waiting 30 seconds for my gal to get the net) and popped off.He was an easy 10 #s(I've got one on the wall and have caught 3 other fish over ten) and impatience got the better of me. Sadly we have to pack it up today but have to be thankful for some of the best fishing of the year!! This lake is so healthy and vibrant right now -schools of shad, hitch and silversides are thick as can be. Most fish we caught had Big bellies on them.
    City: Lucerne

Tips: Rockpiles and rocky points from 4- 20 ft.Drop shot, senkos, big dark worms and crank baits are the order of the day.Larry's right-it has slowed down recently but the QUALITY has improved!!
    Tigh lines to you all!!

Report: Spent 5 days fishing at Clear Lake. Had a wonderful time, and the fishing wasnt half bad either. Went out with Larry Hemphill on the 18th as he posted and caught some nice fish. I ended up catching about 115 fish myself during our stay and with my girlfriend and dads fish added we had around 210 fish. For the lake being in a slow phase compared to a few weeks ago, this is pretty dang good. Anyways the best part was on my last night, i hooked on one of my 1/4 oz orange jigs (after loosing about 10 others to the rocks) with a frog trailer and thunk, i felt the thunk and weight of a fish, i set the hook and she raced for the surface, jumping clear out of the water and thrashing her head. I about cried since i had lost a 7 pounder the night before the same way. But this fish stayed on. Within about 30 seconds i had an audience of about 20 people watching me fight this hog. After about 3 good runs out to sea i was about to get her close enough to grab, not having a net. I grabbed the fish and pulled the giant out. Hearing about 20 different "oh my gods" and "oohs and awws" i felt like a star for a moment. I grabbed my scale and put her up, a perfect 9 pounds 0 oz. My past personal best was only a 4.5 so this doubled it and was a perfect finish to my week. Since my girlfriend had just left to get some drinks i had nobody to take a picture, but a couple boats passing by saw the hog and a man was nice enough to hop on the DOCK and leave his family for a moment to lend me a hand. Took some great pics and revived her for a couple minutes then let her go.
    City: Rancho Cordova

Tips: Just to show you dont need a bass boat to catch big fish if you know what to do. All of these fish were caught on a specific spot at the Konocti resorts dock, with the exception of the trip with Larry Hemphill. And in response to the post below, are you sure that 21 pound fish was a bass, sounds like a carp to me. 21 pounds is very close to the world record. The lake record is only just over 17 pounds. And for a bass to take stink bait is odd.

Report: CAGHT 50 + FISH THREE TO SEVEN LBS. AROUND ROCK AND DEEP WATER. THIS BITE YOU CAN TAKE TO THE BANC
    City: San Francisco

Tips: look for rocks, throw worns 7" to 10" long, Crawdad color black stripe down the back model A bomber medium diver. Right up on the bank just like spring time fishing around deep water. This is real strange for this time of the year, let's injoy this golden time of bass fishing.

Report: went fishing today at clearlake because i got tired of reading all your reports. but wow i cant belive how many fish a caught, i mena yes there were a lot of small ones but it was so much fun just catching fish. i started at 6am in shallow cove north of redbud. nearly every cast i caught a fish off of my pumpkin colored senko. then switched to a top water frog and grabbed me a 6 pounder.
    City: santa rosa

Tips: pumpkin or white senko at anytime of the day. weedless top water frog early just run it right on top of the gross stuff, also run a buzz bait as early as possible.

    Water Temp: BATH TUB

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: I took my 2 1/2 year old out again 8/11 to see if I could match what we did on 8/1 (45 fish) but we did not even go half way, we landed 16 fish from 1-3 lbs, all of my docks that were loaded with fish were either gone or not biting, instead of 5-8 fish per dock it was 1-3 fish per dock. I started out with 4 & 6 inch MM II Roboworms drop shotting and when that would not produce I went with the closest color to that in a Senko. Funny thing was I caught smaller fish on the Senko than on the drop shot rig, so much for the bigger bait bigger fish theory. There were no dead bait fish when I went a week ago but there is a die off going on now, I think they are hitch but not shad, the shad are huge in clear lake but these fish are tiny but if a bass eats million of tiny fish he's full look at a whale. I spoke to 2 guys in a new Ranger and they had 40 between the 2 of them and thats pretty good but I had 45 by myself last week. You know your spoiled when you catch 16 footballs and your still not happy.
    City: SAN JOSE

Tips: jigs, worms, senko's in red, purple or brown will work. Any shade of purple in a worm has worked for me because when I ran out of MM II I just through any worm that had purple in it and it produced but not quite as good as the MM II or MM III.

Report: Well, somebody has to break the news - Clear Lake has slowed down! Catching 74 today in 5 1/2 hours is just not up to what happened two weeks ago - of course when I was guiding at Berryessa when the fishing was great at Clear Lake! If this was a slowed day, wow - I bet the fast days were really something! I had a real treat today - fishing with a tournament buddy since I was already there. I let him run the electric and I just enjoyed life and my sore arm from setting the hook so much. Fishing in the back of my boat was fun!!! We fished all over the south end but did find some good schools of bass. We caught them mainly on crankbaits, jigs, and dropshotting. The 10" Power Worm again was a winner as it was yesterday. I ran out of black so I went to red shad and that worked just as well! We both fished jigs and got quality bass but I wanted to try to get better quality, so I added a Mad Man craw to the back of my 1/4 oz brown/orange Rattlin' Weapon jig and I got 2 around 3 1/2 and big fish for the day at 4 1/2 lbs. The action on cranks around 10 am was nearly unbelieveable - my partner I think landed 7 in 8 casts! He was hot!! We were targeting suspended bass rather than ones on the bottom. I don't want to say more because of his tournament responsibilities. We wound up with 18 1/2 lbs for the five biggest. Yesterday I guided a gentleman for his first time on Clear Lake and we found the fishing good for awhile, but with no cloud cover (we had some of that today with a breeze) and flat water it got a little tough. The crank or frog bite wasn't as good as last week. Unfortunately, he got lost in the morning and we had to start 45 minutes later and that hurt our numbers I'm sure. I remembered a previous trip when I started later and had gone to the 10" Power Worm. History repeated itself and the bass up to 4 pounds were all over it yesterday. He caught 5 in a row up to 3 pounds on the big worm. They were still hitting it in the afternoon. Jigs were good too. I got four hits on a white spinnerbait - two BIG bass - but they wouldn't really take it. Amazing. We wound up with 22 in the boat and about 42 left in the water - lots of missed fish. Today they were much more aggressive with a breeze. Fun, fun, fun!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: I totally agree with Curtis's recent report about night fishing. I went out for 2 1/2 hours last night (did you expect me to sleep?!) and had three hits - no fish! For those fans of my carp theory - not a single carp rolled until I left at 1 am. I'm sure the bite - if there was one - was after 1 am. I just fished around Rattlesnake and there was no fish movement at all. Hot weather can change fish patterns in a hurry. While the day fishing is still wonderful, the numbers of big fish are down. There are still occasional lunkers, but they are hard to find. With fishing like this - who cares! All these bass pull like lunkers!!

Report: Had to go try Clear Lake because of all the great reports I'd read here and elsewhere. Launched out of Red Bud at 5:47AM Sunday morning- took my pal Scott along to see if he could break his jinx at this lake. We launched just ahead of a small club tourney (maybe 20 boats) and they were all careful as they passed by my aluminum Fisher that only goes about 29 MPH. Thanks guys- you have a nice club. Anyway we started at a fairly deep rocky point with fish busting like crazy all around us. Tried a spook and a Lucky Craft chart. shad LV500 and didn't get a bite. Grabbed my trusty pig n jig and started in 12' deep and worked in to about 3 or 4 feet before I got my first bass- 14" and chunky. All of the 39 bass we caught were healthy and well fed. Less than 3 min. later Scott got his first bass ever from my boat- a 14" also on a senko. The next one for me was 15.5" and my third was 17.5" and went 2lbs 10ozs also on the jig. Scott's 2nd fish made our day. He sets the hook on another senko fish and it rolls on top about 35-40" out but we are lookin' directly into the sun. Scott fights it for 5 min. and it makes 3 hard runs before he can get it to the side of the boat. It's a catfish- about 13-15 lbs. and maybe 28-30" long. I put on a glove and stuck my hand in it's mouth- well 4 fingers anyway. I had my thumb pinching it's lower lip. We sliced the hook off with pliers- it was not moving at all. Scott was reaching for the scale when it did a huge flop against the side of the boat and shook itself free- I felt pretty bad- his best fish ever and we didn;t even get a picture. We could have tried to net it but the way they roll around it would have ruined the net- the net is not that big. We got a few more bass and then moved to another rocky area. This spot was a small submerged island and I gave Scott his first dropshot lesson. He picked it up right away. We tossed 6" red worms- Robo for me- Magic for him. Here we were getting a bunch of 2 lb. fish and a few 8-10" ones mixed in. Tons of baitfish on top too. We moved over to a 3rd spot to see if we could get into some of the 3-4 lb. fish and we found some but mostly 1.5 to 2 lb.ers. Scott was using his dropshot to get most of his and I was using my double rig. A 1/2 oz. football head with a Yama spider grub with a mosquito hook 12-14" up the line with a red 4 or 6" roboworm. I got 2 or 3 on the grub and 5 or 6 on the worm. This area- another small rocky island with deep docks right next door was awesome from 11;30 'till about 3 PM. We each got 2 more at Shag Rock- 2 on chart. cranks and 2 on the pig n jig. All in all an enjoyable day- wished we could have stayed 'till dark instead of leaving at 4:45PM.
    City: napa

Tips: GO GO GO! Keep moving around "till you find some 3 plus fish and then fish the area completely! And like Jason says " Take lots of (red) worms!!"

Report: Fished the late afternoon , night and Sunday the 8th. The fishing has slowed down to about 1/3 over the past 3 weeks. The water has turned a tea colored brown since last weekend. Don't know if this had antything to do with the bite slow down. I did not catch any fish after dark and quit at 11:30pm , too long a week at work. The moon came out about 12:30 so perhaps the bite turned on the second part of the night. Sunday produced about 20 or so keepers but unlike the past 3 weeks I had to work a bit for these.
    City: Sacramento

Tips: The fish I had been on moved a little deeper and seemed a bit more scattered. 15-27 feet. The crawfish color that wound up in my live well are orange with a little red and tan. Drop shot fat boy minnows in pearch about 12 inch's up worked best. A few jig fish, 2 crank bait fish, nothing on top. Biggest fish 3.4 lbs. Gotta pre fish the Delta so I will not be back to Clear Lake for awhile. There were alot of boats this last weekend and it would be nice to hear how everyone else did.

Report: If any of you readers are contemplating on getting out to Clear Lake, get there ASAP!!
I had the pleasure of hitting the Lake with guide Len Kovats of Wheatland. He said he would put us on some fish and boy did he deliver that promise. We started off in Jago Bay first thing in the morning. Within the first hour we had a limit that went about 18#'s. Wow was the bait on. A chartruse blade and a brown jig was the ticket. Next we headed over to Sunshine shore. Within ten minutes we had a pair of five pounders in the boat, all out of less that two feet of water, unbelievable. Next we fished Red Bud. It was hot too! Three and four pounders just seemed to jump in the boat. He hit Windflower pt. and got on to a pretty good pattern of four and five pounders on both the jig and a deep diving crank. We also fished Henderson pt. where the crank bite was HOT!! Every five casts or so were were pullin in three to four pounders. Got a nice 6#+ out of an off shore rock pile by Rattlesnake island. We ended the day back in Jago Bay where we cranked the hell out of them. Wow what a day!! We ended up with the best five going 27#. Too many fish to count. We were culling 4.5# fish. I know those four and five pounders aren't much (What Clear Lake can normally produce), but I never tire of catching those, they fill a day nicely. Great fishing, Great guide, great day! Thanks Len, it is definately a day for the books. After a day like that, I am still left with one question though, When can we go again??
If anyone is interested in a guided trip to Clear Lake with Len please e-mail me and I can pass on the information. Thanks-now go rip some lips!
    E-MAN
    City: Yuba City

Tips: Focus on rocks!(expecially around reeds and grass) and gravel bottoms. The wind was blowing (surprise) and the fish were within 1'-10' of the wind blown shore. (Key) A medium retrieve on both the blades and crank seemed to work the best. Throw a jig!! Brown or black-doesn't matter. We paired them with many different Yamamoto grubs and caught fish all day. Len also had a little secret thing he does-but you'll have to talk to him about that! GOOD LUCK.

Report: WOW! Clear Lake is one the best fisheries in the country without a doubt. First time back to Clear Lake since April and I don't know why I stayed away for so long. Fished from 6am to 9:30pm, drop shotting and throwing blades was all it took today. I lost track of how many fish I caught after the first couple of hours, I estimate 65 to 80 fish for the day. Why forearms are still a little sore. Big fish of the day was a 9.0 lb brute drop shottin, with a 7.0 caught just before her. Majority of the fish where in the 4.5lb range to 2.0lbs. A couple of dinks mixed in. Great day on the water, i'll be back next week.
    City: Davis

Tips: Bring plenty of worms and nothing less than 10lb test spinning tackle, the fish are tough footballs in Clear Lake.

    Water Temp: 80

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: I did a 5 hour trip with a nice couple that had never fished the south end. They were only familiar with the north end but wanted to learn about structure in the south. We fish much of the time but also spend a lot of time looking at the meter and visiting several areas. We started off with crankbaits, dropshotting and jigs - all produced. I found the parrott color crankbait (blue/chartreuse) to be their favorite color and it produced 3 bass from 3 to 4 pounds. Spinnerbaits did not produce. Near the end of the trip we worked some frogs and my first blowup of the year was a 5 to 6 pounder - that missed the frog of course. My client was using a white Snag Proof frog but soon switched to my favorite green which was working better. We had 12 to 15 blowups, but only landed three to 3 pounds. Some of the bass wern't too big I think. I enjoyed watching these nice people catching bass offshore for the first time as they only has previously worked tules. We fished the Rattlesnake area, narrows, Konocti Bay, and a little north and south of the resort. We landed around 15 - should have done better but in my clients own words: "I've never lost so many"! I told him he wasn't allowed to do that with a guide, har! We did go for quality and our best five were 16 1/4 pounds. Beautiful weather and good fishing!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: As was mentioned previously, the algae is gone for now - just very stained water. The bass we caught were not deep - even on rockpiles or ledges. While crankbaits are producing larger bass, don't forget your brown/orange jigs. The bass were thumping them!! I threw one out there, let it set while talking to my clients, and nearly had the rod jerked out of my hand. Lets hear it for deadsticking!! You many need to stick to 1/4 oz to keep from snagging all the time!
