Report: Sunday I fished with the two J's. We headed out at first light (it was cold!!!) across the lake
towards the ranch house heading to the vineyards. I put my boat on automatic pilot and she (J1)
caught her first bass on crankbait. She fished the front of the boat casting top water with no
success. Meanwhile J2 was fishing off the back of the boat with jerk bait and landed a nice size
bass. When we got to the point he fished with a River2Sea crawdad and had a fish on his line without
knowing it because it was swimming towards the boat he landed that one easily. The vineyards, being
the lake is so low, did not show a lot of activity. As we crossed towards Big Island we found a lot of
birds and balls of bait. The fish were all between 35 and 45 feet deep. As we headed back towards
home we stopped at a spot I call the 'crappie tree' and put out two markers. We fished between the
two markers and ended up with some large crappies. As J1 was jigging for crappie she landed a nice
salmon. The day before Albert and I had fished this same spot and every drift we had picked up fish.
Dario and his family wanted to catch catfish. For the first hour or so he was a little disappointed but
after his next two fish which were a fifteen pounder and a ten pounder he had a smile from ear to ear.
He used hotdogs for bait. It was a good fishing weekend and we ended up catching a hodge-podge of
different fish which made it interesting. 'til next week......................................good fishing!!!!!!

    Water Temp: 68-70

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Don Paganelli and I guided 4 clients from Colorado yesterday and found the bite to be fair until about noon. The sun was bright, the lake was calm and very warm for mid-Oct. We found most of the bass suspended and the bait deep. The topwater bite was pretty good in the early morning as long as you could find shadows. The drop-shot bite was non-existant yesterday, while it had been pretty good for Rick Tietz and I during our trip on Tuesday. We used Robo worms in MMIII and salt river craw colors later in the day. I really don't know how many we caught total - about 20 to 25 bass. We fished the narrows and the south main body. Big bass was about 2 lbs - not so good.
    City: Yuba city

Tips: Conditions are pretty tough right now - no storms or very cold nights to get the bass movin' and the bait to move to the surface. When one of these events happens the bite will drastically improve.

Report: Went out with my 4 year old today. Weather was great fishing was so so. I had a feeling with the full moon and high pressure it would be. Now I got my escuses out of the way. I stuck with a grass pattern all day and it produced 15 fish up to 3 lbs. Best 5 at 12 lbs. The bigger fish have yet to move up.
    City: Vacaville

Tips: I cought fish on top water, lipless crank, spinnerbait and a diving crank. The topwater produced a better average size while the lipless cought the biggest a nice 3 lb SM. My son cought 3 on his brush hog. The fish were few and far between no area better than the other, flats, points and weedlines. I did notice a ton of fish suspending on bait that the trout were pushing. If the water cools a little more it should take off. They are just not in a fall pattern yet.

Report: Wind made it impossible for me to get out of Capell cove and made it difficult to control the boat with my whimpy 12 volt trolling motor. But hey its better than sitting at home watching football! Did manage a 6 pound catfish on a jig and two 2 lb bass on a sexy shad.
    City: Sonoma

Tips: If the wind stays around, know you not going to get too far if you launch @ Capell, Waves were 4 foot easy. And a 12 volt trolling motor is no match for those 30+ mph winds.

Report: Friday morning I took Roger and his grandsons Austin and Mackenna out for a day of fishing. It was
a cold overcast morning and stayed that way most of the day. We headed out towards the
vineyards stopping along the way at some key points. Mackenna who is eight landed the first
fish which weighted approx. 2.5 pounds. He also brought in the second fish that weighted almost
2 pounds. Austin (who turned 12 that day) landed the third and fourth fish. Both boys did very
well for the day. Roger really didn't get much of a chance to fish since he was busy taking pictures
of the boys reeling in their fish and netting them. That evening I went into my favorite cove which
is slowly drying up and only threw top water with no luck whatsoever. Saturday I went to my cove
again and caught some nice bass on suspended baits by River2Sea and again no hits on top water.
Saturday evening I fished with my buddy Albert for awhile and caught a six pound catfish. Sunday
my friend Steve and I headed out at first light toward the Ranch House. As we trolled towards the
vineyards we tried top water baits along the way with no response at all. Steve caught some bass
with the River2Sea suspended bait which also landed a couple of trout (see photo). Sunday turned
out to be a tough day of fishing. We would see fish break, throw into the boil with no rewards.
Most fish we saw on the screen were suspended. It was still a great weekend of fishing and should
only get better. 'til next week............................................good fishing!!!!!!!!

Report: Took my 4 year old out to check if the fall bite has started. Well it has fished from 0700 to 1230 with 27 fish total all of them running from 1.5 to 3.5 lbs. Nothing real big yet best 5 at 14lbs. Wind made it hard to fish the way I wanted to, also very hard with a 4 year old. So it ended up being a junk pattern day.
    City: Vacaville

Tips: Tried topwater first thing cought a couple SM. Wind came up and tried a crankbait cought 5 LM and SM. Changed over to spinnerbait and that worked then around 10 the bite slowed and cought some on drop shot from 15-30 feet deep. Then I noticed some action on a weedline but the bait they were chasing was smaller than the baits I was throwing. I changed over to a Lucky Craft popper and they just started pounding it. My son did get 4 bass on his mojo rigged brush hog.

Report: On Friday I headed out of Steele Park and at the point across from Spanish Flat I noticed lots of
bait action. I decided the time was right to try some top water lures. I threw a white and
chartreuse chugger and on my third cast towards the rocky shoreline in about ten feet of water I
got smacked by a 2+ pound bass. What a great feeling!!!!!! I love that top water bite. I continued
to work the shoreline into the cove and I continued to land some nice size bass. The bass seem to
be more aggressive to the crankbaits then to the worm that I have been dragging. Saturday I went
out with Albert in the late afternoon. We have been fishing together off and on for the last couple of
weekends and poor Albert was not having too much luck. Well he made up for it Saturday by catching
a 3 pound crappie and I caught an 8.5 pound catfish and Albert was just fed up with me (he loves
catfish) so I told him you can't give up. We stayed at the dock after dark and it paid off big time for
Albert, he ended up landing a 16 pound 11 ounce CATFISH!!!!! (see photo) Needless to say he was
beyond happy he had always wanted to catch at least a 10 pound fish (any fish!!!) so he was thrilled.
Sunday I trolled for awhile with no luck. All in all it was a pretty good weekend and I am just over-
joyed for Albert. Friday I had kept a couple of the bass and I had them in a cooler on ice in front
of my cabin. During the night raccoons helped themselves to a fish feast and didn't leave any for me.
To add insult to injury, they ate the fish on my golf cart and left scales all over the floor. I guess
they needed the fish more than I did and I hope they enjoyed it.

Report: The anglers from Basin Bassmasters had a small tournament with 11 boats. Most the anglers fished the main body and the narrows. Top water baits were the best bait for the day. buzz baits, vexens and pop r's. The big largemouth was a 11.06 on a pop r late morning, caught by Steve Irwin. A 7.00 lb, 5.30 lb, 4.50 lb and some 3's. Drop shot, split shot and jigs did work. Look for humps and bait jumping around and you will find the big bass.

Report: This past weekend was very successful for bass if you trolled. The question
now is where to troll and how deep. Tom and Marie headed toward the east
side of the lake and looked for signs of balls of bait in the water. His fish-
finder showed there was fish activity between 20 to 25 feet down. He used
a pink lady and crankbait to get down deep enough and it worked because he
ended up with two nice limits of bass which included a nice 4+ pounder. My
wife and I went out for a little while that evening but we didn't do as well. My
wife's bass was larger than mine but no real size to speak of. Juan is holding
one of the catfish I caught at the dock by the marina. (see photos)
My fishing tip this week is to first find the bait and target the depth. Water is
still clear. My recommendation is to zigzag from 15 feet to 30 feet until you
find where they are and troll with different depth crankbaits one that goes
around 6 feet down on the shallower side and 12 feet down on the deeper
side of the boat. Please let me know how you did.

Report: Had a good day, three of us landed about 15 throughout the day. We followed the baitfish all along the eastern shore. We caught most of our bass using crankbaits but a couple were taken using dark colored softbaits as well. Great day on the lake, perfect weather, lots of fish, almost no other boats on the lake at all.

Tips: Follow the baitfish, when you find them start throwing crankbaits.

Report: Weather wise lake Berryessa was still Hot, Hot, Hot. It was so hot that I elected
to stay on the dock in the shade which was still Hot!!!! My buddy Albert came to
join me on Saturday and we spent most of the day catching catfish and carp. Our
largest catfish that day was 8.6 lbs on Albert's scale. The fish were busting all
around us. Michelle and her husband came down to the dock to fish with us and she
landed a first for me. She landed a large muskrat which we netted and within ten
seconds it ate through the net completely and was gone. Sorry Albert we know that
was your favorite net!!!! On Sunday I fished at the dock again (another hot day) and
I was joined by Blake and her boyfriend. Her boyfriend said he would show her how to
catch fish and when the score was three to nothing in Blake's favor she told him she
would give him lessons. It was Blake's birthday which may account for her good luck
that day. It was a slow weekend but still a lot of fun. 'til next week.....................

Report: I usually dont fish Berryessa from July - August but my 3 year old wanted to go so what are you going to do but take him to the lake. Went with top water first. Threw a Vixen and Lucky Craft popper over shallow points and rocky banks, nothing going. Moved to the grass and threw a frog and buzz bait still nothing. The whole time my son is dragging a brush hog and nothing going on that. I was amazed by the amount of bait in very only 2-10 feet of water and nothing chasing. Checked out a couple deep point and island tops on the east side went to a drop shot and picked up a couple smallmouth. Went into Putah Creek and fished some walls picked up a couple Largemouth. Decided it was time to just catch fish since the bigger ones were not active and moved down to the narrows for some spots. Finished out the day with 7 more off walls and mud lines.
    City: Vacaville

Tips: If you have to go to Berryessa you are probably better off fishing the narrows. The fish were right up in the mud line, or 30-40 ft on the walls. Around mid September the lake will start improving but for now it looks like it will be pretty tough during the day time. Better at night.

Water Temp: STPLL WARM UP T

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: The last couple of weekends I found that trolling for bass has been the most
productive. Early morning I like to troll in 8 to 10 feet with a minus lure that
dives about one foot and as the sun goes over head I go into deeper water
(20 to 30 feet) and use a deeper diving lure that goes 6 to 10 feet down. The
shallower lure closer to shore. While trolling on my son's pontoon boat with my
daughter-in-law (see photos) our score within an hour was three bass each.
I took our friend Terry and her two sons and daughter out for a couple of hours
on my boat (I have included a photo of my boat for those who have asked me
what kind of boat I use - a Lund fully loaded). We trolled and had a great day
catching bass with the kids (see photo). I spent one evening in my favorite cove
and I decided to only use a top water lure. Within an hour's time I had eight
nice size bass. Bad part of story is that I threw my favorite top water 'chugger'
into about two feet of water where I saw some activity and sure enough a fish
devoured the lure and dragged it to some bushes, my line snapped trying to reel
him in and alas the lure never surfaced. I waited for quite awhile and it never
did come up. I had that 'chugger' for at least twelve years and it caught me
a lot of nice bass even though I have another like it, it's just not the same.

Tips: ENJOY BERRYESSA DAY OR NIGHT FISHIG

    Water Temp: 79-81

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: I had the pleasure of taking Bud Neville of Western Outdoor News to Berryessa for some late afternoon and night fishing, helping him with a story he is going to do on this great lake. Unfortunately, the lake wasn't as great as my previous trip. We worked hard for our 18 or so bass which were mostly on the small size because of the cooler summer weather the past few days. Really good night fishing is alway best when we experience hot days - not days in the 80's. The most disappointing thing was the big blowup I had on a Sammy just before dark. She missed!! I never felt the fish but she was big - moved a lot of water! Our biggest was a nice largemouth at 2 3/4 lbs taken on a MMIII Robo worm. She was not camera shy - jumped several times! All of our night bass were typical cool night type bass up to 1 3/4 lbs. We did quit a little after midnight and the bite might have picked up but I doubt it. The delta breeze never stopped and that moist, cool air is usually the kiss of death for a quality night bite. Berkley Power worms and Robo worms were our best baits. I did hook one on a crankbait about 6 pm near Goat Island but lost it near the boat.
    City: Yuba city

Tips: We did some night fishing around the "former" Berryessa Marina and Rancho Monticello. All was quiet and dark. Never saw another boat or heard the sound of people after dark. Very sad!! Some of you tell me you are interested in my obsevations of carp rolling or other outdoor experiences that are happening when a bite is very good or not so good. Once again, I noticed (and Bud did too) that there wasn't a sound last night. Not a single fish was working, no bird sounds, an occasional frog and one lone muskrat type thing. The lake was simply dead with the heavy air - we even had to put on a jacket. Always interesting to me how consistant this pattern is. On the bright side (at night?!), no smoke and the stars were fabulous!

Report: This past Friday I took Mike and his wife Kathy from Pa. out for a day of
fishing. My game plan was to fish our way to the vineyards. We started
off by trolling a lipless crankbait on one side of the boat and a minus lure
on the other side (closest to the shore). Trolling in about fifteen feet of
water over grass and rocks we hit some bass approx. 1.5 to 2 pound fish.
Mike stood up on the back of the boat and threw a chugger towards the
shoreline. He hit some nice size bass 2+ pounds. He landed a 5.4 pound
bass using brass and glass with a green senko in twenty feet of water at
one of the key points (see photo). Kathy who had never fished before and
wanted to out fish her husband gave it a good try and landed some nice
bass but he out fished her. We had a good time and a very productive day.
Friday evening I met up with my friend Albert B. and we did some fishing
from the dock and caught two catfish a 4+ and a 8 pounder and a few carp.
We had help from some of the kids at the dock (see photo). Sunday I fished
with Tom and his sister-in-law Maria and Anthony. We lost about eight carp
and landed six nice ones. 'til next week...........................good fishing!!!!!!

    Sid,
I am very happy to hear about the progress you have made in your recovery period. I don't know if I ever told you but I have Multiple Sclerosis, which is an uncureable disease which attacks the bodies nervous system. The reason I am telling you this is not for pity or for people to feel sorry for me, I would like to know if you would pass information to your readers about a remarkable new drug which has just been approved and has 27,000 people currently using it. I have met people that couldn't walk, some were on total disability, and some just plain gave up that their was no hope. Well I am happy to say I have met these people and now they are walking without the aid of a cane or walker, the person who was on total disability wants to go to work ( she was in the testing phase of the drug before it came to market, she has taken it for 2 years). Their are at least 8 to 10 more people I have met with amazing stories that should give everyone with Multiple Sclerosis hope. I have just started taking the drug myself and I'm hoping for the best.
The drug is called Tysabri and it is made by a company named Biogen. More information is available at Tysabri.com.
I don't know how you feel about giving this type of information in your newsletter and I will understand if you don't, but I will be happy to answer anybodies questions about Tysabri if it is for them or someone they know who has MS.
That's enough about that, my lures are selling good and I will send you some of my newest creations. I can't think of the worm type you use all the time but I will send you some in Chartreuse Pepper, Watermelon Seed and Purple colors. If you have special colors you would like the tails Email me and I will make them up. Also if you would like to try some with eyes I will do that for you also, please let me know what I can do for you.
Thank You Sid, Your the Best. Ruth Ann says Hi.

Report: Hi everyone!!! This is my first fishing report since before Memorial Day weekend
when I became ill and had to have a quadrupel bypass. Fortunately I am recovering
well and eager to get back to fishing on my own. This past weekend was a full moon
but my family will not allow me to take my boat out yet. My son found a cove in the
Narrows where he beached his pontoon boat and spent the day. Just for fun they put
out a couple of rods with hotdogs for bait and scored seven catfish and three carp.
Saturday my wife and I joined our son and his wife on their boat and headed towards
the same cove. Unfortunatley that spot was taken so we found a similar cove. Using my
wife's secret formula of corn meal and vanilla extract I lay on the back of the pontoon
boat enjoying the sunshine and holding on to the fishing rod. Everyone else was in the
water when I got hit big time. I yelled for help (I'm still a little weak when it comes to
reeling in a big guy) and my daughter-inlaw reeled the fish in for me and my son netted
it. It turned out to be a six pound carp which gave us a great fight on four pound test
line and light rod. When we got back to the marina I stayed at my boat and fished for
awhile. I was joined by Nick and Scott and we had fun catching carp to eight pounds.
I am very proud of Nick. He is ten years old and he caught three good size carp and
his friend Scott helped him net the fish. That evening Nadar and his cousin caught five
catfish no size to speak of on hotdogs. Nick and all his friends caught a carp near the
cabin on hotdogs. My neighbor at the Marina and his father went out to the east side
of the lake today (Sunday) and trolled between 20 and 30 feet using a lure that went
down six to eight feet and caught twelve bass up to 2.5 pounds. Last week using the
same system they caught a five and an eight pounder. Hopefully I will be able to start
using my boat again by this weekend and have some great stories to share with you.

Report: I took an 11 year old future bass pro from Georgia - visiting his aunt and uncle. All four of us had a very nice trip, especially watching the lad land many bass with his very solid hookset. The fishing was good enough in the narrows to spend our day there. The bite was a little slower than previous trips and I felt slower summer fishing has settled in (night fishing being better). He landed 7 or 8, uncle got a few, aunt missed a few, and I landed 6 or 7. We caught all three species but nothing over 2 lbs 3 oz. Couldn't seem to get the drop-shot bites going - caught all of them split-shotting 4 and 6 inch Robo and Power worms. Points were the best structure we found and the fish were about 15 to 20 feet deep.
    City: Yuba city

Tips: I found a few schools of shad but couldn't find any feeding bass in them. They might have hit a spoon but I didn't have any on board. We had a short window of action yesterday - best bite was only about 3 hours - 9 am to noon. Don't know why.

Report: I was able to guide two great guys - experiencing their first night trip. Dad was a senior citizen who had a little trouble getting around in the boat but when he was perched on the back seat of my 520 Ranger - he had NO trouble setting the hook. His son and I were constantly asking: "dad, you have another one?!!"
He would quietly say: "yes, I think so". What a hoot! I lost 5 lbs running to the back of the boat with the net all night!!! If you ever go on a trip with me - grab the back seat - it's hot!! Seriously, it was wonderful seeing him have all that action since he just got over a medical problem and had to postpone this trip previously. We were split-shotting Robo worms in the narrows and main body before dark. Dad wanted to learn to drop-shot and picked it up pretty good but the wind was just too much. Tried topwater some but no success - fish had probably moved deeper and that technique would probably be best at first light. The night bite was pretty good but not great. Again, the 7" black Berkley Power worm is THE bait to use at night at Berryessa. I tried a Yamamoto Kreature bait (black/blue) and it worked too. Dad's best was a 17 1/2" smallie - very skinny after the spawn. I have no idea how many we landed but around 40 give or take a few. Everything we caught - narrows included - were smallmouth and largemouth. The first spot was caught at 1 am and then one more. They were completely out of the picture. Amazing. Getting back to Markley Cove in the dark of the moon with some smoke proved to be a bit of a challenge but got back fine - all of us happy campers!

Tips: The lake level seems to be holding better than I expected. It's dropping but not too fast. We found bass on several flats, running out from shore and a few island tops. Ledges were now producing too. Deep water access is now important. Points produced bass at the 15 to 20 foot level. Thermocline seems to be about 30 to 35 feet. No fish below 40 feet that we saw on the meter. Many fish suspended - that is probably where the spots were.
