  • Water Temp: 58

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Started fishing Sunday night & the wind was brutal for most of the 4 days we fished. We had good #'s but no monsters. Our fish ranged from 3lbs - 7 lbs. with a few dinks thrown in for good measure. Our best limit came on Tuesday night @ 31.8 lbs anchored by a 7.2 lber. We fished south of Konocti Bay & south of Buckingham trying to duck the wind. The one night the wind died for a few hours, the bite turned off. We caught the majority of fish on jigs (Rodstrainer) with single wide beaver trailers. Had a few good ones on swimbaits as well. Landed alot of 5-6.5 lbers. & Ted did his usual "tank a big one at the boat" for the trip! The lake still amazes me & baffles me at the same time! Tuesday we hit a slow spell for a few hours, pulled up on a spot & nailed 7 fish in 7 casts. They ranged 4 -6 lbs. & then that was it, nothing else for the next 30 minutes! Go figure!

Tips: I think with the nice weather moving in, the jig bite should take off. i almost decided to stay another day!

  • Water Temp: 58-62

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Reading the previous report makes me happy that I like to night fish - didn't see another boat after dark. Mike Sperbeck and I hit the lake about 6 pm Fri and immediately each caught our first Senko fish of the year. We found the bite quite good up 'til dark and had a 5 fish limit over 20 lbs. After dark it was hunt and peck - one here, one there. And the bites went from savage hits to just pressure takes. They either wanted a meal, or a tidbit! We worked our way up to the narrows - finding no schools of bass as in previous trips. We did end with a 5 fish limit a tad over 28 lbs and I had big fish at 6 1/2 lbs. Another first for the year - I ended the trip with a beautiful 20 lb channel catfish. You just stand there and hold on to the rod for dear life!!

Tips: We found most bass off the bank at the 10 to 30 foot depth. We did see our first "warming" bass, hanging just under the surface of some docks. They are spooky! We used our usual baits - brown/orange jigs w/Yamamoto trailers, Berkley Havoc baits, and some Netbaits. Did not throw swimbaits this trip. The bite should pop again next week if the weather warms as promised. Overall, many quality bass still seem stationed near deep water - at least in the south end.

  • Water Temp: 53-57

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Jim and I hit Clearlake for the first time this year with high hopes and a somewhat open mind. Fished Saturday mostly in the Redbud arm with not so great success. 5 fish about 17+ for the 5, one up to #6.12. Most of the Tourney guys were up north so traffic was not that big of a deal but there were several places we skipped because there was others there. Sunday we started south and then said what the heck and went north and east. started fishing with the other dozen or so folks in a big flat 4-10 feet throwing the obligatory umbrella rig like everyone else. Fished that end for about 3-4 hours Jim got 1.7 on a dropshot and I got one even smaller on the bama rig. Hit a few spots on the way back then decided to hit Rattlesnake area, wind kicked up for a couple hours so we went to find shelter. Only managed one more on a senko and off the water around 3. Rumor has it there was 30+ pound bags weighed in. In the 4 hours we were north we saw 50+ boats fish and in that time only saw ONE boat catch a fish. But there are countless places to fish on that lake, we just didn't connect. Fished Texas rig plastic, Senkos, Drop Shot, Jig, Spinnerbait, Rattletrap, Swimbait, Hippo rig (3 arm bama rig), jerkbait, we fished 4 feet to 35 feet in depth, slow and not so slow. multiple presentations docks, weeds, flats, and never figured it out. 2 fish on Senko, 1 on A-rig, 1 spinnerbait, 4 on dropshot.

Tips: oh well, atleast we reported. No tips for from us, we stunk it up.

  • Water Temp: 52-56

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Fished 4 days starting on Sunday 3/17 - Weds. 3/21. Not much happening Sunday & Monday both day & night. Managed 2 in the 6 lbs range plus 11 2.5 - 5 lb range for both days. Tues. started out at 4pm catching a bunch of 2.5 - 3.5 clones on
Texas using Sweet Beavers & Yamamoto Creature baits (watermelon Blk, flake). The rain hit about 7pm & the fishing literally exploded! Managed 13 jig fish all but two going from 6lbs. to 8 lbs. plus nailed a 7.4 & a 6.2 on a crankbait of all things. The rain really activated them I guess. Our first two limits for the night were over 30lbs (34.8 & 30.4) & the third limit went 28.8! Boated over 40 fish, best session I've ever had on the lake! The jig was 3/8 Rodstrainer with Reaction Innovation Sweet Beaver trailer Oxblood! The crank was Lucky Craft Deep Diver 20 Ghost Minnow. went out on Weds. night 11:30 PM trying to dodge the weather. We drilled a 7.75 & an 6.2 right out of the gate & then got blown off the water by the wind. These two were also on the jig! One heck of a trip for us! We fished just south of Buckingham Point, & Konocti Bay in a cove just south of Richmond. Tried Jsgo & Jones first teo daya but it was slow. Sorry for the long post!

Tips: Rock structure for the jigs, & fish very slow. Tues. night water temp stayed steady at 52.4 all night. I really think the crankbait fish came from pure luck. 3/8 jig seemed the way to go, I fished the 1/2 the first few days & only managed 2 fish.

  • Water Temp: 54-55

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: I took 2 client from Montana out yesterday before the rain came - starting about 8 am. Lake was calm, so we started at Indian Island. One of them starts with a great fish - a very large black crappie, using a small Havoc bait. We worked our way up the west side with different baits. I was throwing the usual "Hemphill Special" - my brown/orange jig w/#180 Yamamoto grub. After working Jago with no bites, we moved north. In a spot I have never caught a bass before - but other clients have - I set and boated a nice 7 lb 5 oz bass. A few minutes later a 6 lb 1 oz bass. I immediately rigged one of the fellas with that setup. He did catch one about 2 1/2 lbs. The other gentleman didn't land any but missed 3 or 4 good hits. As the weather starting getting nasty, I did land 2 more 2 pounders on different baits I was demoing (is that a word?) for them. I felt they learned a lot on their second-ever visit to Clear Lake. We had a great time. The few boats that were out of Red Bud all came in the same time we did. Enough of that wind and incoming rain!

Tips: I always have mixed feelings about catching a quality bass when figuring out what baits are best for my clients that day (or night). Again, these guys now understood the fabulous reputation Clear Lake has for quality bass. Neither of them had ever seen a bass over 4 lbs. They said they can hardly wait to take their new confidence to Montana and terrorize those bass! And - they are anxious to fish Clear Lake again in the future!!

Report: Wow! I listening to my own seminar for the Future Pro Tour at Clear Lake Bait & Tackle yesterday afternoon! After that Mike Sperbeck and I launched my Z521 and headed out into the ocean!!! About an hour later, at sunset, I fought a big bass in the howling wind and surf for nearly 3 minutes and Mike finally was able to net my second 9 pounder in 3 weeks - this one barely over 9 by 1 ounce. We didn't know where she was half the time in the rough water!! About 10 minutes later - a 5 1/4 pounder. Both were caught on the "Hemphill Special" - a brown/orange jig w/Yamamoto twin-tail #180 5" grub. Another great trip I thought - not so!! We left about 11 pm with 10 bites (that we could feel in the wind) but 5 bass for nearly 32 lbs. I don't think we have ever worked so hard for so few fish - I was dizzy trying to keep the boat in some position to fish. Some of you bay and ocean fishermen know what I am talking about!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: My real point in this report is to thank Vince and the FPT folks for letting me give a literal "warm-up" seminar to the participants. The other speaker and I were trying to give proper tips that the anglers could use during a major cold-front. I hope some of them helped, I hear the lake calmed down some about 3 am. I hope so. Very nice group of folks! On our trip, we threw Berkley Havoc baits and Netbait Mad Pacas. I did have another good hit with a D&M Piranha swim jig, but couldn't connect this time. Bass seemed to be at the same depths as last time - 15 to 25 feet. Why do I feel seasick today???

Report: 1st time on the lake this season. Went out on Sunday at 6:00pm & on the third cast stuck a 10lb. 11 oz. toad on a jig! I thought this was going to be lights out, but only managed 2 more bites tanking 2 4-5 lb'ers at the boat. Guess I was rusty! My partner caught 3 3-4 lber's to round out the night. Went out on Monday afternoon fishing Jago & managed 3 fish 2-3.5 lbs. Did a little better at night catching 7 between us in the same range. We did not get the quantity of bites I was looking for, but the quality was good. I think the impending storm had something to do with it, plus I didn't move around as much as I usually do. We had just enough bites to keep it interesting. I plan on coming back in a few weeks when the weather is hopefully more stable. It was cold, but the wind wasn't a factor making it bearable. We fished all south behind Buckingham Point, Konocti Bay, & Jago Bay.
    City: Visalia

Tips: Fish were in the 10 -24 ft range. We managed more bites around rockpiles & fished slowly. Our bites came on jigs, Yamamoto Cut tail worms, Flappin' Hogs, & Brushhogs. Colors were junebug, black with red at night, & wateremelon/red, green pumpkinseed/red at day. The bite was very subtle so we vigilant! The big fish bite was so light, I thought it was a dink ('til I set the hook!)

Report: Mike Sperbeck had a trip to remember for awhile and my wasn't too bad either. Problem is - he caught 16 and I caught 7 - and - he caught the biggest at 7 lbs 11 oz! We started out of Red Bud about 4:30 pm, fishing Jones and Jago Bays where Mike picked up a 5 pounder right away and our only 2 small ones. We fished Wheeler Point with some success as the fish got bigger. I think the big reason for our success is that I forgot the black lights! So - we actually had to feel our non-bites!! About 9 pm we got into a bite that was maybe the best in several years for us. Every bass (about 14-15 were from 5 to 7 3/4 lbs. Amazing! Mike had the biggest and my big one was 6 lbs 14 oz. Mike had 2 more 6 1/2's. No toads lost this trip. They were scattered from 5 to nearly 30 feet. The lack of wind let us feel the very soft bites though a few slammed the baits. After a tally of our best 5, we came up with 34 lbs 5 oz. Maybe leave the black lights home from now on??
    City: Yuba City

Tips: We used several plastic baits in black/red and black/blue. The Netbait craws worked well, along with Berkley Havoc baits. I caught my biggest on my D&M Piranha swim jig. I lost another big one on that bait because she hit right under the trolling motor. Hard to hook at that angle. It was another cold night, but managable because of little or no wind. Remember, the summer afternoon/evening wind patterns should hit Clear Lake around the last week of March. How about some rain??

    Water Temp: 48-50

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Mike Sperbeck and I fished the south end Thursday afternoon. Windy again and difficult to fish. We caught 4 in late afternoon that went a little over 20 lbs. All soft plastic baits - about 15 to 20 feet. I wuz beaten by .01 of a pound!! His biggest was 5.80 and mine was 5.79. Bummer! We fished after dark for about 2 hrs - no bites. Left for McDonalds and some HOT coffee!!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: Sure can't complain about the size of the bass. They are eating something! All 4 bass were caught in a different area - unlike some previous trips. The bites seemed a bit more aggressive this time - probably because the water is a tad warmer - er, less cold!!!

Report: Went over to konocti bay today in search of prespawners. Was suprized at how many fish i spooked out of the tullies. Picked up the jerk-bait rod and instantly got a few interested. I watched a 6+ take my bait! That was it fot sight fishing for the day beacuse the sun went down and i couldent see em anymore. Went back to jones and fished rock piles with jigs and swims and managed a limit. Not bad for 4 hours in winter
    City: lower lake

Tips: Jig bite is defently picking up, just drag it slow and steady. 5 inch swims have been working for me all winter. Have fun!
