Report: Invited my Brother in law and his Brother in law up for a day at Clear Lake and one at CFW. The fishing (minnows) was steady with about 20 for us. Smallest about 2.5# Most in the 3-4 range. On the first spot my Brother in law got his personal best 5+ His previous was a 1.5# Oroville monster. His Brother in law had never caught a bass until he got a 3+ at the 3rd spot we fished. Now the pressure was off me as both had caught bass. Well my Brother in law's Brother in law (huh?) grabbed the largest minnow in the live well and said "I'm going to catch a bit one with this" About 2 minutes later he said "I think I have one" When I heard the drag singing I said yup you do. Well after I saw color, I knew he had bested his PB already as she came in at 10.2#

How's that for your first bass trip? A life time fish in just about 2 hours of fishing!
    City: Roseville

Tips: No brainer, just get some of those great minnows from Jimmy at Clearlake Bait & Tackle, find some rocks in 15-30 feet and hang on!

Report: Since last Friday's bite was pretty good for us, Mike Sperbeck and I decided to try again! This time lady luck (skill!! - LOL) decided to smile on me! We launched out of Red Bud at 4 pm and found post-front wind - quite bad. We moved up to areas we could hide a bit on the west side, catching 5 from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 lbs before dark. We were using small beavers and Berkley Havoc baits. As I tell all my clients - the bite after dark is dead for an hour or so. NOT so last night - at least for me - about time! I was trying a NetBait plastic thing in blue/black color. I missed a nice hit at first. Then, shortly after, my Flame Green Fireline just got tight. I set on instinct and immediately thought - catfish - all the way to the net. She was big - all 9 lbs 9oz of her. BUT, no whiskers - she was a bass - WOW! My biggest in 2 years. We put her in the livewell in case of a double photo. Five minutes later, the second subject of the photo picked up my bait and she added 6 lbs 10 oz to the photo. I was pretty stoked about 2 bass for over 16 lbs. Reminded me of the old days at Clear Lake. That was it - and we bounced our way back to Red Bud about 11 pm. One loves his Ranger 521 the most during those rides!!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: All of our bass were around the 20 foot depth - nothing shallow. These big fish can take a bait so soft - rod sensitivity is everything in the winter!! As last trip, we were fishing off-shore broke rock fields as best we could in the wind. One needs to keep their line tighter that normal this time of year. Dead-stick is the structure will allow it. Water needs to get around 53-56 degrees to be the bass a little most active.

Report: Mike Sperbeck and I visited the lake after about a 5 week break. We started out of Red Bud about 4 pm. Beautiful afternoon - almost warm! Hope the bass felt that way too!!! One did! I was fishing a green pumpkin Berkely Havoc bait on my new Loomis NRX 852S (6-12 lb) with 8 lb test. After just a few casts, I thought I felt something strange - not a hint of a bite. She came into the boat about 3 minutes later - all 6 lb 5 oz of her. Clear Lake just being Clear Lake when you least expect it!! Mike caught a few smaller ones and lost a big one. After dark it was slow - we fished several areas in Konocti Bay with hardly a bite. The cloud cover was in the distance but never reach the lake - it was cold! Finally, Mike started throwing a small swimbait and found the key. He had several hits and landed a 6-9 and 6-10 back to back. We caught a few others in the 4 to 5 lb range. We thought we were going to join the early season 30 lb club, but ONLY managed a limit of 29 1/4 lbs. Nearly all of our fish were on off-shore rocky bottoms after dark. Before dark they were more shallow - my 6-5 maybe about 12-14 feet deep. Bass were biting after dark, but, no surprise, just a little pressure before dark. They were all in excellent shape.
    City: Yuba City

Tips: We were able to spot a lot of fish our my HDS-8, but few would bite. I think the cloud cover would have kept the air temp warmer and enhanced the bite, but no such luck. We both just did the VERY slow drag - stop technic - even with a swimbait. Rock bottom produced better than a smooth bottom. Look for rock patches in about 25-40 feet - off the bank!

    Water Temp: 54-56

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Mike Sperbeck and I hit the lake yesterday - out of Red Bud - from 5 pm 'til midnight. It was a quite frustrating trip because it was the second day of the weather change (cold air mass) which definitely affected the bite. Air temp was 36 degrees when we left. I started out with a near 5 lber, lost another big one, and Mike had a big one on a swimbait - which he lost. That was how the evening was to go for us. We only landed 6, but missed or lost about 15!! They would just nip the bait - sometimes very aggressively. We would set - and nothing there! And I lost my monster of the late fall - maybe between 8 and 10 lbs. Again - jumped - and spit the hook. The good bites did keep us fairly warm - our first cold night with fog forming on the lake as we left. All of our fish were 3 to 15-20 feet deep - up some with the warm rain. We used jigs and Berkely Havoc baits most of the time. We just stayed in the Clear Lake arm.
    City: Yuba City

Tips: We are supposed to have a major weather change by Wed. An northern storm is predicted with some very cold weather to follow. As the lake stabilizes and cools, the bass probably will move deeper and we will need to fish more slowly. Last night we saw something that most of you haven't seen. As we returned to Red Bud, the lake was dead calm with a winter silver-like sheen on it as fog would rise off the water. I have seen this many times before - it is like looking at a huge pane of glass made of silver. It reflects off lights on the shore. Absolutely gorgeous - but cold!!

    Water Temp: 56-57

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Thanks Kam - I love the Z521 - and so do my clients!! I had a client postpone a trip last night, so I took myself to the lake since a warm front was moving in. Well, it was late and I had too much moonlight - until the last hour (midnight) when the fish turned on a bit. The bite was slower than I expected. I missed 3 good fish that gave my Berkley Havoc baits tremendous bites, but I couldn't hook 'em. Wind was a factor. This has been the year of the "5's" for me as I landed another 5-13 and a 5-3, along with a 4 1/4 and a few a bit smaller. About 18+ lb limit, not up to November standards. Got off the water before a drop of rain hit me!! 1.75 inches fell today with a predicted 5 inches over the weekend. And this is only November??
    City: Yuba City

Tips: I could not find any concentrations of bass last night - just one here and there. Finally hooked a big one on Wheeler, but this Mrs.was one of the "misses." From Red Bud I only went up as far as the old Konocti Resort. Hard to believe - been closed 3 yrs now! All my hits were from 10 to 20 feet - not much shallow activity because of the bright moon - straight overhead during winter. If the rocks let me, I was working my baits VERY slowly as if the water was in the 40's. My first bass was caught on a jig w/#180 double-tail Yamamoto grub. First jig fish of the winter period.

    Water Temp: 57

Report: Got a chance to fish after work today from 3 till 6:30 pm. Headed straight to konocti bay for a group of shallow fish i found over the weekend crankin. Stuck a 3 followed by a 5+ on the square-bill. The southeast wind died off and so did the bite so i headed back to jones bay and started draggin the lv in deep water and got a couple 12 inchers.finished the evening off at no name reef, where i proceded to have my ass handed to myself by dumping 5 nice ones in a row. The first one was a pig at the boat! Ouch! Ended up finally landing 3 barley keepers just after dark and called it quits. The carp were rollin big time and the bass were still biting when i left....should of stayed out!!!
    City: lower lake

Tips: Crank the shallow rock.cover water...if you get snagged...do your best not to leave a mess for the guy behind you. Ive lost several fish in yards and yards of other guys lines. Its not that hard to break it off at the bait instead of cutting it off at your rod tip. Hey Larry... sweet boat buddy!
