Report: a few breaks in the clouds suckered me into going and I knew I would feeze solid. In at Packers at 0700, the lake has come up some 16ft since the 24th and now stands at 87.5 ft down, air temp was 37 with a slight push out of the south, was going to run up the McCloud but stopped on some stuff outside Packers to toss a new worm rig after re-rigging everything because of some Xmas presents. I put on an MGM eel in #66 and tossed it in at the bank and get bit on the second cast with about a 1.6 that grabbed it on the way down, re-rig and go in again with the same worm and missed one in about 10ft that bit the worm in half. Bait up again and thorw a little further down the bank and the bait just stopped after going in so i reel up slowly and feel some weight and stick what turns out to be a good one. it's heavy and rips line off my reel for about 30 ft and pumps the rod hard. I get it up and in and it goes 5.24 lbs and I ain't got anymore of these eels. DANG! bolt things down and put this fish in the box to see how it is and plan to fizz it later if need be, run for the upper sac and get on a pile of rocks up in the gooseneck that just went under and was about 12 down, got six off of it and 3 over 2lbs on the MGM Hoo-dun-it in three different colors, the #22,66,109. Went baack south a bit near Sac Point and stuck another good one at 2.65 on the #35. everything I am towing is working and I am wondering why I can't do this when the money is on the table. Head back in around 1130 and stop and get the smallest of the 2's on a point inside packers and end up with 14.54 and 11 fish total. Got snowed on a bit up in the gooseneck and my hands feel like they are incased in ice. Got a phot of the smallest and the biggest and on home. Great day for me, maybe someday I can actually get a check doing this. (probably not)
    City: Redding

Tips: The only hdi that didn't produce today was the smoke blue but then again I only fished it for about 10 minutes. The big fish today was my first over 5lbs on a worm but then again I don't throw worms much.

Report: present ramp and road conditions: I-5 has re-opened at Fawndale, carry chains, Jones Valley road work slowed by heavy weather and it is not likely to be opened by Jan 1st as predicted, contact the Hidden Valley Market for up to the minute info after New Years day(530-275-1102)When it is opened watch out for slick spots where there is no pavement, that work won't be completed for some time, the Redding Bassers turkey shoot scheduled out of Jones Valley for 1-8-05 may be changed to a different location. You are welcome to use the Silverthorn ramp now and I have heard that they are not charging a ramp/parking fee(530)275-1571 or 800-332-3044.
the lake is 91.86 ft down, a bit murky and you can expect some debris especially over in the lower and mid Pit Arm. Centmudi, Packers and Sugarloaf are all 2 lanes With floats in place, The best access with the shortest walk up and down is Sugarloaf at the north end of the Sac arm, All other Shasta Rec ramps are high and dry. With I-5 closures only Centimudi is open unless you want to chain up your rig and boat trailer.(depending on conditions, The CHP will sometimes let you through to Bridge Bay but don't count on it) 7 inches of rain so far at my house(600 ft )elevation and at least double that on the lake with another major blast scheduled late Wednesday through Thursday.

Report: What a nice early Xmas present! got in at Packers at 0654, air temp 46, lake at 93.4 ft down, 12 knot wind out of the north, 5 in ahead of me, ran up the McCloud for a change to fish some stuff that just went under the past week, armed myself with the hoo dun it in #22, haven';t used it much so i figured I would give it a whirl. Went up past keluche creek, found some fish fairly shallow, third cast got me a fat 3.61. What a way to start the day. Had 10 more and only one dink, between 1.83 and the 3.61 with my best five going 12.29 and all on the #22(brown with gold flake) Didn't miss a single bite so it was a great day for me. For once remembered my camera and got a photo of the biggest one. got out at noon, 17 rigs on the beach and air temp 59 degrees with the wind swinging in around from the south. Got a presure drop starting this am and some foul stuff heading our way by Sunday, we can sure use the rain. Only saw one other boat go past me, most everybody else went south and up the Sac. My first was only 12 ft deep, the deepest was at 41 ft with the average near 29ft. The bright sun seemed best for this bait so I stuck to the sunny side of the McCloud arm. Have a good Christmas!!

    Water Temp: 53.4-53.8

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: at packers at 0658, one guy in ahead of me, wind out of the north 12-15 with gusts to 30, airtemp 50 lake is at 93.5 ft down. decided to do a bit different today, no #109 tossed today but went with a new color in the HDI, #66 called violet melon and #35 which is red with black flake, also picked up a castaic 6in swimbait(trout) from Phils about a month ago and haven';t thrown it much. Motored over just south of Bridge Bay and tossed it at some windblown banks and point and backlashed it on the 3rd cast, it was like trying to throw a pancake into the wind. I am sitting there being blown down the bank and picking this mess out, get it done and make 2 turns on the reel and it gets attacked by what turned out to be a 2.56 spot that narly inhaled the bait in about 12 ft of water off a red mud point. throw it some more with no takers and head down by the dam and start throwing the #66 on a one ounce football head because of the wind. Get a couple down there(1.75 & 1.81) and go back towards packers to get out of the 4 ft waves, stop south of Packers and fishsome cuts for 5 more on the #66 and then used the #35 for 3 more and the best of the ho-dun-it fish at 2.21. These were fairly deep with one at nearly 60ft. The bite was better today than last sunday when they were just loading up. Out at 1215, air temp at 59 and the wind was still cookin at nearly 20mph. Maybe 36 rigs in the lot and down below.

Report: Launched at Bridge Bay at 0630 to try and brake in my new motor that Evinrude was nice enough to give me. I made my way to the I-5 bridge pillars, tried ripping and throwing a blade on three pillars until it was light enough to head up the McCloud arm, no takers on the pillars, the fish must have been still sleeping, 0730 first stop Shallow point throwing a rip bait as I moved down the east bank, switched to a spinnerbait and hit a 2.6 spot on the side of a long point, threw the blade until 0900 no more bites, switch to 3/4 oz. football head with brown hula grub working mostly the points on the outside managed 3 more spots about 1.5 each.wind came up from the north around 1130 so I started ripping again caught a nice 2.7 spot on the first point on the south side of Greens Creek, on to the next point and a 3.0 spot, ripped until about 1400 lost one good fish. I fished until 1600 caught 4 more small fish on a crankbait. a good day overall with beautiful weather. However I did not do much to brake-in my motor, too busy fishing

Report: In at Packers at 0705, lake down to 95.15 ft, air temp 52 and no wind. Went over and stayed in the lower Pit for 12 total and the best 5 went 8.58 so I am back to my standard ways. no spook or rip bite, one on a blade and the rest on the MGM #109 hoo-dun-it, best went 1.96, dumped a couple of small fish but no misses on the better fish. The blade fish was a fluke, made a long cast to a submerged rock pile just as nature called, while answering the call this 1.6 spot smacked the blade and I managed to get him hooked up and in and managed to NOT soil myself. Left me laughing all by myself. A bit of wind came up out of the south at 1030 as the skies cleared and things warmed up to 63 when I got out at 1215. 2nd rig in this am and only 8 total when I left. Lots of flotation foam floating around in the pit amongst all the fire debris that has been washed in especially around the mouth of Squaw Creek.

    Water Temp: 54.6-55.4

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: I need more days like this! 17.37 for my best 5 with 11 total and nothing under 1.8, damn what a morning.
In at Packers at 0710, heavy fog in Redding but clear after mountain gate. air temp going in was 44, lake up a bit over 5 ft and now at 97ft down with a lot of small debris and a few chunks of wood and mostly in the lower Pit. Lots of guys getting in this am, I got a spot down below and I was #3.

Pulled out to the island out front and started throwing a spook as I moved down the bank, got one bump and gave it up after 15 minutes. Drag out my 3/4 oz stuff with a MGM hoo-dun-it in #109 and get out to the point of the island and standing in 70ft throwing back at the point. The first cast sails in at about 10ft and it just stopped, rell up bit and feel some weight so I swing on it and off we go. This is a good fish. It heads down that steep bank and pumps the rod hard and I get it up and have a look and got nervous, get the net underneath it and in come a very nice spot. Weigh it after my hands quit shaking and it is 5.56lbs. It was acting kinda slow so I put in in the box to see how it would do. Moved off hitting a few other points on the way out towards the channel and see a friend over the front of his boat doing something with his trolling motor. Its Bill Quinn Sr, and his motorguide won't go. he fiddles with it a bit and asks my how I am doing and I said I just got one and go digging in the box to brag a bit. He's got a couple of guys with him and their eyes light up when i get that fish out which has now come to life. drop her back in with my chest all stuck out. Bill isn't all that impressed because he has a habit of catching fish like that very frequently. He is a blade and spooning wonder. They go off back to the ramp and I get over some fish in 35-40 ft and drop that hoo-dun-it down and move about 10 ft and stick another decent fish tht weighed 3.16 and I am greally feeling good now. I had to fizz that one and go back in again in the same area and stick another good one that weighed 3.41. I feel like I have died and gone to heaven. Fished for about 15 minutes and stick another decent fish that fought like crazy and it weighed 2.40. Took off over into the middle pit and no bites for an hour and then fished some cuts heavily eroded by the last storm and get one more good one at 2.86. i am nearly beside myself as i don't get to do this very often. Fished to 1115 and had 3 more and nothing smaller than 1.80 and that was a smallmouth. Head back in and out at 1130, air temp 61 and no wind at all. Both lanes at Packers are completely usable now.
    City: Redding

Tips: once again the color #109 did the trick. The bass fed guys ought to produce some great weights this weekend. I just wish i could do this more often.

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Have been out about 5 times in the past week or so preparing for the Cottonwood Bass Team's annual $100 per lb tournament. Probably should have stayed in bed today. Been fishing the upper Sac a lot and managing a few 2 lb fish per trip. Bryce and I took off this am full of hope and ran north near salt creek where he started catching fish on a yet to be named(by him) MGM worm. It s a watermelon green/violet looking creation. I couldn't get bit on my Hoo-dun-its till about 0930 and then stuck 6 in a row when the sun came out down near Kobe Point. Nothing to get excited about. We had a limit and then ran around trying to improve on it and went through nearly 30 fish but managed only a 1.83 for our big one. Bryce loaded the boat as he usually does, I managed only about 8 and they were just not big enough from 1.45-1.83. We wore out the cul em rite culling but couldn't get over the 10 lb hump, hell we couldn't get over the 8 lb hump. We ran up the pit for a bit and down near the confluence of the McCloud and Pit to no avail. At the weigh in Russ Meyer was in the lead with 16 lbs, but there were a lot of folks in the same boat as Bryce and I. We caught fish from the bank out to 40ft and I only threw a 1/2oz with the MGM hoo-dun-it in color #109. Caught lots of short and light weight fish. We found fish in the areas I was pre-fishing and some decent fish to boot but couldn't get them to go. Air temp going in was a brisk 34 degrees, 47 coming out and the lake is down to 102.8 ft. Visibility is down to nearly 12 ft in many areas. Very little wind today, heavy overcast and COLD.

    Water Temp: 56-58

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Fished from the 25th through the 28th. No activity on topwater or shallow reaction baits at all. All success came in 40-55 ft deep. Salt Creek was the hot spot. Find the shad and find the bass. Drop sotting works but spooning brought in better quality and faster action.
    City: San Ramon

Tips: For drop shot any and all plastic baits seemed to work equally well. Spooning with a 3/4 oz. white/Char. spoon was the hot ticket. The better bass where right on the bottom but others suspended up to 20 ft over 50 feet of water at times. Watch your meter. If baitfish are there and your are over a nice drop off or good structure fish that spoon just off the bottom with short 1-2 ft lifts. Hang on!

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: took the ride north and put in at Sugarloaf at 0740, no one there, 32 degrees at the ramp with a bit of wind out of the north, I am getting to old for this! Moved over to the rock walls adjacent and started south throwing some top water stuff(lucky craft, spook etc) and not getting bit. No shad activity at all, moved further south near Salt Creek inlet and get on some fish and get three in the boat but they are small from 1.54 to 1.63 on the MGM hoo-dun-it. Break out the same bait in a new color and try it for a bit and get a few better fish, a 1.78 and a 2.01. These fish were deep, first at 47 ft and the second a bit under 54ft. Tried some more top water along rock walls south of salt creek and nothing going. The mist is blowing out of salt creek and my swimming pool thermometer says 28. I am freezing to death so I go south to get some sun down near Little sugarloaf and pick up one more fish on the new color(a darker watermelon green with large red flake, don't know the number)it went a bit over 1.5. Continue south near Deadmans Gulch and get one more off a point in about 6ft on a darter headed #23 twintail, a dink that might have weighed a pound. Fished for 3 more hours without anymore bites and ran back to the ramp and out at 1230. Most came off of steep rock walls except for the two biggest which cam off the deep end of a long red mud point with softball sized rock on it. 68 degrees getting out and the lake is 102.4 ft down. Sugarloaf ramp in good shape after some mud was removed. 2lanes and a 1000 acres of parking.
    City: Redding

Tips: The color # 109 is still my go to color in HDI's and twintails, the new color has promise but I only had a few and only one left after busting off a bunch in those rocks up north.
