Clear Lake

Water Temp: 59-63
Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: Spent 4 days at Clear Lake this week with some real nice people, showing them how to ish spring conditions. They all had some success, and that's what I like. We caught anywhere rom 4 to 10 ish each trip, with the Tues night trip being the slowest. The day bite was better last week or some reason. I did go mysel Thurs night or 2 hours and stuck 4 to 6 1/2 lbs, so maybe nights are picking up. I was very pleased to help two guys who towed their boat all the way rom Utah to ish Clear Lake or the irst time, and one o them got a 7 lb 7 oz bass within their irst hour on the lake. That was cool! I tried a jig to see i the ish would respond to them and was able to get the 3 lb male to eat it, and suggested they try a jig or the emale. It worked! We put them back, o course, ater photos. They are good ishermen and probably did very well the rest o their trip. Another trip was with a husband and wie, and naturally, the wie got the big ish - a nice 5 pounders using a #208 Senko on a rock wass near the bar in South Konocti Bay. This ish was strong - took o under the boat and jumped 10 oot on the other side. She did a beautiul job o landing it. We caught nine, and could have caught many more, but they wanted to see more o the lake. One o my regular clients was out with me yesterday, and hooked a wild 6 to 7 pound ish, but he lost her in the second jump. Darn!! I ound the brown/orange Rodstrainer jig with a shortened 5" #180 double tail Yamamoto grub generated violent strikes rom the males, and some emales that wouldn/t touch anything else. Another client ron down south almost was a hero when he stuck a 6+ on a jig, but she wouldn't stay on. She wouldn't touch anything else. You might want to try a jig. Yesterday evening, about 5:30, I pitched this bait (in shadows) to a crusing emale just or un, knowing she would ignore it. I saw her come toward it never eeling a thing, but my line moved a bit, and set the hook on a 5 pounder. She wouldn't look at anything earlier in the day. I still can't believe she picked up that jig!!
City: Yuba CityTips: This time o year, i you are ishing or bed ish, or ish that are ready to go on beds, you probably will not eel a bite, since they arn't eeding. Watch the ish i you can, and anticipate when they have the bait in their mouth, then set. Watch their body language - that will help you know when to set. Bright colors help - chartreuse, white, and pearl are always good colors. You can see them disappear as a bass picks up the bait. 6" lizard, grubs, and tubes all work well. I you use the jig I mentioned, you have to watch closly, since it is harder to see. Don't orget your Polariod glasses or better underwater viewing. Please return all ish caught to their nest. Don't carry them around in your livewell. It is sad that so many bass will be removed rom their nests in all these tournaments - the ish are most exposed this year because o the lower water level.

City: San JoseTips: Watermelon Senko produces as usual.

Report: My mama is so accustomed to my drama she doesn't pay attention anymore- same situation with my reports. 30 to 40 in two trips over the weekend dispite the multi use problem ater 10am or so. Took my dad and my son on one trip and it was just like Mayberry. Except I can't wistle and my boy's little kacki shorts. We didn't use ly rods either, although it was my dad's irst experience with a spinning outit and I don't know what looked worse- him or my irst experience casting ly rod a couple years ago with my buddy. More on that in a minute. Put my dad on some spinners and he landed a ew small spots. Not bad considering he's the isherman that irst introduced trot line ishing to Caliornia. When I was my son's age a catish on the end o a string pulled me into the Sacramento River and I've been hooked on this sport ever since. It would have been much simpler to tie on a darter head and go dragging like i did, but watching him lail was more entertaining. My buddy did me on the second trip. I listen to his suggestions and he always takes me out o my game. It's a great strategy. Dock talk? I guess that's boat talk. He ripped a couple early then he switched to grubs. Ater he ran up the score I inally copitulated and tied a on a grub. I then went on a dink tear and put up the numbers. There were some keeper spots and a smallie or two. He wants to take me ly ishing again- sadistic bastard.
City: El Dorado HillsTips: Spots are spawning as well as largemouths. Lake is illing ast- Hobbie ramp at Brown's is already underwater. Unless you're bed ishing, work the water column. As the boat traic increases during the day most ish go deeper.

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: My Dad and I decided to head out to Clear Lake sense I hadn't caught any ish the last two time up there and my Dad's biggest bass is only 2 1/2 pounds(He doesn't ish much). We got to the lake about 6am Thursday, we launched out o Redbuds. We stayed there in the south end, we caught several ish that morning. Several 3's, a couple 4's and I caught a 6, my Dad did catch his biggest up to this point(a 3 pounder). We decided to go check into our room and take a break, this was about 10:30. We got back out on the water about 12:30, nothing or about an hour when I got another 6 pounder. Then things picked up again, I caught a 5, 4 1/2 and my Dad caught a 5 1/2. We stopped ishing about 3:30, our best ive were 27 pounds. The wind really came up so we decided not to go out that evening, we did head back out about 6:00 Friday morning. We started out right away with my Dad getting a 3 and mysel a 2 1/2, then the wind really picked up and I was not able to hold us in close to the bank. Up until this point we had been caughting our ish on senkos, I decided to tie on a crank bait and work a rock wall. In about ive casts I had a 4, 5 and a 6 1/2. Then the wind blew us o the lake, can't wait to do this again.
City: SalidaTips: Senkos, right up on the bank
