Report: The Redwood Empire Bass Club held its annual Open team tournament today. There were 27 teams which was a record turnout. The winners were 1st: Joe Leonard & Patrick McGee with 15.94 lbs.& big fish of 4.55lbs. 2nd: Derek Castro & Brian Hoxsie with 13.51lbs. 3rd: Mike McPherson fishing alone with 13.04lbs. 4th: Dave Church & John Kidder with 12.59lbs. 5th: Brent Schneider fishing alone with 12.29lbs. and second big fish of 4.17lbs. My partner Dave Nieto and I finished sixth, one place out of the money with 12.19lbs.
The weights wern't as heavy as I had predicted in my previous report but everyone caught fish and there were 20 limits weighed in. The winning team used heavy jigs fished at 30 to 40 ft. A variety of crankbaits, drop shot worms and blades caught the majority of the fish. A special thanks to Marine Unlimited for co-hosting the event with us and providing raffle gifts.
      City: Santa Rosa

Report: Well, now that it's late into the night/morning and all the NCC angler's are or should be sleeeping I will post my report from Thursday the 14 th.Okay, On the water before sun-up, 1st stop I started off throwing a spook around an island in the main body, result's nada. I then switched over to a lucky craft staceeeee 90 rip-bait in ghost minnow, I ripped over shallow flat's & deep one's aswell for NADA.Next up was the swim-bait, for nada.I then broke down and went for the drop-shot rod, result's> (BORING BUT PRODUCTIVE, IF YOU LIKE CATCHING SALMON). I caught four Salmon drop shotting using a 3" Berkley Power Minnow , color was Black Shad,AWESOME bait for bass aswell just not on this stop.I left the main body & headed for the South Fork. The first point I pulled up too, I started off throwing a Bommer-A crank bait & on my 2nd. or 3rd. cast I nailed a 10.8 lb. LMB, IN SIX FEET OF WATER!!! WHO NEED'
S SWIM-BAIT'S <J/K... IF YOU WANT TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF A DD FISH THEN GO WITH A SWIM-BAIT, I JUST GOT LUCKY!!I chucked that bommer for a good two hour's after nailing that PIG, The only other fish I caught on the Bommer was a 2 - 2.5 lb.Spot like I said "I JUST GOT LUCKY".So, I went back to Drop-Shotting using the Berkely P/M in 15-20' of water & caught three more Spot's before calling it a day. OH YAH, Kent Brown AKA K.B. I gotta give him a little credit for helping me stick that PIG, WHY ?? Well, the Bommer-A I caught that PIG on, was given to my son & I along with a bunch of other misc. tackle that my old friend Mr. B... no longer had garage space for, THANK'S BUD!!! & NO, YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BACK!!! ~MJB
      City: Granite Bay

Tips: Keep your line wet & good thing's will happen. Folsom has been very , very hard to pattern this Fall & Winter & without a good pattern it's tough to putt'em in the boat. Folsom will turn on & when it does I hope my line is in the water.... If a friend offer's tackle, take-it & use it, IT WORKED FOR ME!!!

Report: Fished a half day with Dan today. Fished Coney island area and Victoria up to Hwy 4. Rain was coming down sideways in winds 15 mph +. (lying weatherman!). Dan still put us on fish almost immediately. 2-4 ft, suspending stickbaits/jerkbaits in shad patterns and med size willow leaf spinnerbaits did the trick. Seemed like the fish were balled up over/next to deeper grass, out of the main current following the shad as usual. Anywhere we could find a little cut in the weeds or similar ambush point, we found bass. Good size very chunky bass, lots of fun. Dan is very good at pointing out and explaining the subtleties of the river, i.e.- the 'Drive up Window' phenom. Attention to detail really made the day. Thx Dan!

Report: Never mind those bluegill, If you want to catch big stripers use a 12 inch largemouth. Use a 3/0 Tiemco SP600 or = and hook it just in front of the dorsal fin. I caught a 30 pounder the other day.

Report: I found the CA DFG fishing regs at http://www.fgc.ca.gov/2006/06freshfishregbook.pdf. In Section 4.20 (d) it seems to say using bluegill in the Delta is okay. Most other places, no, so be careful. You almost have to be a lawyer to read the regs these days.

Report: 2/3 of the lake has less visability now. I was hoping to get out in the rain on Saturday but no dice. I did get out Sunday which started out fairly clear but at 12:00 it started to rain. The best thing about Cachuma in my opinion is the Smallmouth/Largemouth mix. I started the day slow on swimbaits on my first hour so I checked the outside edges with a spoon and the fish Gods were happy to oblige me so, realizing I would be able to throw heavy metal all day I went off looking for a swimbait bite. I did get one fish on the Huddleston but not really worth the effort as it was only 3 pounds. I started spooning and did okay but nothing fantastic. I got another huge 15+ pound catfish and had my hands full getting my spoon back. around 11:00 my spoon bite just died. I thought it was because I was getting into murkier water but later I realised that the fish were responding to the weather and were moving shallow. I did best in 50+ feet in the morning but would occasionally get a better fish in 35 feet. I was not seeing as much bait as I would have liked to have seen on the meter but the bait I did see was tight to the bottom. From 11:00 to 12:00 I think I might have caught one fish so I pulled the boat onto the best looking smallmouth water I could find. It had smallmouth written all over it but it was to shallow 25-30 feet. I played on this spot untill I found some nasty stuff that you just could not spoon with my usual method of ripping the bait so I modified my presentation to meet the need and WHAM! 3+ pound smallmouth. Long story short with my new modified presentation and shallow tactic I went back over all the areas I had previously fished during the day and fished the new suicide method. Shallow and in the brush. I didn't loose any spoons this day but I did get 8 smallmouth over 3 pounds : ) ...I was stoked as one was close to four pounds and another weighed 4 pounds 4 ozs. in a weigh in bag on my scale so pretty close to four pounds. Interesting note: one of my fish coughed up a freshwater sculpin? or goby? type fish earlier in the morning which was alive so I put it in my livewell were it made a full recovery so I put it back in. The crappie are still very deep on brush and the rainbows went off in the rain. 1 1/2 colors or right on top with red/pearl needle fish being the better color. The trout guys told me to play with your speed as the fish seemed to want the baits trolled a bit faster.
      City: Santa Barbara

Tips: Pay attention to what the fish are trying to tell you. When the bite went south at noon I just changed the local of my presentation by going shallow and finding a way to do it without getting hung up all the time and the fish responded.

      Water Temp: 58-60

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Been waiting for some rain as the lake is very clear. Typical DVL winter bite as a few swimbait fish in the first hour, 6.75 and 6.05. Then a long period of no fish as the sun hit the water. About 12:00 as the water warms go to the long points and c-rig a lizard in 35-60 and scratch the rest of the day. 6 fish total, biggest 5-23 lbs. Water is also dropping fast. Shad very deep, 75' plus.

      Tips: Stay on the outside.
