Report: I found the CA DFG fishing regs at http://www.fgc.ca.gov/2006/06freshfishregbook.pdf. In Section 4.20 (d) it seems to say using bluegill in the Delta is okay. Most other places, no, so be careful. You almost have to be a lawyer to read the regs these days.

Report: 2/3 of the lake has less visability now. I was hoping to get out in the rain on Saturday but no dice. I did get out Sunday which started out fairly clear but at 12:00 it started to rain. The best thing about Cachuma in my opinion is the Smallmouth/Largemouth mix. I started the day slow on swimbaits on my first hour so I checked the outside edges with a spoon and the fish Gods were happy to oblige me so, realizing I would be able to throw heavy metal all day I went off looking for a swimbait bite. I did get one fish on the Huddleston but not really worth the effort as it was only 3 pounds. I started spooning and did okay but nothing fantastic. I got another huge 15+ pound catfish and had my hands full getting my spoon back. around 11:00 my spoon bite just died. I thought it was because I was getting into murkier water but later I realised that the fish were responding to the weather and were moving shallow. I did best in 50+ feet in the morning but would occasionally get a better fish in 35 feet. I was not seeing as much bait as I would have liked to have seen on the meter but the bait I did see was tight to the bottom. From 11:00 to 12:00 I think I might have caught one fish so I pulled the boat onto the best looking smallmouth water I could find. It had smallmouth written all over it but it was to shallow 25-30 feet. I played on this spot untill I found some nasty stuff that you just could not spoon with my usual method of ripping the bait so I modified my presentation to meet the need and WHAM! 3+ pound smallmouth. Long story short with my new modified presentation and shallow tactic I went back over all the areas I had previously fished during the day and fished the new suicide method. Shallow and in the brush. I didn't loose any spoons this day but I did get 8 smallmouth over 3 pounds : ) ...I was stoked as one was close to four pounds and another weighed 4 pounds 4 ozs. in a weigh in bag on my scale so pretty close to four pounds. Interesting note: one of my fish coughed up a freshwater sculpin? or goby? type fish earlier in the morning which was alive so I put it in my livewell were it made a full recovery so I put it back in. The crappie are still very deep on brush and the rainbows went off in the rain. 1 1/2 colors or right on top with red/pearl needle fish being the better color. The trout guys told me to play with your speed as the fish seemed to want the baits trolled a bit faster.
      City: Santa Barbara

Tips: Pay attention to what the fish are trying to tell you. When the bite went south at noon I just changed the local of my presentation by going shallow and finding a way to do it without getting hung up all the time and the fish responded.

Report: Been waiting for some rain as the lake is very clear. Typical DVL winter bite as a few swimbait fish in the first hour, 6.75 and 6.05. Then a long period of no fish as the sun hit the water. About 12:00 as the water warms go to the long points and c-rig a lizard in 35-60 and scratch the rest of the day. 6 fish total, biggest 5-23 lbs. Water is also dropping fast. Shad very deep, 75' plus.

Report: The Devil Mountain Bassmasters hit the Delta for their last tournament of the year on a cold morning in December. Traditionally a tough bite and this year was no exception. But as the day warmed, the bite on senkos, beavers and jigs pick up. Big fish for the day was over 7 lbs, then followed by a 5 pounder.

If you are looking for a great club that is focused on fishing and a good time, check out www.dmbass.com. We will have the 2007 tournament schedule posted soon. We are looking to add boaters and non-boaters this year.

Report: Most of the ducks and geese are on the farm islands feeding. Went hunting this morning in my kayak but didnt fire one shot but saw thousands of ducks and geese moving between islands. If you were at sherman or almost anywhere in the delta then you should of saw ducks and geese or you should have at least heard them from a few miles away. Back to fishin, caught 3 stripers and a couple black bass. Nothing big, just small keepers.

Tips: Bouncin bluegill on the bottom for stripers. Brushhogs and zara spooks for black bass.

      Report: LAUNCHED 7:30 AM

I THREW SWIMBAITS THE WHOLE TIME ON THE WATER.I STARTED OUT WITH A BBZ-1-SLOW SINK, NOTHING.
SWITCHED OVER TO A HUDDLESTON DELUXE-ROF 12 AND STARTED KEYING ON ROCK BANKS WITH DEEPER WATER ON THEM.FISHING PARALELL WITH BANK.
4 1/2 POUNDER CAME OUT OF 14 FEET OF WATER.THIS FISH CRUSHED THE BAIT
MY FIRST GOOD QUALITY FISH ON THE HUDD. I'VE SPENT ALOT OF TIME ON THE WATER THROWING JUST SWIMBAITS AND MY BEST ADVICE WOULD BE TO LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE AT HOME.
      City: FRESNO

Tips: DON'T BE AFRAID TO BLANK, THROW IT TILL YOUR ARM FALLS OFF.

P.S.- BUY A LURE RETREIVER WITH THE CHAINS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE WEIGHT,I HUNG UP MY SWIMBAIT 2 TIMES AND GOT IT BACK BOTH TIMES.I SAVED SO MUCH $.

      Water Temp: 52-53

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: I made another short night trip to Clear Lake Wed evening with slow results again. The cloud cover was there for a few hours but out came the full moon and away went the bass. I fished a few areas around the south end and caught 7 or 8. While I couldn't break 4 lbs, most of them were 3 to 3 3/4 lbs, all caught on Power and brush hogs. At least I didn't loose a big one this trip 'cause I didn't hook one!! My best 5 were still close to 17 lbs. Slow night though! Fished about 4 1/2 hours.
      City: Yuba City

Tips: Four to five hours is all I need to figure if the night bite is a go! Most of the time I can instinctively tell after a few hours if it is going to happen. I was kinda fooled - conditions seemed good and some bass were biting while carp were rolling - until the clouds parted. I am pretty much convinced now - when the carp quit being active, the bass will "rest in peace"! And finally, the stupid night fisherman will go home to bed where he belongs!!!! Timing, timing - it will happen sometime!

Off the water at 11 a.m. Probably coulda had more, buy spent time taking pictures of structure on the shoreline and a bald eagle that swooped down and snatched up a 1.5 lb. spot!!! Again, not hard to find fish, caught fish on 4 of the 5 areas I stopped on. No big ones but still a bunch o' fun!!!
