Report: Sorry for being late with this report, got buzy. The Basin BassMasters out of Loomis hit the lake @ 6:30am. Light winds but the fishing was hard to get something over 15 ", but the club got a waver and only had to get 13" or biger. Thank God for that. My partner and I had our limit by 8am. At the end of the day and 80 fish later we weighted in 6.78 for our best five. The winning five fish were Joe Everett and Vence Lee with a big bag of 8.96. A fun but culled all day for less then 7.0 lbs.

I am glad to be back fishing at Berryessa. I had expected great success this past Saturday but it was not to be. I took Gary out for the day and was all gungho for a great day of fishing and we ended up with a day of wishing. Our day started at 6 AM and we were ready for that early morning bite but low and behold....no fish!!!!!!!! It was completely still, no birds, no tell tale signs of fish anywhere to be seen. We saw boats trolling for trout and salmon near Big Island but three boats that we spoke to had no luck yet either. We fished from the ranch house to the vineyards throwing everything from top water to worming the bottom to no avail. I told Gary lets go to Big Island and half way there I made a u-turn because I found the birds in 65 feet of water. Since I was not lucky with bass I thought we should try our luck with trout or salmon. I spotted fish at about 25 feet down so I had Gary throw out a rattletrap shad color and "pow" he hooked on to a 3# bass as he was bringing it in the bass kept jumping and about the fourth jump just inches from the boat......you guessed it he spit the hook out of his mouth!!!! Gary was not happy. This became the blueprint for our day. Next we went to shallow water and I fished with two rods. On one I had a live minnow going down about 3 feet in six feet of water, the other I had a weightless senco. As I was playing the worm, I saw this 4# bass engulf the minnow and take off my rod bent in half and the 4# testline snapped. We went back to the dock at around 5PM and as I helped Gary to his truck we saw a 3# bass swimming under the docks so I got a rod with a small hook only and put a minnow on it and showed Gary how to lob it so that the minnow will swim and hopefully the bass will go after it. Success......the bass took the minnow and started to swim, I told Gary do not try to lift the bass out I will go get the net and try not to let him jump, keep the tension on the line. When I got back with the net about 18 seconds later Gary felt bad that he had lost the fish again. Even though we didn't catch fish he and I had a great day trying. After Gary left I stayed down at the dock and using the same system caught some bass and catfish. Sunday I went out for a few hours by myself. I went towards Capell and fished the left side where it's rocky and has trees with no luck. I tried the drift again using a minnow and a plastic crawdad and the minnow won three times. This was a very hard week for fishing. When I came back to the dock I saw my friend Tony and he said he had no luck. Three more people I spoke to had the same results. I have noticed as I walked up and down the docks that the bass were hiding in the shadows of the dock. Each summer there is always approximately two weeks where the fishing is very slow. Well this was week one for me lets see what week two will be like. 'till next week.............................good fishing!!!!!!!!

Report: So what's the big deal if I post another boring, amazing, fantastic trip to Clear Lake. It is probably impossible to have a bad trip to the lake these days!! At least I can return to my former self and report on two night trips!! Friday night was supposed to be windy and cool but wound up warm and flat! I will have to say that right now I don't think the night fishing can top the day fishing - that will change in a month or two I suspect. But nearly 100 bites and 49 bass in the boat did seem to make my three client very happy! I guided a father and his two 20 something sons and fun we had!! We did well on worms for two hours before dark. Would have loved to throw cranks but that is not allowed in my boat with 4 people. After dark we went into Konocti Bay and nailed a 3 pounder on the first cast and got a few more. We moved our way up the west side toward Brados, fishing some well-known areas and some not-so-well know areas (subtle, secret rockpiles, har). About midnight - as the moon got higher - the bite really turned on. The three clients landed five bass from 4-1 to 4 1/2 lbs. One of the sons caught a 4-7 and a 4-8 back to back near Anderson Island. He was using a modified Chatterbait which was hot - when it worked! He was doing a lot of repair to it as big bass "tore" it up a few times! Dad was a little slow with the net the first time and he lost a 6 to 8 lb bass. He lost another big one too. He had a good rhythm fishing it - kind of a lift-drop motion. The bass loved it! At Sea-Breeze, the three bassmasters were casting to a wall and I just made another out-of-the-way cast with my black 10 inch Power Worm. It never hit the bottom (4 feet of water!) and I yelled "lines in"!! She felt huge but must have been a late spawner - but still 6 lbs 11 oz! This was probably one the the best bright moon "open water" bites I have experienced in a long time. Our five best weighed 24 lbs 3 oz - a good nights work!! The night before was the slight cold front with some wind - not bad. My client had to make an emergency trip to Southern Cal, so I guided myself and could not find any big bass and did not break 4 lbs! Amazing!! I did catch over 50, using spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs, worms, and Yamamoto Kreature baits. What a difference a night makes - thank goodness Friday night was client night!
      City: Yuba City

Tips: I know this is going to distress some of you, but my carp theory was shattered last night - and Thurs too. I remember former Clear Lake guide Keith Clow used to say something like "the only exception to a rule in bass fishing is that there are no rules" - or something like that!! The bite was wide open both nights and I heard 5 carp roll - 3 one night and 2 the other.
Carp usually like to come out and howl during the high moon period and that usually helps in dertermining how active the bass will be! Oh well - back to the drawing board. I found bass on the shore both nights - but only if deep water was VERY close by. Most bass were off-shore. The lake has dropped quite a bit in the last 3 or so weeks and this should encourage a movement to off-shore areas - rockpiles, ledges, and deep docks. Since bigger bass are feeding during the day - don't be afraid to use bigger baits. The 10" black Power worm is working great again this year - even at noon. The jig bite is wonderful - I am using brown/orange (what else is new!) but other colors will work - especially with a little purple in them. Black/grape and green pumpkin are the favorite color worms in my Ranger! Bob Higgins of Limit-Out tackle told me of a new color 6" finesse worm and one of my clients almost used up one of the two packs before dark. It is called "Salt River Craw". Trust me - it works!!

      Water Temp: no idea

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Went to this lake for the first time.

Had one on plastics and my friend had one on spinner bait. Both fish around 3-4 pounds.

Overall with this heat looks like there is no fish in this lake although there is gotta be some.

Hey, Eric, the only one fishing this lake:), I walked all the way from the marina to the far right side of the lake and did not see much structure at all.

It is deep somewhere and not too deep. But in general it is a flat not too steep surface steadily going down.
No particular place where I could think of fish staging.
      Any tips on the spots?
Where whould the fish be this hot time of year.
I threw some lures pretty far and pretty deep with no takes:(
      Planning to go there again.
      Any tips appreciated.
      City: Cupertino

Tips: No tips. First trip to the lake. Lots of people fishing for trout. Very beautiful place.
      Good luck to everyone

I tried the huddleston for no fish, switched to a soft tool. There were eating again. caught 2 fish at 6lbs, and then went to work with a mattlures real trout. caught another limit right around 18 this time.

Tips: Throw the big stuff, seriously.

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Fished yesterday for the first time since my last report. Sure was good to get out. The lake is at the level that I know best. Many years this is about as high as it gets and I've spent a lot of time fishing this level. I've located several rockpiles on the north end and several pieces of structure on the main lake that always hold fish at this level. They were there yesterday. I had a 15 lb limit of smallies on the gitzit by 6:20. Improved the limit with a 5 lb black about 9:00 and upped it to 19+ a few minutes later with my second 4 lb smallie. Off the water by 9:45. Pretty exceptional day for me for August. Sure glad I made it out.
      City: Weaverville

Tips: The gitzit was the hot ticket early. After the sun got on the water, the Pro Gold worm worked best. I guess they liked the flash that gold line puts out. After another week with my nose to the grindstone I should be on the lake a little more.

      Water Temp: 69 to 70

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Launched out of Veira's around 6 AM and went to a spot that was real hot last week for smallmouths. We got into them again on crankbaits. We got 28 with the biggest going just shy of 3#'s. About half the fish would not be keepers, but boy do they fight. We were off the water by 11:00 AM. Great Day!!
      City: Suisun

Tips: Fish down side of current breaks on rocky banks that have shade over-hangs by trees.

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Went fishing with my son Danny. Launched at Redbud and pretty much all over the lake. Danny caught the best fish of the day on his new Persuader E-chip spinnerbait, went about four pounds. Got good bites on the DD-22 white and chartreuse, roughly 10 or more fish, until it exploded on a rock. Also fished the Yamamoto kreature bait in watermelon red and got a lotta bites out of it also. Finished off the day cranking a white bomber back in Rodman and caught three fish to 3 pounds.
      City: Oakley

Tips: Keep your line in the water and fish your confidence baits and you'll do well. The btie is still strong at Clear Lake and the fish are hot.

      Water Temp: 80

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: Well my buddy and I went out on Saturday around 3pm until 8:30pm and had some really good fishing. My buddy caught an +8 lb (couldn't weigh it because the batteries were dead on the scale) and i caught a 4 lb and a 5 lb. Together we caught around 26 fish between 1 pound to 3 pounds, besides the bigger fish. The top water bite picked up at dusk and that is when we started catching the smaller fish. We fished the 5 mph zone earlier in the afternoon and caught the bigger fish there then went to the dam area. Didn't catch anything until we saw fish breaking the surface and the hunt was on. We used top water, Team Diawa's, jigs, Senko's and grubs. The bigger fish hit the jigs. Great day on the water!

Tips: Ready Mark's tips they work.

Report: Caught my first shast 20lb limit. Wow good fishing. I thought this was supposed to be a light line place, but nope. Threw huddlestons, and dd22's for 22.18 limit, no big fish just solid fish.

Tips: If you want to catch big, fish big.
