Report: Lived in Ventura as a kid and went to Matilija Reservoir north of Ojai once on a camping trip back in the early 60's. Anyone know if it holds any decent bass or if it even gets fished much? Or is fishing even allowed there anymore?

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Approaching cold front. Cool weather, 45 deg, at 7:30am. Lake is full, ramps all open. Water in good shape, not much debris and clarity is good. Easy to make out bottom in 6ft. Fished shallow, moving slowly along banks with worms on C rig or Drop Shot. 6 or 8 boats fishing Johnson and saw a few guys sitting on beds. Slow start, bite seemed to pick up after 10am.

Tips: April 22-23 is an Annual Trout Derby. There will be large crowds. Ramps will be congested with slow launch/retreive boaters. RV park fills up the Tue or Wed before the weekend.

Report: In response to the Supervisory meeting held on the 11th at the SM Government offices. Nothing of value other than 'getting pushed off' happened. Meeting was cancelled from mid-morning to 2PM, them by 3:05 the Adult Health issue was still going on. Not much was said other than a reschedule to Mar 25th, naturally, at a time when most are at work [makes the crowd smaller and less hassle] and they can get all the liberal guns to close the lake. It is really funny that COMB said that the launch ramp was still 'under construction' when in fact, fill base was in place right up to the ramp to accept boat lauch but COMB stated that the landscape wasn't finished, the fish clean station wasn't finished and the 'ramp' still wasn't ab;e to accept vehicles. ???WHAT??? Little is known to the public about the 15 ton crawler crane that was used to drop in the ballast for the ramp. The ONLY way it could get to that particular spot was to DRIVE DOWN the 'uncompleted' [ha ha] ramp. So I guess it isn't ready for a car and boat! Another ploy of COMB to keep boaters off this watershed and like the Mar 4th meeting COMB had, "CLOSE THE LAKE".

Lets us ALL unite and for a Coalition for Clean Lakes within the 6 lake region of Casitas, Cachuma, Lopez, Margartita, Naci and San Antone. Lets ALL show up at Cachuma IF the board elects to let the Trout Derby go on as planned but close it to all others. This is the big money maker for Cachuma and if all the Bassers show up in force, they cannot decline us enty into the water -- If so, stand your ground and call KCOY and KEYT and tell them to show up. Wanna make a bet we get on the water!

It is a know fact now that some chemical that is in the product Catch and Release that we use for live wells, has something in it that is proven beyond all other brands to kill the larva of the Quagga and possibly Zebra. Anybody else have any info on this? Pass it along.

BASSERS UNITE!!!! We want clean water too but lets have the COMB hear OUR suggestions as well!

    Report: Notice of Public Hearing

    March 2008

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will conduct a public hearing on March 11, 2008 at the Betteravia Government Center in Santa Maria to consider a request from the Cachuma Operations and Maintenance Board (COMB) to temporarily close Lake Cachuma to private boats. The request is based upon the threat of Quagga Mussel (an invasive aquatic freshwater mussel) possibly being introduced into the lake via private boats. The hearing will be conducted as part of the regularly scheduled meeting which begins at 9am.and should be heard sometime during the morning agenda.

Public may give testimony before the Board of Supervisors in person in Santa Maria, or by remote at the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room in Santa Barbara.

The Betteravia Government Center Hearing Room is located at 511 East Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria, Ca.

The Santa Barbara Hearing Room is located in the County Administration Building, fourth floor at 105 East Anapamu Street in Santa Barbara.

Tips: Everybody show up to this!

Report: Drove by today. Launch ramp closed. Now they are estimating March 22 for the opening date.

My guess is to await decision at Santa Barbara Supes meeting on the 11th and to await Casitas decisions and guidance.

    Water Temp: 59

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Tough bite for us. Nothing to report except conditions. Couldn't get any swimbait fish - had a few nicer fish a couple weeks ago. Not even a touch on the spider jig or 10" worm. Dropped a brand new spoon and broke it off on my first cast - thanks for the tip Kelly! One of those days. Didn't see any significant shad activity. Lake activity is transitioning into the winter pattern - lots of panfishers and trout danglers everywhere.

Tips: Fish slow? I probably fished too fast, as usual.

Report: Water beautiful and clear except behind island. Lots of suspended matter down there. Wife and I hit Johnson on the humps inside. A couple of small fish. Best fish was steep wall in Santa Cruz near bouys with Senkos. Chalk cliffs were slow with a couple of dinks on a jig worm. Only fished about 3 hrs. 2 keepers and several dinks.

    Water Temp: 62.2 - 65

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Tried my luck again this weekend, didn't get skunked but then again only a couple were keepers and barely at that. All caught at the very begining of the river where the boom is. All in 5-10 feet in the big rocks, tried spoons but caught mostly stick fish. Used purple/brown jigs to catch mine, threw ones with red in them in the clear water by the dam end, but no takers, threw the hudd ROF 5 for a spell but again no takers, tried the deep BBZ for about an hour but no followers or takers, got caught up on rocks and brush though, got the BBZ back with out problems. Will try a different spot next time to the previous two outings...maybe jackrabbit flats or the cistern area near the dam.

Tips: Throw what ever they are biting on.

    Water Temp: 63-67

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Fished with a nice guy ( Sam ) looking to further his understanding of the lake today. We had a tough bite and took it in stride. I believe we would have done much better if we had had the wind from a few days earlier but on this day it was very minimal. While that makes it easier to fish...it makes it harder to catch! We caught fish on spoons, jigs, and dropshot worms. The shad all seem to be from Santa Cruz to the river. We ( I ) wasted alot of our day looking for fish on the ledges off of the flats but there was nothing going on there or on the shear walls. Very different year than last. Did catch a crappie on a spoon and briefly had a big carp on the line ( again! ). We could see fish in 4 feet of water so we left them and came back an hour later where I caught one of the healthiest 4 1/2 pounders (weighed on a scale) I've seen in the lake this year. One bigger 2 1/2 pound smallmouth ....Things were downright tough. The largemouth was in 10 feet of water on a Peanut butter and jelly 1/2 0z. jig with a brown black and red flake trailer and the smallie came on a chrome 3/4 oz. spoon cast to a ledge and hopped back to the boat. The smallmouth was hacking up really large and red crawfish so I think oxblood light red flake is a good worm choice and a little orange or red on the jig might help too.
    City: Ojai

Tips: The lake is turning over to some degree and will be tough for a while if there is no wind. If the wind blows do not retreat but get out a blade (shad in nature) or a ROF5 Huddleston ( shallow running swimbait) and fish the wind blown banks. The fish that are eating seem to be the shallow ones. I think the deep fish are full ;)
